Farm-to-Table Dinner at Forage!
We are thrilled to announce our FIRST farm-to-table dinner in collaboration with Chef Eric Cooper, bartender Joe Choiniere, and the rest of the exceptional crew at our favorite Cambridge restaurant, Forage. We’ll do the harvesting, they’ll do the mixing, shaking, slicing, and dicing, and all you’ll have to do is luxuriate in the pure magic offered up before you. This meal will be paired delectably with four wines, though we know from experience that the non-alcoholic drinks dreamed up at Joe’s bar are just as imaginative as the hard ones. Book your table today and we’ll look forward to seeing you soon!

Baby plant challenge 🌱 Another beloved friend is coming back! In summer this beauty becomes a nursery for a plethora of bugs, most notably a beloved creatureb that migrates north from their winter home in the oyamel fir trees of Mexico. The leaves grant the insect the superpower of toxicity, turning an otherwise defenseless caterpillar into a six-legged eating machine that predators stay away from to avoid a nasty bellyache. Any guesses on the identity of this botanical superstar? #plantid #plantquiz #babyplant #wildflowers #plantnerd (at Boston, Massachusetts)

valentine's pop-up market!
We are delighted to be joining one of our favorite farmer's markets for this cozy event! Along with our cocktail blends, salves, steams, and other goodies we will have hot tea on tap and will also be selling Apotheker's Kitchen's honey-sweetened chocolates. From the market staff:
Our first of three pop-up farmer's markets is next weekend! February, 11, 10-1pm at Windsor at Oak Grove in Melrose, 12 Island Hill Ave. The market will take place in their clubhouse and media rooms. We'll have Oakdale Farm bringing apples, beets and other winter herbs and vegetables. Other amazing food vendors are The Bread Shop, Aaronap Cellars, Pure Pastry, Muddy River Herbals, Laszlo Family Farm, Seven Hills Pasta Co., Roberto's Seafood, Foxboro Cheese, Shady Pine Farm, Mr. Tamole, La Qchara, Jitter's Cafe.
These fantastic artisans, crafters and personal care products: EPOCA, Sweet as JAM, Brooklyn James, Greek Girl Soap, Sasquatch Woodworks, Castle Corner Creations, and Clothes For A Cause Inc (where you can buy your 02176 knitted hats to support Housing Families).
City Compost will be joining us to speak with people about their composting services. We have encouraged all of our vendors to be set up to take credit/debit and cash. We are piloting with using market bucks for our SNAP shoppers only. But our vendors will still accept market bucks that you may still have in your wallet!
PARKING Parking will be tricky-but we recommend looking for spots on the periphery of Windsor at Oak Grove-at Pine Banks, along Main Street, Banks Place and we got the okay to park on the Melrose YMCA Daycare side of the lot-both front and back (not in front of Hunts photo).
Our second pop-up market is in partnership with the Melrose Family YMCA on March 24th, 1-4pm in their gymnasium. We are so lucky to have these generous partners so we can continue to bring sustainable produce and healthy products to the community over the winter months.
We are also excited to be bringing you a mini-farmers' market at the Healthy Melrose Family Wellness & Fitness event on Saturday May 12, 2018 from 10 - 1:30pm. More info as we develop this exciting partnership!
As always, please BYOBag!

This story broke my heart in half. I hope you read (or listen to) it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Editor’s note: This report includes graphic and disturbing descriptions of assault.
Pauline wants to tell her story — about that night in the basement, about the boys and about the abuse she wanted to stop.
But she’s nervous. “Take a deep breath,” she says out loud to herself. She takes a deep and audible breath. And then she tells the story of what happened on the night that turned her life upside down.
“The two boys took advantage of me,” she begins. “I didn’t like it at all.”
Pauline is a woman with an intellectual disability. At a time when more women are speaking up about sexual assault — and naming the men who assault or harass them — Pauline, too, wants her story told.
Her story, NPR found in a yearlong investigation, is a common one for people with intellectual disabilities.
NPR obtained unpublished Justice Department data on sex crimes. The results show that people with intellectual disabilities — women and men — are the victims of sexual assaults at rates more than seven times those for people without disabilities.
It’s one of the highest rates of sexual assault of any group in America, and it’s hardly talked about at all.
Pauline was part of that silent population. But she says she decided to speak publicly about what happened to her because she wants to “help other women.”

Herbs, including those that grow at Bird Park, can be used to make delicious medicinal drinks. With Jenny Hauf, owner of Muddy River Herbals, learn how to use delectable herbs to make infused spirits and bitters. Get a grasp on how to make classic drinks like shrubs and sodas, and different ways of sweetening drinks without white sugar, such as honey-sweetened lemonade.
This class is the second to last of a series on herbal medicine. The other classes are An Introduction to the Medicinal Herbs of New England (January 27), Creating a Beautiful, Aromatic, and Practical Herb Garden (February 10), and Your Own Herbal Apothecary (February 24).

Payment accepted on the day of program, if space available. Member $15; Nonmember $25.
