Hii, fellow asexual here! If you are not uncomfortable talking about it, I have a few questions. How did you figure out that you are one? Was it like something very obvious that made you realize or just little things started making sense? Because as a virgin, never having been in a relationship, there's always this doubt in the back of my mind that I might not even be asexual, even though I'm convinced I am =)) this is one messy ask, hope you're having a good day!^^

I’m so sorry for the super late response, I actually just got home today from visiting family (for the first time in two years!). I’d love to answer your questions! Discovering your sexuality is quite a journey and isn’t always clear-cut. Being asexual is something I’m still trying to come to terms with myself. Sometimes I’ll think “what if it’s just my medication killing my sex drive?” Or “maybe I just haven’t met the right person”.

Before I get started though I think it’s important to note that being asexual (lacking sexual attraction) and aromantic (lacking romantic attraction) are two different things! You can be an aromantic asexual, just asexual or just aromantic. I am just an asexual - I am attracted to people and want to date, but I am not interested in having sex with anyone, regardless of my romantic feelings for them. Also, a quick little disclaimer that asexuality can be defined, displayed and handled in many different ways - I am just sharing my personal experience and answering your questions based on said experiences!

For me it started with a lot of little things at first. I don’t enjoy kissing, holding hands, or cuddling (these are not necessarily signs of being asexual, they were just an indicator for me). I have never looked at someone and been turned on by them or their actions. I think people are attractive, but I’ve never wanted someone to have sex with me. Honestly, most physical affection freaks me out and makes me incredibly uncomfortable. The thought of having intercourse with another human just instantly makes me cringe for lots of reasons.

Over two years ago I started dating a guy who had a very very high sex drive. I had known him since second grade and had a huge crush on him for about 10 years. At the time, I hadn’t identified as asexual. He always wanted to get physically intimate with me every time we hung out. I was a virgin so I figured I was just being a chicken about it and would give it a shot. We touched each other and started doing the things that lead up to sex but that was when I knew I was not capable of being sexually attracted to anyone. Throughout the whole thing I was incredibly uncomfortable and I didn’t get turned on at all. We ended up not having sex because I told him I wasn’t ready. Afterwards, I sat there and couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. Here I am, I finally have the guy I’ve wanted since elementary school and I kill the mood? Good one, J! I guess you could say that was my big reveal! To this day I am still a virgin (penetrative), have only full-on made out once (it grossed me out), and don’t like most forms of physical intimacy.

After that I explored the possibility of being asexual. I researched quite a bit and felt like everything I was reading perfectly described me and my perspective on sex. Realizing I was asexual was not an overnight process, it took me about 6 months to finally recognize that I am ace. I tried to rush to a conclusion and ended up in a confused limbo for months because of it. One weird misconception I found during my research is that all asexuals don’t like masturbating. Some do and some don’t! I enjoy it, but that doesn’t make me any less or more of an asexual as someone who doesn’t.

All that being said, I do not feel that I am “stuck” with my sexuality. If I get older and decide to have sex or find myself attracted to someone in that way, that’s okay! And the same goes for you! You may identify one way now and then a couple of years down the road realize that hey, maybe my sexual orientation changed, which is totally fine!

I apologize for the length of my answer, I just didn’t want to miss anything! I encourage you to take your time and don’t feel rushed to identify yourself. That was something I wish someone had told me before I started exploring the possibilities of being asexual. I hope this at least somewhat answered your questions!
