Final Reflection
My experience in Multimodal Writing and Digital Literacy has been nothing short of informative, fun, and exciting. I learned new ways to display and present information on a topic that I am extremely passionate about. Streetlight has been a big part of my life since I have entered college and I’ve always wanted to tell my story as a part of the organization. This class gave me an outlet to tell my story in very unique forms. Starting with the zine, I was able to do a different take on the traditional Streetlight pamphlet that currently exists while also adding a QR code so readers could learn more about the wonderful things we do. My favorite assignment was definitely the video. Collaborating with my classmates and helping them share their organizations that they are passionate about was an enriching experience. Additionally, I had always wanted to make and edit a video, and this class pushed me to do so while teaching me about different aspects of the video making process. Our activity with the green screen was the most fun I had in the class. I have had a passion for sports and have always wanted to venture into creating sports videos where I discuss highlights from past sporting events. Not only did the green screen activity help me accomplish this, but it also showed me the resources that are available at UF to help me continue this endeavor should I choose to do so in the future. The HTML video was quite a cool experience as well. As a someone who wants to go into the medical field, I want to be at the forefront of innovation and excellence in that field. Learning even the basics of code and creating websites is a great start towards becoming comfortable with coding and participating in its use in medicine.
Going into this class, I told myself it would be quite easy and interesting. The class definitely ended up challenging me more than I thought, which was good! I was able to work on making sure I didn’t fall to behind on assignments which in turn helped me better my work ethic. The e-portfolio I put together at the end of class was a culmination of my hard work. I was quite proud of the work I completed and made small changes in my past assignments at the end to create an end product that flowed well and portrayed what I had learned from the class throughout the semester. I believe the e-portfolio showed my progression and mastery of learning the material taught in the course. Moreover, each project in my portfolio, in chronological order, showed my increasing comfort with the software and websites we learned about throughout the course. I would definitely recommend this course to my friends at UF and am overall very happy I got to meet my fellow classmates and awesome teacher! Thank you Emily!

ePortfolio Blog Post
The readings on ePortfolios highlighted the brief yet thoughtful purposes they serve. They’re intended to be a rich profusion of your hard work with accompanying reflections on how you created your work, and how you feel about it. I really liked the “museum” analogy because that’s what it is just on a computer screen. Rather than walking around an exhibit, you’re scrolling through and clicking on artifacts with detailed descriptions within. My ePortfolio will showcase all of the work and content created for my Magic Project which includes my zine, podcast, video and HTML. I’m definitely going to take into consideration how to make it accessible to everybody.
What will your ePortfolio include? Any favorite pieces?
How will you use the tools learned from this course and from this assignment after it’s (the course) over?

I learned that an e-portfolio not only is a good way to showcase your work, but also a good way to reflect and perfect your old works while you are creating the portfolio.
I was able to watch my progression in skill as we traversed through different forms of media. I also was able to edit and perfect my work.

E-Portfolio Blog Post
The E-portfolio readings offered a lot of background on the reason for e-portfolios and what exactly makes them important. It is essential in the real world to be able to showcase your work in a neat and organized way. The irony of an e-portfolio is that it isn’t the easiest to put together, meaning you are working to put together a display of all of your work. My e-portfolio showed my ability to complete four different course objectives through different assignments. Each assignment was followed by a brief explanation of the deliverables and how I was able to complete them. I organized my e-portolio to be easily navigable as well as easily understandable.
What did you learn from the reading?
How did you reflect on the assignments you put in your e-portfolio?

E-Portfolio Blog Post
The e-portfolio articles gave me helpful tips on how to create my own e-portfolio. Additionally, it taught me the necessity of creating an e-portfolio and the process of describing it and yourself in the introductory essay. I used the elements discussed to include more revision and reflection into my e-portfolio. I also began to understand that when making an e-portfolio, you are reviewing what you have created so far. As I created mine for this class, I realized that my e-portfolio was a good way to go back to my old creations and tweak them to create a great overall product.
Discussion Questions:
Are you happy with your final e-portfolio product?
Did you use any tips or helpful information in these article to help create your e-portfolio?

Social Media and Accessibility Blog Post
I found the reading from the University of Minnesota about accessibility on social media particularly interesting. Having read about web accessibility in this class and in others, there’s a huge focus on making sure professional coders are creating web pages and apps that are accessible. This reading shows the end user how you can make your own social media pages more accessible without having to learn even one line of code. It sheds light on the really easy things we could do as users rather than developers to make sure everyone can enjoy our content.
I also enjoyed the reading on classroom activities involving social media. Media literacy is incredibly important in an era where we’re deciphering new information constantly. I think these classroom activities can teach kids about media literacy early on as well as encourage them to think critically while using social media.
If you were a high school teacher, would you use any of these activities in your classroom? If so, which one?
Are you open to making small changes in the way you post on social media to make your own content more accessible?

Social Media Blog Post
The social media readings opened my eyes to the use of social media in an academia setting and how we as users of social media can make simple changes to keep our content accessible to everyone. The description of different activities in the kairos article allowed for readers to get an idea of the different aspects of hidden rhetoric that can often be layered into a person’s tweet or post. Additionally, the activities proposed in that article are each directed towards the different aspects of social media. While one focused directly on individual posts, another focused on comparing different social media sites as a whole. The UMN article gave tips that are easy to follow in order to help those with disabilities read my social media content.
Discussion Questions:
Before these articles, have you ever thought of making your social media more accessible to those with disabilities?
Do you think people often don’t consider social media content to be a type of literature?

Transcript:
Alex: Hello everyone, my name is Alex Twist and today I’m going talk about my magic project for our multimodal writing class. So for our projects, we were supposed to choose a volunteer association or something to bring magic to people’s lives. But I wanted to do something that brought magic to animal’s lives, so I decided to do The Humane Society of North Central Florida.
The Humane Society was formed in 2018 by the Alachua County Humane Society, Gainesville Pet Rescue, and the Helping Hands Pet Rescue. They were all three separate pet rescues at the time but they ended up merging and joining forces to allocate their resources better and help out Alachua County the most efficient way possible. So their mission statement here on their website says they want to “eliminate the use of euthanasia” which is what they use to put down pets. They are a strictly no kill shelter which is one of the reasons I wanted to get involved with them. None of the animals that are passing through there are going to die. They are either going to be transferred to a foster home or they’ll be adopted.
So what do they do? Like I said they are a pet shelter, they shelter animals for adoption like cats, dogs, rabbits, and other small animals. They’re also a pet clinic; they can spay or neuter your animals. And also, if you’re a pet owner they can also microchip your cat or dog, and that’s huge. I think every pet should be micro chipped just in case it runs away, so you can find it again.
So why do they need our help? They’re a nonprofit organization, they only run on donations and the efforts of their volunteers. So that’s how we can help, they need all the volunteers they can get to sustain being a no kill shelter. As far as I know they do not have an age requirement (to volunteer), but if you are under the age of 16 you have to be accompanied by an adult. Another way you can help is by donating. They have a donation page on their website that you can go find. They also have their very own thrift store around the campus. That’s located on 4205 NW 6th st, Gainesville. At this thrift store they sell things like pet supplies, so doggy bowls, leashes, collars, and stuff like that. The last way you can help is by adopting. If you’re in college, first of all I don’t suggest you get an animal here, there’s too many responsibilities for a college student to be taking care of an animal. But, if you do want one, I highly suggest that you rescue a dog instead of taking one from a breeder. There’s nothing wrong with either but a lot of these dogs have never had a caretaker before, they’re really neglected and I think they could use your help more than, you know, a breeder’s dog would. So, if you’re gonna adopt I highly suggest you do it from here.
Lastly, I wanted to get into my experience of helping here, how I got involved, and what are the kinds of things we do at the Humane society. So, I got involved through my sister. My parents and her kind of, when I was a freshman here, wanted me to get involved with volunteers or clubs. They didn’t want me just sitting in my dorm all day doing nothing, playing video games. So (breathes in), I decided to look around, (Pause) and I realized how much I missed my dog when I was up here. And the only way to kind of fill that void was to get involved with the Humane Society, and the best thing was that my sister was already involved at the time, and you know, she put in a good word about it to me. I ended up texting her and telling her “the next time you go I’ll come with you and see what its like.” From then on, I kept going back, it was great. Helping the animals definitely brought magic to my life as well as theirs. Many of the animals, like I said, were abused, neglected, or just never had a caretaker. So, this was a great way to give back to the animals and at the same time give back to me, because I had to fill that void that was left by my dog when I’m up here. You know, I have no animals to socialize with, but that about it. That’s my magic project, The Humane Society of North Central Florida. Thank you all for listening, and goodbye.

[BLOG POST] Reflection
For this assignment, please reflect on this course. This is a lengthy (400+ words) post, so I have provided several questions as generative prompts for critical reflection. Feel free to add images, GIFs, or other multimedia content to support your reflections.
What did I learn from this class? What did I learn about drafting and revising? What did I learn about making my writing public? What skills did I learn or refine? What strengths did I rely on? What did I find most challenging about Multimodal Writing/Digital Literacy? What opportunities for growth did I identify that I could continue improving beyond this semester? What was I expecting from this class and how did this class meet or subvert my expectations? What did I learn in the process of activities like the annotated playlist, the paper circuit, or the green screen activity? What was most memorable or interesting from the class readings? What was my favorite project and why? What did I take away from the course? What resources have I gained? Are there any projects I started that I want to expand on? Have my ideas of writing, humanities, academia changed as a result of this class, and if so, in what way?

This is just a music video I watched last week. Figured I’d share it since it’s filmed using stop motion. Be aware, it’s graphic and explicit

PODCAST TRANSCRIPTION:
NOAH: What’s going on everybody? My name is Noah Davalos. I’m a journalism major at the University of Florida (UF). I am currently in my fourth year, which is actually (pauses) my (pauses)  second year. I transferred over from Miami Dade College for my Associates, and now I’m in my second year for my Bachelor’s in Journalism. (breathes in) Anyway, that’s not the main topic today. Today I’m going to be talking to you guys about GRACE Marketplace……
Over the past couple of months or so, I’ve been in, y’know, GRACE Marketplace. I didn’t know much about it up until I got put into The Fine Print (breathes in) which is an independent quarterly. It’s student-ran but it’s not associated with UF and our editor-in-chief created a pitch (a story idea) and I had to take photos for it. On top of that, one of my friends in my photojournalism class, was doing a story on Dignity Village, which is a fence away from GRACE. So, yeah, after that I just started volunteering, kinda got a feel for what the place is like and it’s it’s...breathtaking to say the least. GRACE Marketplace is a one-stop homeless resource center. They serve Gainesville and Alachua County. Basically they provide anybody experiencing risk of homelessness or are homeless with shelter, housing, showers, some meals, storage, y’know, training for jobs if they need some help with that. Overall mental health aid. They have just about everything there if you’re going through it or you’re (dramatic pause) about to go through it….. And as for volunteers, anybody can go ahead and either call or apply online and you can serve a meal, talk to the people there, talk to the “homeless” people there, y’know, just kind of hear the experiences that they’ve gone through. With me, I was very humbled by the times that I’ve been there and the times that I’ve, y’know, just sat there and just listened to what they’ve had to say, listened to the stories they shared, listen to how long they’ve been at GRACE Marketplace, and it’s shaking. I could be in ten times (10x) worse position than I am right now. I can literally walk from here to school and I’ll have maybe even one or two surprisingly, one or two students that go to UF that are suffering from homelessness. I had somebody the other day ask me if I could help them with food or anything and I’m like “man, I really want to help you, but there’s this place called GRACE Marketplace and they will give you anything you need, yeah, sure it’s a bit of a drive away, it’s a bus ride away, but it’s one of the best resource centers  available to help you if you’re experiencing homelessness.” I’m just overall glad I could’ve been a part of the help ...So that’s my experience. Now you’re going to hear from Laura Botero. She is also a photojournalism major at UF, she’s in my photojournalism class and she was the one that introduced me to GRACE Marketplace. She did a story on Dignity Village for WUFT. I don’t know if you guys know this or not, but Dignity Village will be closing by the end of this year (2019) which forces people living there to either apply for housing at GRACE or find shelter elsewhere, unfortunately. So, here’s Laura…
LAURA: Hi (blushes), my name is Laura and the first time I heard about Dignity (background laughter) Village was when I was writing a story for my class and I met a lot of people from all different types of ages and the stories that I heard from them were definitely hard to hear. Some people would “tell me how they lost their jobs”, “they had to become homeless” or that “they had gone to prison for some time and the programs for them to transition back into regular lives isn’t as easy” so they had to go back to being homeless. Recently, October 1st, they implemented a rule where “no new people can go and move into Dignity Village” and they plan on officially  closing it at the start of the new year. So when I was talking to people about it, they were telling me that they pretty much “don’t know where they’re going to go next.” It’s a little bit frightening to hear because I don’t really know what the city or the county plans on doing with them and I hope that they do work something out for them. A lot of them (homeless people) don’t have a backup plan. GRACE Marketplace said to be an option to apply but it may take weeks for them  to hear back and they may not get accepted. It’s a little sad to see that. (inaudible) They don’t plan to lose their jobs or anything and they end up homeless because of that. Everything is up in the air and they don’t know what they’re going to do next…..(fades out)
NOAH: Quick shoutout to Laura for giving us two minutes of her time. Anyway guys, that’s all I have for you today. If you have any questions, feel free to message me on my Instagram (@noahdavalos), twitter (@davalosnoah), and my email ([email protected]). I’ll do my best to get back to you and yeah, have a good one guys, take care.
