Good thing #84: I painted pottery with a beloved friend today. When she was putting stuff away, I saw the sun shine through the window and it was soft and beautiful. I could hear her voice across the room behind some shelves, warm as always. She laughed nearby as I watched the light.
#good things#holding onto the good moments right now#I am trying to watch the light when it's here#even when it's small#especially when it's small

A Story About a Pumpkin Plant
This is just a little story about a pumpkin plant I got a few years ago. I've always wanted to write about it somewhere so I can remember it later on and I figured that this would be a good place for it.
When I was going through a really difficult time a few years ago, I discovered a new interest that I had never really looked into before: gardening. It started with strawberries and sunflowers, and then when I got home, I began collecting as many plants as possible to make the biggest garden I've ever had.
This mostly began with finding two big but mostly dead strawberry plants that I immediately felt connected to, and because of a gut feeling and empathy that somehow extends to plants for me, I got them. This started my period of going to stores, looking at the clearance section for mostly dead plants that could potentially be saved, and bringing those back to a healthy state to put in my garden.
This brings us to my favorite little plant I got through this method, a pumpkin plant. It looked like this:
Honestly, it was in better condition than most of the plants I got, but it was unlikely that anyone else would pick it. So, I brought it home.
The only issue with bringing it home was that I was going to my grandparents' house very soon, so I did the only thing I could think of at the time to make sure the plant had a better chance of making it:

I brought it with me. If I remember correctly, I held up that plant next to the window for most of the 1-2 hour ride there so it would get more sun. Why? I'm not really sure how to explain it, but the simplest answer is I just wanted the plant to be in the best condition it could be. So for the most of the ride, it was held up next to the window that had sun shining through, or held very carefully slightly above my lap so it wouldn't shake too much.
Here is the plant at my grandparents' house after finally cutting off the broken stems (I was worried cutting them off would lessen the chance of the plant surviving but it was looking better and I couldn't just fix the broken stems):
It was already doing better!
A couple days later I got back to my house and now... it was time to be planted!!
I love the above picture because I was very excited to plant it and see how much it would grow, and it turns out, it would grow a lot! Here's the picture of the plant a while later:
I'm not sure if that was the year with watermelons too, but most if not all of that is pumpkins. You can also see the bottom of the sunflowers at the edge of the picture!
I wanted to write this story down because it's special to me, and I wanted to have a place to read it again and have all the pictures in one spot. I love how one little act of kindness (like buying a pumpkin plant that I was worried no one else would pick) can lead to something bigger (a half covered garden bed that looks very beautiful and brought me a lot of joy).
I'm hoping to do the same in the spring, go out and buy more plants that aren't in the best condition, and see what comes after.
Sometimes little things can become the most significant.
