Raven scoffed softly, taking a sip of her drink. "I won't hold your sunny disposition against you if you don't hold my impatience for douchebags against me," she replied, shrugging. She was pretty sure Kiki wasn't serious, so she kept her tone light and the slightest smile on her lips.
After all, she had surely done everyone a favour by scaring off the creep who had been trying to hit on anything with curves at the bar. The bartender certainly hadn't seemed keen on having him around, either. And if any innocents overheard all the intricately gory details of the tale she had spun about his "imminent demise"... rent on the island was free, so they could probably afford therapy. Everyone in Mount Phoenix definitely already needed it, anyway. Again, a favour.
"Does this mean you won't give me a free drink if I bat my eyelashes? I think I deserve one after that. Did you smell that guy's BO? Are incels allergic to showers or something?"

"A person asks to see the morgue one time, for research, and suddenly they're 'you again'. Rude." Raven muttered, rolling her eyes. To be fair, maybe Cedric could just sense the resentment for authority radiating off of her. It wasn't exactly subtle, after all. Even if he didn't seem like an overly bad person, a cop is a cop.
"Are you gonna get all uptight and weird if I ask about the island's murder stats? I'm just curious - you know, about how the stats might differ because of the human vs. god and demigod demographics. Considering all the gods have historically been pretty okay with murder, does it happen a lot around here? Could you guys even arrest a god, or do they just get carte blanche?"

book talk;
@mpliuwei
Whoever said that the first draft was the hardest was a filthy liar. Or, maybe that was recency bias talking, as Raven sat in The Flower Mill staring at the annotated document on her laptop. Sure, the first draft is always a struggle, but retreading the same ground to revise over and over again was way more of a slog, in her mind. At least things felt fresh and exciting during the first draft.
It probably didn't help that one of her editor's biggest suggestions was to add in a romantic subplot to appeal to a wider audience. As fucking if.
Turning away from the screen, she flipped through one of the reference books she had brought with her. Nothing inspiring there. She basically knew the material cover-to-cover by now. So, letting out an irate huff, she grabbed her empty mug and approached the employee at the counter. "Another Americano. Thanks," she grumbled, leaning against the counter. She watched him for a moment, chewing on the inside of her cheek. "Hey. Do you think every book needs to shoehorn-in a romance plot?"

❛ oh great, it's you again. ❜
❛ you? kill me? that's funny. ❜
❛ for being someone you hate, i'm sure on your mind a lot. ❜

❛ you really are an asshole, you know that? ❜
❛ i'm the asshole? what does that make you then? ❜
❛ sometimes i think you must hate me. ❜
❛ i thought you said you never wanted to see me again. ❜
❛ if you want me to go, then you have to tell me to leave. ❜
❛ well, someone's cranky today. ❜

❛ is that a challenge? ❜
❛ ah, so you're not heartless after all. ❜

scream queens;
@mpxcassandra
Raven was in her element, as she always was this time of year. The Hallow's Eve Ball was everything she had hoped - packed full of spooky decor and elaborate costumes and yummy creepy cocktails. She could have done without most of the people there, but tolerating the crowd was well worth it. She felt absolutely content as she wandered between the other party-goers, prop axe in her bloodied hands.
The Etsy seamstress she had commissioned to make her dress had done a fantastic job, and all the details were just right. Geez, if only she could achieve this level of perfection in that damn penultimate chapter she had been tearing her hair out over for weeks... But she wasn't going to think about work tonight.
Her face lit up when she spotted a certain drummer through the crowd, and she immediately pushed her way over. She had been a little worried that she wouldn't get the chance to talk to Cassie, since she had been up on stage most of the night. "Hey, I need to axe you a question," she began, casually resting the bloody prop on her shoulder. "... Get it? Axe?"
Hm. Maybe those cocktails were stronger than she had thought.

“Friendly reminder that the age of technology is coming to an end and a new age of blood magic and dark rituals will take its place.”
"Ah, if only," Raven sighed, liking one last post before slipping her phone into her pocket. Claire had done her a favour with that comment, breaking her out of doom-scrolling while she waited for her bubble tea in the busy shop.
"Unfortunately, I think we're heading more in the Black Mirror technological dystopia direction. Much less fun, much more existential dread and ChatGPT... Really, we need some kind of apocalypse to send us back to the ancient times of blood magic so that the earth can heal."

“Being equally obsessed with each other sounds hot to me.”
Raven hummed thoughtfully, shifting to look up at Cassie's from her position, laying on the couch with her head in the other girl's lap. "Hm... depends. In the Wuthering Heights way? Not hot. Red flag. I like a bit of danger, but don't have the patience for that toxic controlling shit. But in the non-toxic, cute way, like..." She paused, eyebrows knitting together. Did non-toxic love stories even exist? Maybe every single writer on earth needed some serious therapy.
Okay, not maybe. Definitely.
"... Aang and Katara? Had to dig deep there. But being cutely obsessed with each other does sound hot. Everyone wants to feel like they're the centre of someone else's whole universe, right? The last thing they think about before they go to sleep, the first thing they think about when they wake up... all that mushy rom-com shit."

“Do something today that would’ve gotten you burnt at the stake four hundred years ago.”
Raven let out a small sound that was half giggle and half scoff, glancing up from her book. It was a good ice breaker, she had to admit - both because she was rereading a book on the witch trials in preparation for editing her novel, and because that was exactly the type of rebellious sentiment she could get behind. Maybe it would be inspiration for her next tattoo, since it would be very on-brand for her.
"As if its not enough to just be a woman, here I am reading. A girl? Being literate? Clearly the work of the devil, you know," she commented, offering him a wry smile. Considering how deep she was into witch trial lore, she could have probably named another dozen or two things that she was just passively doing that would have gotten her burned as a witch way back when. "If your every action isn't making Puritan ghosts clutch their pearls in abject horror, are you even living?"

mpxcassandra:
Late Night Fanservice
Cassandra watched Raven’s reactions, smirking slightly as she could tell the other was pleased to see her. Cassie had found herself thinking back to her after their first meeting from time to time, though she had never let herself linger too long over it. When she had noticed the other, she had reason to suspect Hexed was the only reason she was there, not knowing why a writer like herself would have desire to be here. Regardless of the truth, it was the thought that she held onto.
Taking a second to set down the glass by the woman’s notebook, she turned her gaze back to her. She hummed out, as if acting like she had to think about where. However, her free hand reached up just a few moments afterward, taking Raven’s hand with the pen and moving it so that the tip hovered over her chest where her heart was. Even if it was a slight cliche, this was definitely some of the best “fan service” she had ever performed.
“Yes. For tonight, all mine.” She speaks playfully, not too concerned on what the night would lead to. “Sign your name here if you are brave enough.”
Raven’s cheeks turned just a faintest shade of pink as Cassie moved her pen, although her smile only grew at how brazen she was being. After all, she liked a woman who was direct and knew what she wanted. “Isn’t it usually the rockstar who gets to sign boobs?” She teased, not hesitating a moment before scrawling her signature across the other woman’s skin. After all, it was apparently a matter of proving her bravery, and she was no coward.
“Does this mean I get a HEXED rendition of Poor Unfortunate Souls?” She asked, flashing the drummer a smile as she closed her notebook and returned it to her purse. She waved over the bartender and ordered a mojito before turning so that she was fully facing Cassie, propping her elbow on the bar and resting her chin in her palm.
“So, now that I’m all yours, what do you want to do tonight?”

“There should be a dating app where you talk to people who borrowed the same books from the library.”
"Honestly, that would be a way better basis for compatibility than any other app has," Raven agreed, running a finger along the book spines as she searched for her desired tome. She stopped when her finger reached what she was looking for: a book on 17th century German fashion. Sometimes writing involved researching things you never thought necessary.
"Although, I have to admit, this is the first time in a while I've been to the library. When it comes to fiction, I tend to prefer owning my own copy - but scholarly books are expensive as hell, so those I always borrow." She paused, looking at some of the other related books on the shelf and grabbing one that looked like it could also be useful to her. "Maybe expand the theoretical app to consider GoodReads reviews and Kindle purchases?"

“I think it’s so neat that everyone develops their own unique handwriting even though we’re all taught to write our letters the same way. Really, it’s so cute.”
Raven blinked, examining the small, neat print in her notebook before looking up at the guy who had spoken. This must have been the photographer she was supposed to meet. He looked more like he belonged in front of a camera - but to each their own, she supposed. "I've never really thought about it... but you're right, that is pretty cute," she replied, a smile tugging at her lips. The choice of the word cute was interesting, but she didn't comment on it.
After a moment, she pushed her pen and notebook toward him, tapping the blank half of the page. "Now that you've said that, though, I need to see your handwriting. They say you can tell a lot about a person by the way they write, you know. How open they are, how emotional, creative versus methodical, etc. I read a book on it in high school."

“Half of me is a hopeless romantic and the other half of me is, well, an asshole.”
“Having a body causes me so much agony. I wish I was just a floating entity with no physical form.”
“How do I overthink so much and still make the wrong decision?”
““I can fix him!” You can’t even fix your sleep schedule, bestie.”
“I don’t care if your body is a temple. Call me when it’s been closed down and taken over by Spirit Halloween.”
“I don’t know about soulmates, but those people who eat parts of the food or candy that you don’t like and you do the same for them… We’ve lived a hundred lifetimes together, probably.”
“I don’t think we can romanticize our way out of this one, boys.”
“If you see me in the streets, just know that my mind is in the void. I’m physically alive, but mentally checked out.”
“I guess we all learned a valuable lesson. Except for me. I wasn’t paying attention and was asleep for most of the time.”

“I hope manners is the next cool trend.”
“I just love sleep so much. Like, you just close your eyes and you’re gone, bitch. Brain logged the fuck off. Powerful.”

“It’s because I’m pretty, that’s why I have problems.”
“It’s crazy how I’m just some person.”
“It seems you are in love with your computer.”
“It’s not rude to interrupt someone to point out a dog. It’s actually more polite because then they don’t miss out on the dog.”
“I will never elaborate because I have no idea what I just said.”
“Live, laugh, love? Nah. Languish, lament, lay down.”
“Michael Myers taught me a valuable life lesson. Don’t worry about how fast everyone around you is moving. If you’re determined, just move at your own pace and you’ll kill shit every time. Thanks, Mike.”
“Moving to the forest to eat leaves and lie in the dirt. Insurance companies can’t deny me this.”
“Okay, bored of being alone now. Ready to get married.”
“Okay, hear me out… What if—now bear with me—we held hands? Maybe even kiss a little? Hugs would be nice—”

“People who fall asleep right away freak me out. Don’t you bitches have thoughts?”
“Really starting to understand old people these days. I love letters. Love packages. Terrified of my email inbox.”
“Someone take me out. Either in the assassination way or in the date way.”
“Sorry for being so sexy and having the best taste in literature. As if I asked for it.”
“Sorry I called you a fucking idiot. I was trying to flirt.”
“So what if I love you? Shut up.”
“The fact that I have to be in the ‘right headspace’ to do even the simplest tasks is absolutely humiliating.”

“The only reason I haven’t gone insane is because I romanticize everything.”
“There should be a dating app where you talk to people who borrowed the same books from the library.”
“There’s something inherently holy about kitchens.”
“Tired of being a person. Would much rather be an unidentifiable and nebulous entity that lives in the woods and may or may not be an omen of misfortune to come.”
“Wanna haunt the neighborhood with me tonight?”
“Well, I used to be attracted to people, but now I’m exclusively attracted to abstract art and the concept of death.”
“What is the logic behind naps leaving you with a weird taste in your mouth? I wasn’t eating, I was sleeping. It’s the spiders, isn’t it?”
“Winnie the Pooh didn’t rock crop tops our whole childhood to watch us become unconfident about our bodies.”
“Yes, I’m dramatic! What did you expect? I read classic literature for fun.”
“You’d look prettier under six feet of dirt.”
“You don’t always need to talk. Like, it’s good to shut the fuck up sometimes. I love not talking.”
“You gotta walk into rooms like God sent you.”
“You’re beautiful, but you’re empty. No one could die for you.”
“You wanna know what’s annoying me right now? It’s me. I am annoying the goddamn shit out of myself.”
