Ed Sheeran is not self-made

There's a narrative around Ed Sheeran about how he slept in a car and hustled so hard to make it. What this narrative leaves out is that Sheeran grew up in a mansion, went to an expensive private school, and occasionally crashed in his car by choice. Even recently on Conan's podcast, he talks about his work ethic of running all over London playing multiple stages per night.

What his privileged perspective leaves out is that most young people starting out actually have to have jobs. It's hard to stay out late every night of the week playing clubs when you have a 4am shift at Starbucks and are working full time hours, or even more, to make ends meet. Wealthy people tend to be absolutely ignorant of the head start and privilege that it gives them.
