I love that there’s an owl in that burnt down church scene with Rust. I love that Rust has a bird tattoo. I love that the one famous shot of TDS01 is the spiral flock of birds. I love that he’s got wings on the back of Crash’s jacket. I love that Rust’s bone structure is so bird coded. Birds are liminal, always between states—land and sky, life and death, movement and stillness. That’s Rust, too. Never fully here, never fully gone. His relationship with birds, his association to birds, and all the bird imagery needs to be studied more in depth. In this thesis I will—

Utena truly said what if Eurydice knew from the start that Orpheus would look back. She knows that this is how the story must end. Orpheus remains optimistically oblivious as he trudges forward. Eurydice waits for him to look back. Look back already, as other so-called "heroes" would. He does not look back. He climbs the crags and steps of the Underworld even as Hades accosts him, leads him down and down and down back to the depths. She wants him to look back, look back and end this spiraling journey of cliffs and chasms. That is how the story ends, after all. Is he purposefully denying fate, or does he truly not know what is to come? All stories have a certain end. He does not look back. She begins to ask him to look back, to beg in woven myth to let it be done already. She throws herself off a cliff, Look back, look back, watch me fall and know that it is done. He casts his head aside as he grasps her arm in his hand. He does not look back. He reaches the precipice, where the story must end even as all else has failed. He is shown a future (a fantasy) without sorrow, without her. He does not look back. Forward, forward. He thinks himself a hero. "Look back," a blade pierces his chest, "look back at your killer. Let this story end, as it should, as it will, for you are no prince." He does not look back. Forward, forward, as rock gives way to dirt. He collapses at the maw of Hades, dewkissed grass at his fingertips. He does not look back. Eurydice steps into sunlight.

Re-watching Andor season 1 for the umpteenth time but boy are there even more gems in there now we know the whole story. Current favourite obsession : all the lines to do with “What will it cost?” (what Mon asks Sculden re his offer of help). He tells her he wants no fee, then goes on to make it clear that she will have to pay a very high price indeed.
Then there’s Luthen. Telling Lonni that he’s “worth more” than Kreegyr and his 30 or 50 (!) men and that his career has “profited greatly” from the Rebellion; the opposite is true of Tay Kolma in s2. Cassian, told right at the beginning “You pay at the end”, his early life built on cost and borrowing, scamming and paying back… until this becomes something much more literal. From the salyards of Ferrix to Luthen and Kleya’s antiquities business, this is a world of transactions and negotiations. Trying to find the value. Revolutions are expensive, but so is every day life. But the theme becomes increasingly metaphorical. Being in debt, weighing up the cost, paying the price.
Then there’s the related theme of gambling. “They make a game of it, so we play”; “ we can be the winners here”; “ we can split up the winnings”; “ we will never have a better chance than this”… all with Cassian trying to “win and walk away”. Mon realises that if she wants to win, she can’t walk away. We know now that Luthen’s entire life is effectively about repaying his debt to Kleya.
All culminating in one of the most repeated lines in season 2. “If I die tonight, was it worth it?” asks Niya, the frightened young mechanic. “This – this makes it worth it,” Cassian persuades her. The moment of commitment makes it worth it. The act of sacrifice itself. Yes, there’s some manipulation there, but it’s also something he believes. Because in a way, he has no choice. You have to believe this kind of commitment is worth it. You have to hope that your sacrifices might make a difference. Rebellions are built on hope.
“Make it worth it,” Cassian tells Mon when she asks how she could ever thank him. When Cassian tells Wilmon of Luthen’s death, he tells him “He made it worth it”.
Is there any price too high when it comes to defeating a tyranny? The theme evolves through the series as the stakes become higher and the sacrifices ever more painful.
Ultimately, in order to win… for some there will be no walking away.
