NFL Week 17 Game Picks
The Bleeding Green Nation writers picks are in for Week 17 of the 2018 regular season schedule! Each week we’ll predict the winners of each and every NFL game. We’ll tally the results along the way and see who comes out on top at the end of the season. After Week 16, there’s a tie between myself and James Keane. It’s coming down to the wire! (Although we’ll still be doing playoff picks as well.)
When it comes to this week’s Philadelphia Eagles versus Washington Redskins game, most of our writers are feeling very confident in the reigning Super Bowl champions. Our writers are then split on the outcome of the Minnesota Vikings versus Chicago Bears game, which could determine if the Eagles will make the playoffs or not.
Feel free to post your own predictions or discuss the writer predictions in the comments. You can also vote for who you think will win the games. I’ll tally those results in a “BGN Community” column. Vote in the polls beneath the table.
Let’s get to this week’s picks!

How can established small businesses -- not startups -- get access to capital?
Billy Penn is one of more than 20 news organizations producing Broke in Philly, a collaborative reporting project on economic mobility. Read more at brokeinphilly.org or follow at @BrokeInPhilly.
Running a small business is never easy. Even after 11 years, Allegra Derengowski can’t count the number of financial challenges she faces.
As the founder of Birchtree Catering, which runs out of a shared space in Frankford, Derengowski said she’s constantly trying to scrape together enough cash to cover things like paying off her startup debt or hiring experienced staff.
“That’s kind of a trap that a small business can fall into,” she said. “We didn’t start with any capital, we just built it up. So we’re just trying to make it work.”
Derengowski knows others are in the same boat. Embedded in Philly’s community of entrepreneurs, she’s on the board of the Sustainable Business Network, a graduate of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program and an alum of various courses at the Enterprise Center in West Philly.
Through all of this, she’s noticed a phenomenon that she finds problematic:
There seems to be a lot of funding available for small business “growth,” but what about those who have struggled to learn the business and need financial help to keep surviving?
Derengowski submitted that question to Billy Penn via Broke is Listening, our series asking people what they wonder about economic mobility in the city.
In advance of the Broke in Philly reporting collaborative’s free event called Funding the Hustle, set for Thursday, July 18, at the University City Science Center’s Venture Cafe, we explored Derengowski’s question.
Here are some answers, and a list of ways for established biz owners to access capital they need.
Do startups have access to more independent funds than already-existing businesses?
Judy Wicks, founder of the Sustainable Business Network, told Billy Penn she hasn’t personally noticed this phenomenon — but she wouldn’t be surprised if it were true.
“It probably is the case, that they don’t get the attention because it’s not new and exciting,” said Wicks, who launched the original White Dog Cafe and cofounded Urban Outfitters, back when the fashion behemoth was itself a small business. “It’s the sickness of the brand of capitalism.”
Wicks goes out of her way to support Philly’s stock of established shops. She runs the Circle of Aunts & Uncles, which offers low-interest loans and social capital to entrepreneurs that have been open for at least six months, no less.
Her program gives priority to women and people of color — sorely needed in Philly, which ranks ninth out of the 10 biggest cities for minority ownership.
“We try to support local entrepreneurs already building our economy,” Wicks said. “Those are the kinds of businesses I value.”
Another Philly program has a similar focus. The Merchant’s Fund offers “stabilization grants” from $500 to $10,000, only open for entrepreneurs that have been in the game for at least three years.
As one of few easy-to-find funding sources for toddler-aged businesses, the application process is admittedly crowded.
“There is no guarantee of an award,” the website reads. “We recommend that merchants explore other funding sources simultaneously to the grant application process.”
So the private grant game is competitive. What’s the city got to give?
Per Department of Commerce spokesperson Kevin Lessard, there aren’t really any public grants — for new or existing businesses. But there are other opportunities that might help:
And if you’re looking for something from the city that’s not on that list, you could try contacting a business services manager, who’s assigned to help businesses navigate city services. (They’re also bilingual, BTW.)
All that’s well and good, said catering company owner Derengowski, but she still wishes there were more general cash advances available for long-term businesses — instead of funding programs allotted for specific uses.
Still, she said, it’s progress.
“I will say I think the city has changed a lot in the last 10 years, in terms of having available resources,” Derengowski said. “Things are getting much much better than when I started out.”

Philly’s Favorite Cambodian Restaurant Is Back Under a New Name
News
The family behind Khmer Kitchen just opened Sophie's Kitchen on Washington Avenue.
We all let out a few tears when we found out Khmer Kitchen closed its doors for good at 6th and Morris Streets, right? Man, that was a sad day for South Philly.
The Cambodian BYO was beloved by neighbors, by critics, by, quite literally, everyone — so much so, we put it on this list of restaurants we wish hadn’t closed. A Thai restaurant took its spot, which is nice, and it’s not like South Philly is lacking Cambodian restaurants (I Heart Cambodia has great food), but Khmer was special. A family-run, love-on-the-plate kind of place.
And wouldn’t you know it? It’s back.
Kinda.
Sophie’s Kitchen just opened at 522 Washington Avenue — the former Lee’s Bistro & Café. Two members of the Khmer Kitchen family, Sophia Neth and her son, Jordan Chan, are running the show here in the bi-level space. Upstairs, it’s a sit-down restaurant with table service and the same traditional Cambodian fare you remember at Khmer. Downstairs, come December-ish, it’ll be grab-and-go Cambodian street food.
And we couldn’t be more stoked.
Sophie’s Kitchen is open every day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Will the Eagles bench Jalen Mills? Doug Pederson doesn’t want ‘knee-jerk reactions’
You probably want the Eagles to bench Jalen Mills, but on Monday afternoon, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson stressed the importance of not making a “knee-jerk reaction.”
Pederson wasn’t speaking specifically about Mills when he talked about possible personnel changes, but there aren’t really any other candidates to send to the bench.
“We gotta be careful that we’re not just, on a whim, swapping people out,” Pederson said. “Because if you start doing that, it starts moving other people around as well. We’re going to take these next couple of days and really evaluate everybody. … If there’s a change to be made, we’ll make it. If not, we’ll leave it alone.”
If Pederson was thinking of Mills when he said that, it makes sense. Because if the team decided to move Mills from his post at left cornerback, it would obviously affect other spots. It would likely mean Sidney Jones would take over outside and could move Mills inside or possibly take Avonte Maddox away from his newfound role as an extra safety and into the slot.
Jones is a first-round talent and will probably make a great outside corner one day, but — sans a couple plays Sunday — he has been an outstanding slot corner through the first quarter of the season. Is it wise to take him out of that role for the unknown? Maybe, but there’s probably some reason for hesitation.
If the Eagles do decide to either bench Mills or change his role, it’s not like they would make this move in a vacuum. Mills would just be the first domino.
The Eagles lost a tough game Sunday afternoon. They were up two touchdowns and folded before losing to the Titans, 26-23. It was a bad loss and Mills gave up a handful of big plays. It wasn’t all on him, of course, but he’s not just a scapegoat either. Mills has played a big role in the Eagles’ lackluster pass defense.
Here’s what Pederson said Monday specifically about Mills:
It’s tough. These corners are on islands a lot. I think, too, I look at it from an offensive perspective. That when you see a guy that you can maybe attack, you attack. I think that’s what offenses are doing right now. He’s a good player. We have a lot of confidence in him. He has a lot of confidence in himself. A lot of it comes down to just detail the work and understand the situation, what teams are going to try to do against you. Understanding that, and try to use that as a strength. He’s working through it, he’ll get better and we’ll get better as a team.
It might seem obvious that Pederson admitted teams are attacking Mills. We all know it. But it is relatively significant that the head coach is willing to admit it. If teams see a player that they consistently exploit, that’s obviously a big problem.
When asked about the comment later in the press conference, Pederson walked it back some. He said he didn’t think teams were necessarily attacking Mills as much as they’re just attacking the Eagles with big plays on the whole. That’s a little fair, but it’s pretty apparent Mills is the main target.
“Until we can address it and fix it and get better at it in practice, as you guys know, teams will continue to do it,” Pederson said. “It’s like, if a team can’t stop the run, keep running. That’s just where we are right now.”
If Mills is still the starter next week — and the odds are he is — he’ll simply need to play better. The Eagles are against “knee-jerk reactions” but at a certain point, bad play will force their hand.

The Best Thing That Happened This Week: Ed Rendell’s New Gig
The Best Thing This Week
Our ex-mayor is lending some heft to the safe-injection-site movement.
Ed Rendell. (AP Photo/Bradley C. Bower)
You know that saying about those who don’t remember the past being doomed to repeat it? Americans have been doomed when it comes to drug and alcohol abuse for a long, long time. Our collective Puritanical mind-set has encouraged us to view substance abusers as morally deficient weaklings who ought to just pull themselves up by the bootstraps and be virtuous the way we are (we say as we sip our wine).
And it hasn’t worked. We haven’t gotten any more sober as a result of centuries of societal opprobrium. Last year, there were more than 1,200 fatal drug overdoses in the city—an increase of 34 percent over 2016. (We have the highest overdose rate of any major U.S. city—yay us!) A full 88 percent of those overdoses involved opioids. Nationwide, some 170 men and women die of drug overdoses every single day. But oh, hey, sure, let’s just keep telling users to straighten up and fly right.
Or, you know, we could try something different. That’s what former governor and Philly mayor Ed Rendell has decided to do. He’s joined the board of Safehouse, a new nonprofit dedicated to opening a safe injection site — it would be the first in the nation — where Philadelphians could shoot up drugs they purchase elsewhere, but under medical supervision. (Three-quarters of Philly’s overdose deaths in 2017 occurred, not on the street, but in private homes.) Rendell says he was inspired to join Safehouse by the overdose death in 2016 of a longtime family friend.
Where to put such a site will, no doubt, inspire much NIMBY handwringing. But we’re smart enough as a city to work through the challenges. A report earlier this year based on evidence from cities with such sites in Europe and Canada estimated that opening one in Philly could save 25 to 75 lives per year, not to mention literally millions of dollars in health-care costs, and reduce the number of addicts panhandling on city streets. “I’m absolutely at peace that I’m doing the right thing,” Rendell says.
As an alternative, we could just keep banging our heads against the wall. C’mon, doesn’t it still feel good?

Dramatic Video Shows Plane Crash Into Kids' Therapy Center in Fla.
A Florida business’s surveillance camera captured video footage of a small plane exploding into a fireball after it crashed into a building housing a therapy center for children with autism in Fort Lauderdale over the weekend.
Two people on board the plane were killed in Saturday’s crash.
The Cessna 335 had taken off from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport Saturday afternoon when, moments later, the plane crashed into a building in the 1000 block of Northwest 62nd Street.
Video footage from nearby H & J Electronics International Inc. shows the plane skidding across the parking lot, trailed by heavy smoke, and then erupting into flames upon impact.
Several people, including children, could be seen running out of the building. There were eight adults and five children inside the center at the time of the crash but none were injured.
Officials haven't released the identities of the two who were on the plane. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident.

NFL's best pass-rusher? Trash-talker? Nastiest? O-linemen weigh in
FRISCO, Texas -- Some of the league's best offensive linemen were in the same room for three days last week. All-Pros, Pro Bowl players and long-time starters, all right there to provide insight on what one player insisted was the "most skilled position" in football.
That can be debated. So can other topics, such as: Who is the most dominant pass-rusher in the NFL? Who has the best move? Which offensive lineman would be a superstar if he played a sexier position?
With so many top players in one place for the OL Masterminds summit, we decided to ask around the room for answers to those questions and more. Here are the results after polling 10 offensive linemen:
play
1:36
The NFL Live crew makes predictions for the league, including Aaron Donald winning the MVP and Philip Rivers winning a Super Bowl.
Best pass-rusher
Aaron Donald, Los Angeles Rams
There are only three options. The votes were spread fairly evenly between Donald, Von Miller and Khalil Mack. They're clearly head and shoulders above the competition. Donald came out the slight winner, though. One lineman talked about how he had two hands locked into Donald's shoulder pads on one play and thought it was over. But the Rams' defensive tackle dipped and shook off the usually reliable grips of that established player and was on the quarterback within seconds. The offensive lineman considered the move voodoo magic.
"It's not even close. It's not even fair." -- Bucs center Ryan Jensen on Donald
Robin Alam/Icon Sportswire
Best move
Khalil Mack's outside spin, Chicago Bears
This was mentioned by a handful of guys. It almost seemed like an urban legend that has taken on a life of its own. Guys can only laugh when they mention or describe it at this point. Bears tackle Charles Leno Jr. described it as an outside, inside, chop-spin. Lane Johnson said it's something Mack sets up with a stunt that he runs earlier, which makes the tackle bite inside. Then he comes with the nasty spin. The thing is, most edge rushers don't spin to the outside. Then again, Mack isn't most players.
"It was the nastiest move I've ever seen. It was one of the dirtiest moves I've seen of all time." -- Leno on Mack's outside spin move
EPA/Craig Lassig
OL who would be a star if he played a sexier position
Lane Johnson, Philadelphia Eagles
It's easy to overlook an offensive lineman. Heck, they're sometimes referred to as Big Uglies, which speaks for itself. Offensive linemen traditionally get noticed when they allow sacks. Otherwise, they generally fly under the radar regardless of personality. They're not quarterbacks, wide receivers or even pass-rushers. But if they were, players believe Johnson would be a star. He's athletic (a former quarterback and tight end), talks trash and doesn't hold back. There is a WWE feel to his approach. Johnson understands he's in the entertainment business and plays his role well. If only he were a skill-position player, everybody would know him well. Others who were given consideration for this title were Eagles center Jason Kelce, Bears guard Kyle Long and Titans tackle Taylor Lewan.
"If [Johnson] were a QB or receiver, he'd be in the headlines every week. I think today a lot of guys are concerned about what people might think about you, or [how they] view you. But Lane really doesn't give a s---." -- Eagles guard Brandon Brooks on Johnson
Biggest trash-talker
Mike Daniels, Green Bay Packers
Chicago's Akiem Hicks doesn't stop talking during games. Former Seattle defensive end Frank Clark is pretty chatty. But perhaps the biggest trash-talker is Daniels. He has caught the ears of more than a few offensive linemen over the years. What's interesting is that Saints left tackle Terron Armstead feels that most of the chatter comes from interior guys rather than on the edge.
"Pretty chatty guy [Mike Daniels]. Pretty X-rated. He says some off-the-wall stuff. Kind of funny. He's always talking." -- Jensen
Dirtiest/nastiest defender
Ndamukong Suh, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Vontaze Burfict's name surfaced. He has quite the reputation. So does Suh, some of it self-inflicted and some of it perhaps undeserved. Still, his name was uttered more than anyone else's when linemen fielded this question. One player said Suh was more a fierce competitor than a dirty player. Another added that his reputation is probably a little overblown. Daniels, Donald and Derek Wolfe also were mentioned.
"At this point it's probably a little undeserved." -- Chiefs tackle Mitchell Schwartz on Suh being dirty
Lee Coleman/Icon Sportswire
Offensive lineman they like to watch
Trent Williams, Washington Redskins
This was interesting in that it varied quite a bit by individual. Offensive linemen seem to look for players who play the same position with similar builds and skills. So Schwartz watches a lot of right tackles like Johnson, Rob Havenstein and Ryan Ramczyk. New England's Shaq Mason keeps his eyes on Ron Leary and Trai Turner. The left tackles always seemed to begin with Williams and include Tyron Smith and Joe Staley.
"Trent is an [Oklahoma] guy. I like his style of play, too. His demeanor, it's nasty. I like that." -- Johnson
Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire
Player they hate to face
Von Miller, Denver Broncos
There were a wide variety of options seemingly based on style of play. Vikings defensive tackle Linval Joseph was mentioned because of his sheer strength. That makes for a tough afternoon. Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan earned consideration because he brings power along with speed. A complete package. Johnson even surprisingly brought up Dallas' DeMarcus Lawrence -- despite their sometimes public back-and-forth -- because Lawrence is always a menace and gives him a good matchup, with each of them winning their fair share. But more than anybody, when players face Miller they know they're in for a looooooong day, year after year.
"[Miller] keeps getting better every year. He's a guy, he obviously does the pass-rushing camp -- he's really interested in learning more about his craft. He continues to maintain and improve his athletic ability and his skill is also through the roof. I think that has come the longest way. He keeps adding stuff and obviously he has one of the best defensive lines in the NFL. So he's always a tough matchup." -- Schwartz

Check Out Pineville Fishtown’s Decadent New Brunch Menu
News
They're serving a Double Down-esque breakfast sandwich and unlimited Bloodys and mimosas on weekends.
Pickle-brined fried chicken Benedict | Pineville Tavern
Pineville Fishtown brought comforting tavern-style fare — plus an impressive upstairs piano bar — to the corner of Huntingdon and Gaul Streets in Kensington over the summer. And now, they’ve rolled out a decadent weekend brunch menu.
Chef Drew Abruzzese (who co-owns the spot with his dad Andrew) brainstormed items for the new brunch menu with longtime mentor and family friend Matt Levin. The two worked together at New Hope’s Moonlight back in the day and collaborated on now-classic items on original Pineville Tavern’s menu. Since then, Levin’s worked at Lacroix at the Rittenhouse and Charlie Trotter’s in Chicago; he’s currently executive chef at Brûlée Catering.
And the results are some next-level brunch fare: Pineville is serving a “Double Down”-style breakfast sandwich with a fried egg, scrapple, Cooper Sharp, and jalapeño maple bacon jam between two pieces of pickle-brined fried chicken. There’s also bananas Foster stuffed French toast made with challah, cream cheese icing, and whiskey caramel sauce, plus their Port Fishington breakfast sandwich, with kielbasa from Swiacki Meats in Port Richmond, fried eggs, cheese, and sriracha ketchup on a Kaiser roll.
If that’s not enough over-the-top goodness, $20 gets you two hours of unlimited Bloody Marys or mimosas during brunchtime, 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Check out the full brunch menu below (click to embiggen).

Flexible scheduling: NFL flex scheduling can occur as soon as Week 5. The league can flex no more than two games between Week 5 and Week 10.
The NFL schedule follows a set pattern each year so we already have an idea of who the Eagles will play in future seasons.
Six of the Eagles’ sixteen opponents will always be their NFC East rivals: the Cowboys, Giants, and Redskins. The Eagles will also play the entirety of one of the NFC Divisions. The NFC North is in rotation for 2019, which means the Eagles will play against the Bears, Packers, Lions, and Vikings.
Another four games come against an AFC Division. This year, the Eagles will face the AFC East: Patriots, Bills, Jets, and Dolphins. Get ready for that Super Bowl LII rematch.
The remaining two games come against NFC teams that finish in the same spot in the divisional standings as the Eagles. Since the Eagles finished second in their division in 2018 they will play the Seahawks from the NFC West and the Falcons from the NFC South.
If the formulaic schedule doesn’t change, this is what the Eagles’ future opponents will look like:
2020: NFC West, AFC North, NFC North and South divisional finish, NFC East
2021: NFC South, AFC West, NFC North and West divisional finish, NFC East
2022: NFC North, AFC South, NFC South and West divisional finish, NFC East

One week ago, South Jersey realtor Katherine Cohen was trying to get the word out about the bread-free pickle sandwiches that she sells at Elsie’s, a Haddon Township deli she opened with her husband about two months ago. Well, the word is now officially out.
A viral Thrillist video on her pickle sandwich is up to more than 14 million views in just five days. Outlets like Buzzfeed and Bustle have taken notice, as has, er, Lance Bass. And on Monday, she was up bright and early to get to New York for a taping of Good Morning America’s Strahan & Sara. Naturally, we had to get her on the phone after the taping to learn more.
Well, somebody’s had quite a week. I am so exhausted. I was up at 3 a.m. and had to get to New York at 5 a.m. for Strahan and Sara and bring 100 pickle sandwiches with me. They wanted us to feed the audience and get their reaction. I didn’t even know who Michael Strahan was! I had to ask my husband.
How much did you pay a restaurant publicist to blow up your pickle sandwich? Nothing. It blows my bind. This is a completely organic perfect storm. I keep getting all these phone calls and emails. It’s just crazy.
So just to make sure I understand this correctly, you don’t have any kind of sandwiches on bread at Elsie’s. Just pickle sandwiches. Is that right? There is no bread in the house. You can have a sandwich on thick slices of pickles that replace the bread. Or we also do roll-ups, like sushi rolls but with sandwich fillings and the pickle is the wrapping. We serve them with chopsticks.
Pickle sandwich creator Katherine Cohen in front of Elsie’s in Haddon Township.
How in the world did you wake up one day and decide to make a pickle sandwich? My family used to have a deli down the shore. My mom is diabetic, and I’m always on a quest to make her eat better, and so I thought that we could just make sandwiches out of pickles instead of bread. So we started selling them at that deli, which has since closed. But mostly it was just regular sandwiches there. At our new place, it’s all pickle sandwiches.
Was your family always in the food industry? Yup. When I was a kid, my parents had pizza shops and I grew up working in them. And now, at Elsie’s, my seven-year-old daughter comes in. She’s learned how to wash the dishes. She mops the floors. That was me when I was a kid. Always working.
Did people think you were crazy when you decided to get rid of bread? My dad thought I was crazy. He’s that old-school deli guy. Everybody wants bread. Nobody wants pickles. He pushed back until he saw it work.
You can’t patent a pickle sandwich, right? I’m assuming other people will knock you off. Oh they already have been. But you can’t just make a pickle sandwich on just any pickle. We searched high and low to find the right pickle. We have a private agreement with a commercial pickler, and it’s impossible to keep up with the demand. We’ve been selling about 300 sandwiches a day at anywhere from $8.50 to $9.50 each.
You mentioned your mom’s health being one of the reasons behind the creation of your pickle sandwich. But what about all that salt? We have people coming in three days a week for a pickle sandwich. People who have celiac and can’t eat bread. People who are diabetic. But for people concerned about the sodium, we also offer a cucumber roll-up, where you get the same fillings but rolled up in a plain cucumber without the pickling.
Now that you have all of this attention, what’s the next step? I have had several phone calls with an attorney regarding which direction we want to take. Do we want to franchise? Do we want to license the name? Do we want to expand ourselves? It’s a conversation we’re having right now.
Any advice for a small entrepreneur like yourself who wants to get publicity like this … for free? Do what you love to do. It’s all about instinct. If you feel like what you’re doing is 100 percent positive, do it and accompany it with tons of amazing photos on Facebook and Instagram. Share it with the world. Man, I sound like a big hippie.

Her fiancé, Joseph Ferry, and another man, Dennis Palandro, were also killed.
The driver who police say caused the crash, 29-year-old Keith Campbell, is facing charges.
He was suffering from 15 to 20 stab wounds behind the wheel, which were possibly self-inflicted.
Authorities say, shortly before the crash, he was pursued by police in Delaware for erratic driving.

Sansom Street Finally Reopens After Last Year’s Business-Drenching Deluge
City
When a Center City water main burst in the middle of the night last July, it launched some 15 million gallons of liquid into the street.
Left: The initial flood (Photo courtesy ABC6). Right: The spiffy new road at Sansom and Juniper Street (Photo by Andy Backstrom).
What is it with this city and giant, gaping holes in the ground? There’s the sinkhole along Baltimore Avenue in West Philly, the “large void” that appeared near Independence Hall on 5th Street in the spring, and of course, the void de résistance, the water-main break that has closed off a stretch of Sansom and Juniper streets in Center City for the better part of a year.
You can say goodbye to the latter hole, though. On Friday the city is finally reopening Sansom Street between 13th and Broad, as well as Juniper Street from Chestnut to Sansom, after a $1.7 million repair effort that took 11 months. (Part of Juniper, from Sansom to Walnut, will remain closed due to construction on an apartment building there.)
If you don’t quite recall what the scene looked like last July, when the hole was born and temporarily transformed Center City into a not-very-appealing public pool, here’s a visual refresher.

— Greg Argos (@GregArgosCBS3) July 3, 2018
Many of the city’s water mains date to the 1800s, leaving them vulnerable to corrosion. When the Sansom Street main burst in the middle of the night in July, it launched some 15 million gallons of liquid into the street. Businesses flooded. The Greek restaurant Opa was shuttered for months. And even then, after the water was drained and businesses reopened, they struggled to attract customers — you know, with the massive construction equipment and road closure blocking foot traffic. The effect was to cordon off restaurants and bars as if they had the plague.
The repairs — which involved replacing more than 200 total feet of various water pipes, repaving Sansom from 13th to Broad, replacing street lights and sidewalks, and re-lining hundreds of feet of sewer — were expected to be complete by the early part of this year. Clearly that didn’t end up happening. The delays were apparently due to the various utilities companies, like Philadelphia Gas Works, PECO, and Comcast, which had to undertake their own repairs to their subterranean street infrastructure, separate from the Water Department.
The Inquirer reported that the Midtown Village Retail Association provided a $15,000 grant to all businesses affected by the flood, which was to be spent on advertising and attracting foot traffic in the aftermath of the flood. Meanwhile, businesses can also apply to the city for a certain amount of reimbursement of lost revenue. But the city’s liability totals only $500,000, and there have already been $1 million worth of restitution claims. (The city says roughly 30 businesses experienced some form of water damage from the flood.)
But at least the saga is finally over. McGillin’s Olde Ale House is throwing a party to celebrate on Friday. And now the Water Department can turn its attention to that pesky sinkhole 3 miles away on Baltimore Avenue, which has been disrupting traffic and businesses of its own. People in West Philly: Just be grateful your sinkhole is only supposed to take three weeks to fix.

Famed Central Park Mandarin duck spotted in North Jersey
The famous Mandarin duck that has been drawing crowds for months in New York City's Central Park has made another mysterious journey that is surprising bird watchers.
The duck – a species that normally hails from China and Japan and was unexpectedly spotted in New York in early October – recently has been disappearing for a few days at a time and worrying its adoring fans.
But a sighting discovered that the male duck travels to Bergen County, New Jersey, for a few days at a time.
The duck caused mass panic among its fans when it disappeared from Central Park, but since then, bird watchers have spotted him not just in North Jersey, but also other areas west of the park up to the Hudson River.
According to the Manhattan Bird Alert account on Twitter, the duck was back home in Central Park safe and sound Tuesday morning.

Volunteers Deliver Christmas Toys To 1,500 Abused And Neglected Kids
Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook Twitter
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Holiday wishes are coming true for more than 1,500 children in the Philadelphia area. Saturday was the annual Child Advocates Holiday Toy Drive Delivery Day.
Dozens of volunteers filled 15th and Market Streets Saturday for the Support Center for Child Advocates’ annual toy drive. The organization supports abused or neglected children.
“We do see some of the kids,” volunteer John Branigan said. “They’re waiting at the door, the dog is barking, the kids can’t wait to see the presents. It’s like a pre-Christmas before our own Christmas.”
“Our kids come from poor families and our donors step up,” executive director Frank Cervone said. “We have 10,000 gifts. Snoopy is looking for a home tonight.”
Local Business Owner’s First ‘Hoagies For The Homeless’ Handout A Smashing Success
Green bags full of toys were picked up, loaded into cars and distributed to over 1,500 kids in the Philadelphia area.
“It’s wonderful. The kids are just so excited and it’s just really fulfilling to bring that kind of joy to their homes this time of year,” board of directors member Mariann Styles said.
Volunteer Dave Martin was cramming the bed of his truck full to take presents back to Delaware County.
“You get to the door, their eyes are lighting up,” Martin said. “That’s what Christmas is about, that’s the fun for us.”

Winter Decorating: After the Holidays
Jan. 24, 2019
The house may feel empty and cold with the warmth of the holidays behind us however we've come up with a few great ways to decorate before the spring decorations hit the shelves! First, as with any change to the house, it’s always best to do a deep clean. We’ve have people in and out of the home of the holidays, decorations creating dust and food throughout the kitchen, dining room and probably living room (if you hosted!). Now is a great time to refresh all your cleaning products and use them before redecorating.
The warmth of the tree, the lights and maybe even a festive throw pillow or blanket has gone and you’re back to the old pillows and decor, but it doesn’t need to feel that way! Adding in a plant (real or faux) can really bring a room back to life. Large potted floor plants are a great way to bring in some extra oxygen and fill that gaping hole where the tree used to be.
Next, seasonal coloring seems to be a thing of the past. Pastels are typically left for spring and darker hues for the winter, but why? Why surround yourself with darker colors when it’s already dark more than 50% of the day?! Break out those lighter colors to allow for a brighter room even when the sun is setting at 5pm. Cooler light colors are a good way to transition from the winter months into spring.
Whether your winter decorations are still up or you’re already decorated for spring it’s always nice to do a refresh. We hope this has helped...if not, try Tidying Up on Netflix for inspiration!

Game Preview | Matinee vs Thunder Marks Marquee Match Up
Scene Setter:
The 76ers (30-16) will aim to keep momentum alive as they host the Oklahoma City Thunder (26-18) for the first and only time this season Saturday at The Center.
The Sixers have won three in a row, and seven of their last nine.
This strong streak could not be more timely. Saturday’s matchup marks the second of 11 games in the coming weeks against playoff-seeded opponents.
“We’re under the microscope a lot as it relates to this portion of our season,” Brett Brown said. “It doesn’t get any easier as time unfolds.”
If you’re looking under the microscope, you’re seeing good things.
The Sixers’ last two outings have yielded two of their best performances this season: a 149-107 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, followed by a 1290-96 victory over the Indiana Pacers. The team assisted on 40 of 55 field goals against the Wolves, and 38 of 46 baskets Thursday in Indianapolis.
Now averaging 27.5 assists per game, the Sixers are second in the league in that category, trailing only the Golden State Warriors (28.8 apg). The Sixers, however, pace the NBA with an assist percentage of 66.2.
“I think everybody’s just buying in and really trying to get better,” said Ben Simmons, who, along with his four fellow starters, has reached double-figures in scoring each of the last two games. “We’re having fun out there.”
Heading into Saturday’s matinee, Oklahoma City is second in the league in rebounds per game (49.1).
Ever unafraid, Joel Embiid said he’s looking forward to facing off with the Thunder frontcourt.
“They’ve been playing really well. It’s going to be a tough matchup. I love playing against Steven (Adams), physical guy, I like that contact.”
Adams averages 10.1 rebounds per game, while Embiid averages 13.3 (fifth in the league).
Last season, the Sixers lost both meetings with the Thunder, including a triple-overtime thriller at The Center.
“[Saturday] is an important game,” Embiid said. “In situations like that—I’m going to want to get that win.”
Opponent Outlook:
The Thunder’s defense has been one of the league’s best this season, ranking second in defensive rating (104.0 points allowed per 100 possessions), and first overall in steals per game (10.3). Five-time All-Star Paul George is averaging a career-high 26.6 points per game, while Russell Westbrook is averaging a triple-double (21.8 ppg, 10.6 rpg, 10.7 apg) for the third consecutive season. That being said, the team has dropped five of its last six.
