A list of interesting canon details from sources other than the movie
I’m the kind of person who tends to obsess over small details on things I like, and with some of my fandoms I make an effort to seek out every tiny detail I can, whether it’s something the writers said, something found in a book, etc. And Coco is one of the fandoms I do this for!
Since not everyone likes to dig for details themselves and some people don’t even have access to all the different parts of canon, I figured I’d compile a (non-exhaustive) list of neat details that come from various canon sources. I’ll follow each of these up with the source.
Here we go!
Héctor’s favorite food is chapulines (Book: A Surprise for Héctor)
Post-movie, Miguel uses Dante and Pepita to send letters back and forth to his dead family (Book: A Surprise for Héctor)
Héctor was born in 1900 and died in 1921, and was 21 years old when he died (Lee Unkrich’s twitter)
Imelda was born in 1899 and died sometime in her 70s (Lee Unkrich’s twitter)
Ernesto was born in 1896 (Lee Unkrich’s twitter)
Coco was born sometime between 1917-1918 and thus died when she was about 100 years old (Lee Unkrich’s twitter)
Miguel made his first guitar by repairing a broken one that a musician had thrown away (Book: Miguel and the Grand Harmony)
Coco’s favorite thing is dancing. After the music ban, she danced in secret, and only gave it up when she accidentally injured herself and frightened her daughters (Book: A Story About Music, Shoes, and Family)
The dead Riveras live in a very large house with room enough for Pepita to enter (Book: The Secret Recipe)
Héctor and Ernesto grew up together and had a close relationship like cousins or brothers (Book: A Story About Music, Shoes, and Family; Lee Unkrich’s twitter)
Héctor was murdered in Mexico City (Book: A Story about Music, Shoes, and Family)
Miguel raised Dante from when he was a puppy (Book: Friends for Life)
The name of the place where the nearly-forgotten live is Shantytown (Book: A Story About Music, Shoes, and Family; Game: Disney Magic Kingdoms)
Though Héctor no longer lives in Shantytown post-movie, he brings many of his offerings to the people there (Game: Disney Magic Kingdoms)
Héctor’s guitar was a gift from Imelda (Lee Unkrich’s twitter)
Though Imelda stopped making dance shoes after discovering Coco was dancing behind her back, she resumed making them in the afterlife, and filled orders for Ceci (Book: A Story About Music, Shoes, and Family)
Héctor’s birthday is November 30th (Gael Garcia Bernal’s twitter)
(And, while there’s no source explicitly stating this, we can logically deduce that Héctor died between Nov. 30th and Dec 31st, 1921)
(Also using logic, he was separated from his family for 96 years)
The twins died simultaneously (Lee Unkrich’s twitter)
Héctor wrote music as a child, often staying up late to work on songs (Book: Miguel and the Grand Harmony)
Héctor and Imelda perform concerts together post-movie (Book: A Surprise for Héctor)
Miguel never told most of his family about what happened on Dia de Muertos, but he made a book about it to give to Socorro when she was older (Book: I Love My Family!)
Imelda and Héctor met in Santa Cecilia when both were young (Lee Unkrich’s twitter)
Héctor has had writer’s block since his death, and only managed to start writing again post-movie (Game: Disney Magic Kingdoms)
Ernesto slept around a lot (NPR interview with Lee Unkrich)
Victoria and Rosita played around with video equipment in the arts district when they were searching for Miguel, which is why they know how to use it in the climax (Book: A Story about Music, Shoes, and Family)
Héctor used many schemes to try to cross the bridge, including dressing as an alebrije (and being caught due to leaving hand/footprints in glowing paint), dressing as Diego Rivera (and being caught because stuffing kept falling out of the holes in his clothing), and hiding himself in a raspa cart (and being caught because he was shivering so badly his bones rattling could be heard outside the cart) (Book: A Story about Music, Shoes, and Family)
The suits Héctor and Ernesto wear in the flashbacks are rusty orange (Lee Unkrich’s twitter)
Coco secretly sang to Miguel when he was a baby (Book: A Story about Music, Shoes, and Family)
Miguel’s hideaway was originally Coco’s hideaway, and she hid a lot of the twins’ failed shoe experiments there (Book: A Story about Music, Shoes, and Family)
Poco Loco was written for Imelda, but Héctor thinks of Coco when he sings it in the movie (Lee Unkrich’s twitter; Book: A Story about Music, Shoes, and Family)
I could go into more details but I need to work on other stuff right now @__@; If anyone wants to add to this list, be my guest! Just add a source for anything you add here.

OKAY SO THERE WAS ONE THING I OVERLOOKED WHEN STREAMING THE COCO VR GAME AND I NOTICED IT WHEN I WAS REWATCHING:
When in the art museum, there are various speakers that explain different parts of the art to you. At the end of the museum, you can paint your skeleton character’s face, and there’s a speaker that explains something that I completely missed…
“As you already know, here in the Land of the Dead we love our sugar skull motifs. It’s a tradition to paint our own faces with colorful patterns and designs.“
THE SKELES IN THE LOTD PAINT THEIR OWN FACES?!?!?
I know the fandom’s tossed around various theories about the facial markings–that they instantly appear as colored markings on death, and can fade when the skeles become more forgotten. But the idea of them having markings that they later paint actually makes a lot of sense??
For example, with this character here, if you look really close, you can see that he does have facial markings on his brow, forehead, and the top of his skull, but they’re not painted! And his bones are in good health–he’s certainly not forgotten.
Other skeles enhance their painted markings with jewelry!
Then you’ve got Cheech, who also very clearly has markings, but no colors on them. It would make sense that in Shantytown, they probably don’t have the paints necessary to enhance their markings with.
I know the original theory a lot of people (me included) went with was that as a skeleton grew more forgotten, they lost the colors of their facial markings, but…
…that wouldn’t make sense for Héctor, who only has one person remembering him, yet still retains some colors. It’s more likely that the skeletons use very strong paint to color their markings with, though even that will fade over time. It also makes sense that Héctor would have access to that kind of paint, since he’s friends with people in the art district!
Then of course at the end of the movie we see Héctor now has brighter facial markings… which, now that we know they’re painted, I have the mental image of Imelda repainting his markings for him. (I mean, I’m sure he could do it himself, but I don’t think he would have any qualms with Imelda doing it for him, would you?)

Found this book at the store. Has a few pics I haven’t seen before (or don’t remember seeing anyway).
Also has a short story about Imelda:

More Promise AU! Hector is oblivious and Ernesto suffers XD For more context and info on this AU go here: tomorobo-illust.tumblr.com/post/658323876165681152/see-hi-res-version
Ernesto is definitely more jaded here after going through 20+ years thinking his best friend blatantly left and never contacted him. Ironically, with Hector’s sudden disappearance, the sorrow he felt with the loss became his muse >w>;
He is still charismatic when he wants to be, but in a less boisterous and more subdued manner. He also does NOT like any of his original songs (except maybe one or two). It’s the relatable artist who hates their own work and criticize themselves, even tho they are doing pretty well and improving. It’s because he compares it too much with Hector’s style of song writing which he thought highly of and had more fun performing.

Not sure if this has been done, but Promise AU where Ernesto doesn’t kill his friend and steal his song. Unfortunately they both still end up having tragic/sudden deaths.

PSA:
Acetaminophen/paracetamol has a hard stop upper dose limit, above which it becomes extremely toxic.
That limit is 4g (8 “extra strength” (500mg) tablets) in 24 hours (about 2 tablets every 6 hours).
A single dose of 22 extra strength tablets can kill you.
Taking 12 or more tablets per day for more than a week can also kill you (this is about 3 tablets every 6 hours).
Symptoms of overdose take up to 24 hours to manifest, and are fairly difficult to distinguish from other problems. They include abdominal pain (especially right upper quadrant), nausea, malaise, and confusion.
The antidote (n-acetylcystine) must be given within 8hours of ingestion in order to be useful.
After 10 hours the only thing that will work is a liver transplant.
You might think “why would I ever accidentally take so much?”
Well, acetaminophen is in almost everything in the cold/flu/pain aisle. Migraine combos like Excedrin, cold and flu combos like NyQuil, basically anything that says “non-aspirin pain relief”, and anything that’s branded as a fever reducer. It’s all probably acetaminophen/paracetamol.
So the goal of this post is to get you to read the labels on your medications. Because taking taking Tylenol and NyQuil together for a week (like you might if you had the flu) could kill you.

PSA: AO3 HAS BEEN INFECTED WITH AI BOT COMMENTS.
Have you seen one of these dipshits? If you post regularly on ao3, chances are YES, but more likely you didn't notice nor suspect it was a bot. Sometimes they start off nice, or even praise you before getting nasty out of nowhere, like so:
But much like Grok, their newest obsession is nazism.

I don't know where they come from, or what purpose this could possibly serve other than suicidebaiting random people in the internet, I guess; but apparently they've started parroting names from real users to send these comments and shifting their general length to go by undetected. Maybe those are scrappers trying to train 'reviewbots' to be sold as part of some scam service promising to give feedback for newbie writers, who the fuck knows.
Here are more examples of the tone and backhanded compliments you can find in these:
If you regularly post on AO3 or interact with writers in it, please pass this along so they don't feel insane receiving bombs in their inbox. This is ridiculous.

characters raised to be tools
Weapons. Trained, tested, forged in steel and fire. Failure is an inevitability that ends in death. Pain should not be felt--it should be recognized, familiar, and inconsequential
Martyrs. In the form of servants and princes, of leaders and underdogs. If blood is necessary, the martyr will lift their hands and offer it all
Shields. Like tempering a sword, but only to bear and not to lash out. Wounds are medals--not symbols of pride, but symbols of worth. A pretty shield is useless; scars mean a job well done
Experiments. Raised on the cold comfort of a lab table. Restraints are only necessary when they're not in their right mind. Is it honorable, to be twisted beyond recognition? Or is it just a necessary evil?
Monsters. Cruelty, caution, and regarding one as a creature beyond reasonable thought is tempering in its own right. But if you keep a leash at the right length, perhaps the massecre won't reach you. One can hope.
Idols. Pretty face, pretty name, pretty hands around their shoulders and throat. There to seduce, manipulate, force any feeling to come to the surface and twist it to their favor. Any genuinity stays locked behind the guilded cage that surrounds their pretty little heart
Trophies. Status and wealth and the traditions that keep someone at their heels, on their knees, to display and serve and decorate one's ballroom.
Sacrifices. Drenched in honorable clothes, prepared and adored and cleansed. The gift of hope at the cost of one's life. Is it taken with no fight? How can you escape the ropes you were born in?
