tsuki’s glasses getting irreparably cracked in the middle of 2nd year so he’s wearing his old contacts (from middle school) for a few days til he has the time to go get new ones
and kags having a gay crisis every day cuz he’s suddenly realizing how pretty tsuki’s eyes are
tsuki completely clueless cuz kags is suddenly avoiding him and can’t stand to look at him so he thinks he pissed kags off somehow (he always does but this must be more than usual) so he’s asking yachi and hinata abt it
hinata and yachi looking at eo like ‘kags must’ve realized his feelings’ but neither of them are gonna tell tsuki that, so yachi says he has trouble with change so when tsuki gets new glasses it’ll be fine
well the next week tsuki comes back with new glasses that are basically exactly the same as his old ones (the frames are slightly thinner and more square but it’s such a minor difference you’d have to be staring at him to tell) and kags is not fine
now that kags has seen pretty tsuki he can’t unsee it , he’s still avoiding tsuki and hinata and yachi can’t explain it and tsuki’s losing his mind a little bit
even when tsuki tries to annoy kags and get a rise out of him, as soon as kags looks at tsuki he turns away like the sight of tsuki is burning his eyes
tsuki is all grumpy and confused until he’s studying in the classroom with yachi during lunch and she expresses similar confusion abt yamaguchi
tsuki thinks ‘well yea he likes you so ofc he’s all awkward abt it’ but he can’t say that to yachi, he knows yamaguchi has to
yachi kind of :/ and she asks how she’s supposed to go over plays with the team if yamaguchi can’t stand her
and tsuki says smth similar abt not being able to practice blocks against hinata cuz they don’t have anyone to set for them
there’s silence between the two of them for abt ten seconds before it clicks
yachi’s eyes r wide as saucers and tsuki’s head is reeling
she whispers “he doesn’t, he would’ve said” and tsuki responds with a flat “he does and he’s chicken”
yachi is facedown on tsuki’s desk, he’s too distracted by his own problems to complain abt her crumpling his science notes
“but the king would’ve said something, he’s too blunt not to”
yachi gets up from tsuki’s notes w/ a quiet huff “i don’t think he realizes his feelings”
“so i’m just sposed to let him avoid me til he figures it out? we’ll all die of old age”
yachi snorts. “that’s mean.”
“he’s stupid.”
“but you like him too.”
“wha-? i do not!”
“tsukki your ears have been bright red since u figured it out.”
tsuki covers his ears with his headphones. “as if u don’t like yamaguchi.”
yachi sticks her tongue out at him. “at least id admit it!” she covers her face with her hands. “but i can’t even tell him. he runs away from me all the time!”
tsuki shrugs. “i can tell him for you.”
“what? you-? huh?”
tsuki shrugs again. “you figured it out yourself so i may as well help.”
yachi thinks for a sec. “…and i could help you with kageyama.”
tsuki looks offended. “i don’t need help i don’t like him!”
yachis unimpressed. “what abt practice?”
tsuki crosses his arms and pouts, slumping down in his chair, but he doesn’t say anything.
yachi grins and extends a hand out to him. “do we have a deal?”
tsuki closes his eyes and takes a breath between his teeth like he’s in pain. he takes her hand. “deal.”

five minutes
Tsukishima walks into his favorite cafe, praying to whatever gods are out there that it's as quiet as usual. A woman looks him up and down as she leaves and he takes some joy in the fact that his glare makes her leave faster.
"The usual?" Yachi asks, a bear claw and a fruit tart already on a plate in front of her.
He feels some tension leave his shoulders. "I love you, you know that?"
She laughs. "Of course. Drink?"
He shakes his head no. "Saving money," he says as he pulls his credit card out.
"And you came here anyway?"
Tsukishima sticks his tongue out at her.
Yachi rolls her eyes. "No senior discount then?"
"Am I too old for the student one?" he asks with a smile, a wobbly, crackling thing that should buckle under the stress of exams.
She puts her hands up in mock surrender. "If you want the worse discount, you can have it."
"No, no, I'm old."
Kageyama bursts through the kitchen door behind her with a tray balanced on one hand.
She stops him with a tap on the arm, and stretches up to put the coffee on the nearly full tray.
He takes a second to lower it for her, glancing at Tsukishima in the meantime.
Tsukishima glares back, but it doesn't do anything. He knew it wouldn't. Kageyama has never withered under his gaze, its part of why he's Tsukishima's least favorite part of his favorite cafe. He could've sworn Kageyama wasn't working today. Maybe he should've gotten campus coffee instead.
"Sorry for the wait," Yachi says as she slides the card back across the counter.
"It's fine," Tsukishima practically snarls, taking his card with a bit more force than necessary.
He only realizes he forgot to take the desserts when he's already sat down and taken all his books out. He looks longingly at the counter, so far away from him now, for a few moments before a ping from his laptop distracts him.
Kuroo: well??
Tsukishima: im not spying on them
Kuroo: >:(
Kuroo: we sent them to that cafe on purpose!
Tsukishima: you said yourself bokuto seems nice
Tsukishima: im sure akaashi will be fine
Kuroo: you promise no heartbreak?
Tsukishima: shouldn't you be more worried about kenma's heart?
Kuroo: shut up
Tsukishima: no <3
Tsukishima: hows ring shopping?
Kuroo: its going AMAZING tyvm
Tsukishima: so you figured out his ring size?
Kuroo: DONT DISTRACT ME!!
Kuroo: hows akaashi?
Tsukishima sighs, sliding his laptop away from him at the same moment that Kageyama takes the seat across from him. Tsukishima glares ineffectually.
"So you don't want this?" Kageyama asks, showing Tsukishima what's in his hand.
Tsukishima rolls his eyes. "Put the plate down and leave."
His laptop pings.
"The building?" Kageyama asks, tilting his head slightly, the picture of innocence.
"My sight," Tsukishima snips.
Another ping. Tsukishima frowns at the red notification. It seems to glow extra brightly as he leans back to peer around the counter at Akaashi. The back of his head doesn't look heartbroken.
Tsukishima types 'He looks fine' and sends it to Kuroo at the same time that Kageyama says "Spying is rude, y'know."
"I will give you actual money if you shut up and get away from me."
Kageyama looks contemplative. "How much?"
Tsukishima must be sleep deprived because he actually slaps a 1000 yen note on the table.
Kageyama barks out a laugh, takes the note and, thankfully, disappears.
Only to reappear a few minutes later with a drink.
"I thought I paid you off," Tsukishima grumbles, avoiding eye contact by flipping through his notes.
"You bought five minutes."
"Expensive," Tsukishima says drily, finally looking up as Kageyama takes his seat.
Kageyama shrugs. "But I bring gifts," he says as he slides the drink towards Tsukishima. "On the house."
Tsukishima nods. "Mhm, so I didn't pay for this?" He takes a sip and barely holds back a hum. Leave it to Kageyama to know his favorite drink.
Kageyama grins. "Maybe you did."
Tsukishima drinks quickly, and that doesn't escape Kageyama's notice. He may be staring at a biology textbook but he can feel Kageyama's eyes on him.
"Did I make it right?"
Tsukishima nearly drops the coffee. "You made this?"
"Who else would?"
Tsukishima scowls. "Yachi."
"She was busy."
"There's no one else here."
"What about the guy you're spying on?"
Tsukishima nearly spits coffee all over the table.
"He's having a great time. You might wanna give up on him." Kageyama has the decency to frown.
Tsukishima actually does spit coffee on the table. It misses his laptop but his biology notes aren't as lucky. "Fuck you."
"Yachi's busy talking to them," Kageyama responds, using Tsukishima's fork to cut into the tart. "That guy your guy is with, he's a real talker."
"I didn't say you could have that."
"I didn't say I was having it." Kageyama mimics Tsukishima's tone perfectly, not that Tsukishima would admit that. He spears a chunk of the tart on the end of the fork and presses it to Tsukishima's lips.
"You're-" Tsukishima nearly chokes on a peach.
"There." The fork clatters against the plate. "You can finish the rest on your own, can't you?"
"You're the worst," Tsukishima manages to say, not nearly as vicious as he'd been before. A sore throat does that to you.
"Drink up," Kageyama says as he stands up, still smiling but it doesn't look the same as it had a few minutes ago.
He's about to leave the table when Tsukishima grabs his wrist. "What?"
Tsukishima blinks up at him, like he's not sure what just happened. "Sorry," he mumbles as he lets go.
Kageyama takes another step, but a barely there "Thanks," stops him in his tracks.
"What?"
Tsukishima clears his throat. "Thanks," he lifts his cup slightly, "For the drink. And, uh, that guy isn't 'My guy'." He isn't sure why he's saying this, and to Kageyama of all people. "I don't, I don't have a guy."
Something unreadable crosses Kageyama's face so quickly Tsukishima isn't sure whether he imagined it or not. It gets replaced with a smile before Tsukishima can identify it. At least this smile looks more real than the last one.
"Alright." He turns away slightly, but that doesn't keep him from talking. "You should finish up. It's getting late. We close soon."
"You do?"
"Yup." Kageyama turns on his heel. "Do I need to feed you to get you outta here?"
Tsukishima's face heats up. "No!" he nearly shouts. He pauses, fingers pressed into the table as he calms down enough to speak normally. "No, I just, I thought you were open 'til nine."
"Eight. Yachi's closing today." And he leaves before Tsukishima can ask anything else.
'What? WHAT?' Tsukishima groans, falling face down into his coffee stained notebook.
And there it is, the real reason he hates Kageyama. How is Kei supposed to focus on anything but Tobio when he's around?
Tsukishima comes to the counter at 7:55 with an empty mug and a dirty plate.
"Thanks?" Yachi says. "Since when do you clean up after yourself?"
Tsukishima scoffs. "Always."
Yachi snorts. "Not during exams."
He opens his mouth to respond, but he closes it without saying anything. Yea, he's been kind of frazzled for the past couple of days. He doesn't remember cleaning, but he doesn't remember not cleaning either.
"-shima. Earth to Tsukishima! Hello?" Kageyama has materialized in front of him.
"Where's Yachi?"
"She left."
"What?"
"We closed half an hour ago. She left."
Tsukishima might throw up.
"Are you okay?" Kageyama asks.
Tsukishima ignores Kageyama's question to ask one of his own. "Have you been staying open late?"
Kageyama turns pink.
"Have you been staying open late for me?"
He says something too softly for Tsukishima to hear. "…distracted…quiet."
"Huh?"
"You always seem distracted by the noise, so I wanted you to have an hour of peace and quiet," Kageyama says without looking at him, just loud enough to be heard. He walks away to stack chairs.
Tsukishima stands there, stupefied. 'That's why this place is so peaceful,' his brain helpfully supplies as his heart speeds up to a dangerous pace. He really wants to thank Kageyama.
Instead, when Kageyama comes back to the counter, Tsukishima calls him stupid.
"You shouldn't stay open late."
"My boss doesn't care."
"What about your time?"
"I usually clean around you while you work." He looks up from the register then, his warm gaze burning through Tsukishima in a way it shouldn't. "It's not a problem, really." He leans across the counter and lowers his voice, forcing Tsukishima to lean in to hear him. "But I'm basically done here now, so here's the deal." He pulls a 1000 yen note out of his pocket. "You can have this if you shut up and get away from me."
Tsukishima takes the bill from his hands in a sort of tired silence. Kageyama ends up watching him pack his stuff up and only turns to the kitchen when he hears the bell chime and the door slam.
He hangs up his apron and fights with the tiny shoe rack until it finally spits his boots out. It's a slow walk to the door as he zips up his jacket and slips his gloves on.
The bell chimes again as he leaves and he nearly jumps out of his skin when he hears Tsukishima's voice.
"Took you long enough."
"You didn't go home?"
"Did you want me to?"
Ignoring the softness in Tsukishima's voice and the way it makes him feel, Kageyama keeps walking. "I thought I paid you to get away from me."
Tsukishima falls into step next to him and takes his hand. "You bought five minutes."
