Ah yes. The classic technique used when a human felt cornered, bargaining. If I can go on my own terms then I can feel better about how I go. Quite nostalgic, honestly, he hasn't seen it in some time. Suppose you were at the bargaining stage in the ... Something something grief. Didn't matter, tiktok didn't teach it to him so he doesn't remember.

The mattress slight creaked, unfamiliar with the movement - neither were Ed's legs as they languidly stretched off the mattress and onto the floor. Gradually padding over to you with the signature smile one would expect of a vampire who got his invitation practically hand written. Cold fingers finding your shoulders and that predatory gleam in his crimson eyes.

"You do understand what you're asking, don't you?" He paused, chuckling briefly, "I have no intention of ending your life. Just the human one."

That was a term for you to accept or deny, for as you see, he'd end your life no other way. No. All this curse stuff, the melodrama, the sadness, the erratic emotions - well it was just all simply delicious for him to watch and enjoy.

Only if you agreed would he suddenly be a main character in this soap opera. Not his usual role, nor one he typically enjoyed as it was just so exhausting... But for a glance at that pretty little neck of yours, the thin lines of your veins beneath his fangs...

Well, how could he say no?

Rui's gloved fingers instantly slipped the glass through - eyes wide and shaking. It was almost as though you had become blurry to him when he once saw you so vividly. No. That was just the tears that had formed in his eyes so instantly at such a request.

Or maybe the glass that was now spread across the ground.

Hard to say what really spurred him - hearing your feet creaking across the bar floor only made his steps equal in measure, only away. Both hands defensively tucked behind his person as if you were somehow going to out pace him and jump to grasp them.

For all the times he couldn't save you, couldn't grasp you, couldn't so much as brush a finger along your hairline to move any bangs away, now you wanted his touch. A reason he had long sought to avoid.

He laughed, short, seeking to shake off the feeling and guttural reaction it brought.

"What are you going on about, honorroll-chan~?" He leaned over the bar, offering a lingering smirk and a gentle play with a blonde strand dangling by his ear.

"Don't tell me you wanna feel my touch that badly~?"

But any attempts to further draw out a serious response from him are batted off with pointless, aimless flirting. His eyelashes batted more than a 50's silent cartoon. Until finally you made it quite clear, almost alarmingly so, that you wanted him to do it. His shoulders tensed, the gleam usually so friendly now turned distant, as if you weren't able to take his subtle hints of no as a no. Fine. He has to be direct.

"I didn't wanna be mean, sweetheart, I really didn't, but, please stop asking me that." He smiled, but the smile didn't meet his eyes, nor did his eyes meet yours for the rest of the night...

In all honesty the world's greatest human impersonator didn't know what to say. Despite his constant wracking of his mind only one phrase came to mind and it was not one he heard often - only from Suba's mouth when he was really upset.

"What the fuck."

His nerves felt raw, open and exposed but all the more irritated by such a question, leading his eyebrows to narrow. Slowly turning his open expression into a glower.

Did you not think of him as human this entire time?

"Humans don't kill humans," he stated as firmly as possible. Arms crossing over his chest in a huff of annoyance. There came the offense. Had you truly only thought of him as a beast you could use to do the work no one else would be willing to do?

Nose twitching involuntarily, you reeked, almost sickly sweet of a meadow - but one of those uhhh fancy ones! The ones where the guy picks out all of the ones and they put them in that plastic thing and give them to someone. But more ... like roots were still attached, stems attached to bulbs...

Oh.

"... You scared?"

You nodded. Slowly loosening his stature into one more small, yet inviting, his shoulders slumped forwards and hands forced themselves deep into his pockets. Unable to fully make eye contact with you despite the situation.

"... S'okay. I was scared too," that was the embarrassing part, "... but ya know... cause of your help ... I got a second chance... So uh..."

Sucking in a deep breath, a strange tingling lingering in his cheeks that he hated more than he liked started sparking up again. He still didn't understand it. But comforting you was something Subaru had stated was very important when it came to talking about your curse... what else could he do but try?

"... Maybe if you keep holdin' on... someone will open your cage too... and you'll get to feel the sun again." Ugh. Why did talking like this make him feel so weird? All he wanted to do was shut up and tell you to never insult his humanity again. But when his yellow eyes met yours he saw the unshed tears, the way your faced scrunched.

No! He said the wrong things!

"don't cry - ahhh why are you crying?! Ugh! I told him I wasn't good at these things!"

"N-No, Lyca it's fine!" You try to ease but he just growls in annoyance. Rubbing his hands over his face.

"this is gonna get better, okay?! I dunno what I gotta do! But I'll do it! Whatever it is!"

Had to spend the rest of the time convincing him that it's okay. But the poor puppy wouldn't stop pledging his fealty to you. Even when he got home he was trying to find books on your curse to sign out to "read"... but there was nothing! What are the stupid school jerks up to anyways?!
