it’s very silly how stannis dudebros try to make him this epitome of masculinity when in text he’s constantly described as lacking the virility his brothers possess and being shunned for it. part of why stannis nourished resentment towards renly is because he had to take over a motherly role after their parents’ death, which stannis saw (and robert too, which he’d later teach renly) as humiliating him further. i’ll even go further and say it’s a huge part of why renly doesn’t respect the succession line, in my opinion. because he sees stannis as lesser than him is a given, but the why of it is incredibly tangled to the role stannis provided him in his childhood.
it’s the implicit target of stannis’ bitterness when he says he “did his duty” in storm’s end. the underlying theme of why renly got their house’s ancient seat and stannis had to move to dragonstone. because he takes a feminine role within the fraternal dynamic of his family, a necessarily less deserving role. renly and robert form a subsystem inside their house that treats stannis like westeros treats women.
stannis’s story is also very much a gender story and i don’t think you can really get him without understanding how his relationship to being outside of westerosi masculine ideals shapes him.

imo this fandom knows or fixates on like 2-5 quotes when it concerns the characters they r not really interested in and base all of their analysis on those quotes. these quotes in isolation or decontextualized from an entire arc and pre-established complex characterization do not really work. especially if you ignore what direction (and why) was ultimately taken by the characters at the latest stage in their development. people also take quotes from the middle of an arc and take it as a conclusion rather than acknowledging how said quote was taken apart, or reinforced, or contextualised, or contradicted by the end.

The reason why the R+L=J reveal needs to be timed with the events surrounding Jon’s resurrection and subsequent dehumanization is that while struggling with losing his identity, purpose, and humanity, Jon finds out that his mother died wishing he could live. She never abandoned him, and it’s not that she didn’t want him. When everything else was dead (his father, his siblings, his father’s dynasty, thousands more), he just had to live against all odds. And won’t that be the same in Winds and Dream? He’s no longer Ned’s son, he’s no longer a brother of the Night’s Watch, and he’s not even human anymore. He’s broken and bruised and homeless. But one upon a time, his mother wished life on him. And that’s gotta count for something, right? So what other choice does he have but to LIVE?

Fitzchivalry Farseer really always b saying things like 'his Skill thrust inside my mind over and over until finally Verity's message of 'bring me another pepsi' exploded inside of me, the strong spurts of his skill-desire (for Pepsi) impregnating my unresisting skill-uterus (with the order to bring him a pepsi). I lay there, gasping and still skill-bucking slightly, amazed at the sheer power of Verity's skill as he'd skill-bred me like a slutty little skill-princess (so that I'd get up and get him a Pepsi). Verity playfully skill-slapped me on the ass as I slowly stood, legs shaking, to carry out his order. Yes, my King. Yes' and then Robin Hobb yells at us for implying that he may possibly be a little bit queer

okay so i’ve been thinking a lot about thoros as a frankenstein/prometheus-like figure and about beric as his creature and how lady stoneheart is referred to as beric’s “lover” but they were never really together since beric gave his life for hers when thoros refused to resurrect her just like frankenstein refused to make a companion for his creature and about how qyburn and the bloody mummers function as a foil to thoros and the brotherhood and qyburn also becomes a frankenstein of sorts when he resurrects the mountain and how qyburn’s relationship with his creature clearly is very different from thoros and beric’s relationship with eachother and how qyburn specifically named his creature after cersei’s dead husband and…. do you see where i’m going with this?
#sorry for rambling#i’m a bit worried this frankenstein intends to give his creature a wife is all i’m saying….#this has been somewhat of an ongoing saga for me actually#when i discovered that qyburn in his very first appearance is described as a fatherly one in maester’s grey#to mirror thoros being called beric’s mother#i nearly died#asoiaf#valyrianscrolls#thoros of myr#qyburn#beric dondarrion#catelyn stark#lady stoneheart#cersei lannister#frankenstein
