Re reading A Study in Scarlet and thinking about thin haggard nosy John Watson and young manic showoff Sherlock Holmes
Also got very emotional about the idea that Holmes has bad hair because he doesn’t see why he should care and dislikes barbers (being touched by a stranger!) so Watson cuts it to look more distinguished so Lestrade will take him more seriously

Rereading The Hound Of The Baskervilles with my mom and cackling at how the INSTANT Watson is apart from Holmes he turns into the most romantic gothic Victorian horror narrator ever. He is no longer shackled. He is living his goth crime girlie fantasy.

Regency Phrase Guide 📃🪶
Tumblr media
Regency Phrase Guide is a reference work intended to help writers of Regency-era stories by allowing them quickly to check whether a certain phrase was in use in the era, and if so, how it was used. The earliest attestation dates of phrases that postdate the Regency era might also make this guide useful to writers of neo-Victorian fiction.
Other guides which provide first attestation dates, such as etymonline or the Oxford dictionary, concern themselves with words, not phrases. This guide contains information that, to my knowledge, does not appear anywhere else.
The Guide is constantly being added to and updated. The latest version can always be found here on AO3, where it is also available for download.
Reblogs and shares are very appreciated! I would love for the Guide to make its way to anybody who might find it useful or interesting.

I literally CANNOT with the BBC radio dramas anymore because what the hell was The Devil's Foot. like. do you really mean to tell me that Holmes and Watson sit on this cliff overlooking the sea and Watson's nagging at Holmes for being gloomy and tells him that the view is romantic, and out of nowhere, Holmes just recites this bit from Wagner's Tristan and Isolda: "so let us die, and never part; together, for the rest of time; no more waking, no more fearing; nameless, endless, loving, sharing; existing only in each other; rapt in love and death and darkness" like. what do you mean Sherlock Holmes casually recites poetry with Watson next to him in the most romantic place ever? and THEN, you would think that it'd be enough for the BBC and their queer coding of every single episode, but NO, they go even further and MAKE HOLMES SAY IT WHEN HE'S HALLUCINATING BECAUSE OF THE POISON. like. sir. what the fuck. he's losing his mind, literally dying next to Watson and we hear that whole poetry bit again. "so let us die, and never part" they are dying, HELLO???? "rapt in love and death and darkness" when indeed he and Watson are in that moment rapt in love and death and darkness. what the FUCK.
and do NOT make me started on the delivery of "I thought I knew my Watson" because it made me go absolutely feral. fucking hell. someone sedate me after this.

Something so cute about how Holmes sometimes calls Watson “my boy” and Watson sometimes calls Holmes “old man” even though Watson is a few years older (as far as I can tell they never reverse this)

We need to do what we can to protect the Internet Archive. Here is a petition that you can sign.
This petition alone might not be enough, but everything we can throw at this counts.

Okay so Victorian erotica is literally the most heinous, morally bankrupt, horrific shit I've ever read - but I've read a fair bit, partly from historical interest but also because a while back I helped a friend with a university project she was doing about censorship and pornography in 19th century England.
Anyway I need to share with you all the most hilarious line that has ever been written, circa 1887:
