Amateur Mortician

I'm a 28 year old mortician-in-training (a funeral director + embalmer working on getting their licenses) (This blog is essentially my diary - doing this stuff WILL traumatize you, so you gotta find a healthy coping mechanism somehow. All names and likenesses have been changed to protect the deceased/their family.) Feel free to ask me death questions! I might not know the answer but I know people who do!

Today I drove for 4ish hours to another major city to pick up a decedant. When I got back to the funeral home I then went to pick up a veteran's flag from the post office. And from there I swung by the cleaners to drop off said flag and pick up two others I'd previously left there to get pressed. I then went home for a short break - ate lunch, got a shower, changed, then came back to the funeral home.
And now I'm currently working the desk at a 3 hour visitation that I'll be taking to their church tomorrow morning bright and early. (I already hear these next few days are going to be killer...)
It's been raining off and on for the last few hours though. Usually I try to disassociate to make time go by faster but it hasn't been that bad of a night. I hope the rest goes smoothly...
6pm Update - This family has a bunch of little kids that they're letting run around outside with one of the uncles. It looks like they're playing soccer in one of the patches of grass. Oop- one of the little kids tackled the other one so hard his shoee came off! (One of the best perks of this job is just the people watching.)
8pm Update - They aren't getting ready to leave.
8:45 Update - The family asked me to open the casket so they could measure their family member with red ribbon 9 times. Apparently it's an old Mexican funeral tradition but I've never heard of it? It was interesting at least. They left immediately after they finished, which was kinda weird but at least I finally get to go home.
When I dropped by the house for my break, my roommate was watching TV. He asked me if I wanted anything from Walmart but I refused. It was nice of him to offer but I'm still a bit grossed out about sitting in his sweat puddle. I'm starting to get the vibe that he finds me attractive or something. Oh well, I'm married (he doesn't seem to like my husband that much either).

Today I drove from my city to another and back (in 7+ hours) just to pick up a dead person. I hear that tomorrow is going to be another similar day. Despite the time it took, I really enjoyed the sense of independence and how scenic the route was.
If I had to say I learned one thing today from experience - it's that the cots steer/maneuver easier from the back section where the wheels are at. Always position the head end on the side of the extra wheels/where the handle bar is at. Not only does the weight make it easier to steer, but when you take them out of the vehicle, the heaviest part of the body is being held by said vehicle. It's much easier to lift the leg end than the head end because of the weight difference. One more thing...
MAKE SURE THE COT CLICKS
Cause you'll drop the person and the whole cot if the legs of the cot don't catch - I did it last week, thank God no one was on that cot. Seriously, be careful with those things, they're more finicky than they look for sure.
(Pictured below is a cot that would be used to pick up a decedant.)
Tumblr media
I came home, made dinner, then drew and read for a few hours till one of my roommates came home. The other one was passed out on the couch since before I got home. When he finally left, and I went to go sit on the couch, the cushions were damp with his sweat - and it smells sour. I needed a shower before, but I definitely need one now.
Tomorrow is a better day.
