Full feature and ticket entry via CLASH
Authenticity is at the core of everything Brooklyn Brewery undertake. Created by the team at Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn Sound is providing music fans with an insight into the musical subcultures that are thriving in NYC and the sounds that fuel them, alongside a platform for the leading protagonists to perform. 2018 saw Brooklyn Sounds tours with Ho99o9, Lightning Bolt and Chk! Chk! Chk!, this year the team is once again gearing up to host another series of explosive one-off shows.
Championing New York's thriving music scene by providing key players with the means to tour in style. Orange Amps will be powering the back-line, the tour bus fueled up ready, a fridge full of cold beer and tour route mapped. Note that customised Brooklyn x Orange Crush Pro guitar amps wll remain in-house, providing parnering venues and the touring axe slingers that will grace their stages with the amplification fit for rock and roll royalty.
That is why Clash jumped at the opportunity to join forces. For the first tour of 2019, we are going to dive head first into a sonic assault of frantic, ferocious, no-frills metalcore with MUTOID MAN.
Their savage sounds were born in the sweaty basement of legendary Brooklyn metal club St.Vitus.
Guitarist/vocalist Steven Brodsky and drummer Ben Koller joined forces, recruiting then St.Vitus' sound man and master behind the desk Nick Cageo to play bass and a monstrous three-piece was formed. Exuding gritty New York City charm with every note shredded, it is an honour to host MUTOID MAN on U.K stages and bring a slice of St.Vitus' hardcore underground scene to a venue near you.
Their live show is renowned, showmanship abounds melded with relentless head-nod riffs and Van-Halen'esque panache. The gang join Brooklyn Sound straight off the back of tour support duties for the mightiest of mighty, Mastodon. This is a rare opportunity to experience that frenzy up close and personal at one of four of the countries finest music establishments.
Tickets for Brooklyn Sound shows are a mere £5.00 and are available here. Note ticket price also includes a free can of beer, a piece of tour merchandise and there are no other booking fees applied.
The tour will kick off at The Cluny in Newcastle on 17th April, and then roll onwards north of the border to Broadcast in Glasgow (18th), Soup Kitchen in Manchester (20th) before culminating with a very special finale show at The Black Heart in London on 21st April.
See you in the pit!

Mutoid Man, Mastodon & Kvelertak at Casino de Paris Live Review // The Heavy Chronicles
Tumblr media
Full article + photos via The Heavy Chronicles
MUTOID MAN are the goofy kind of band, the one who makes appearances on the Two Minutes to Late Night web show, performing Tom Jones covers in the subway or any other song while being dressed weirdly. Anyway, NYC’s shredding punks prove to have some strong, anthemic songwriting skills on top of their highly infectious rowdiness. We can’t help grinning when hearing the interwoven lyrics of “Kiss of Death” while headbanging all along — the trio’s records hold a decent amount of catchy treasures like this one.  With such seasoned musicians, Mutoid Man kick our asses and crush all eardrums with a high-octane performance that gets everyone in the mood for the night. On drums, Chris Maggio is filling in nicely for Ben Koller (to whom we’re wishing a swift recovery).

Mutoid Man Ulster Hall Live Review// Rock ‘N’ Load and Metal Planet Music
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Full Rock ‘N’ Load review HERE Full Metal Planet Music review HERE
Mutoid Man
kick off proceedings to a modest crowd, happy to have the few in front of them they launch into one of the most brutal and visceral performances Norn Iron has witnessed in a very long time. By the end of the 1st song the few were many and the many were in awe! This trio laid down and gargantuan sounding soundtrack that shook you from the ground up, possibly the loudest gig in the Ulster Hall since the hayday’s of Motorhead, these guys played like they were headlining banging out killer riff after killer riff and winning over the Belfast crowd with each and every single track. Their first three tracks were over in a flash, a gnarly and savage sound pummels the crowd below whilst Mutoid Man throw out a performance as if it were from the depths of hell. Both guitarist and bassist are adorned in Flying V’s wailing away as they give each other the finger, an epic start to a hefty and riff-tastic evenings entertainment.
Tumblr media
As the cool evening in Belfast closes in the line grows outside the Ulster Hall anticipating the doors opening. Tonight Mastodon, US heavy metal masters of sludge and stoner rock, were playing the first night of their UK & European tour. Belfast once again paves the way for a massive band. They were being supported tonight by Kvelertak and Mutoid Man.
Tumblr media
As the crowd filtered in and began to grow Mutoid Man opened up their energy for all to see. This American trio had enough energy and enthusiasm to fill the stage with their presence and the Hall with their fast, raw and powerful sound. Their set, including “Kiss of Death”, “Date with the Devil”, and “1,000 Mile Stare”, proved to everyone there that they more than deserved to be on stage. They pushed on, with a now awe inspired audience lapping it up, with a chugging freight train of a set.
youtube
They played hard, fast, aggressive with a wonderful sense of mischief. Chatting to the audience every so often the roars got louder and more enthusiastic. This is a band that is on the up and if Animal from the Muppets wanted a band that would surpass his energy, then Mutoid Man is the one. Their impromptu partial cover of Led Zepplin’s “Communication Breakdown” was incredible. They already had some fans in the Ulster Hall, but by the end of their set with the last song “Gnarcissist” they had many, many more fans. Mutoid Man are a must see band.

Mutoid Man Live Review at Psycho Las Vegas // mxdwn
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Full review by Raymond Flotat via mxdwn Back at the Vinyl Stage Mutoid Man put on what can only be called a star-making performance.
Fronted by Stephen Brodsky (known also for his role as singer/guitar player Cave In) this trio combined equal parts entertaining hilarity and intricately performed heavy music spanning the gamut of metal genres. Joining Brodsky are Ben Koller on drums and Nick Cageao on bass. Impressively, the three constantly crack jokes or engage the crowd playing loose enough to keep things fun and enjoyable, yet somehow never sacrificing technical skill. Here at Psycho Vegas, they played a mix of original songs (“Micro Aggression” and “Bandages”) mixed with thrash-y covers from all over the musical map. In a short 40 minutes they did excellent renditions of Tom Jones’ “She’s a Lady,” The Animals’ “Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” Led Zeppelin’s “Communication Breakdown” and even King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man” (hilariously changing the song’s chorus to “21st century Mutoid Man”).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At one point Koller even stabbed through his snare drums prompting a hilarious chant egged on by the band of, “fuck you snare / fuck you snare,” followed by “welcome new snare / welcome new snare,” when a stagehand quickly brought up a replacement. During their finale, an uproarious number called “Gnarcissist,” Brodsky continually emoted “I’m never gonna fall in love / with myself.” During its final moments, Koller ran off the stage seemingly randomly. Brodsky invited the crowd to a cappella sing along on various exaggerated treatments to the song’s chorus like a ‘60s soul singer might. Then, punctuating the close of each variation, a drumstick would come flying through the air, sent hurling by Koller hidden in the crowd, and almost unbelievably perfectly hitting one of the cymbals as if to punctuate the measure’s completion. Incredibly, on the final time, Cageao wound up his bass, swung it like a bat and prompted a massive cheer by the crowd on hand. Brodsky’s reputation has always been one of excellence following several incredible years with Cave In, but with this much stage presence and charisma, Mutoid Man should be the hard rock band everyone pays attention to. This is American hard rock the way it should be but rarely is.

Mutoid Man Live at Saint Vitus // KERRANG!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last night was one to remember at Brooklyn’s iconic heavy metal club, Saint Vitus Bar, as Kerrang! curated and sponsored its first ever show in the United States.
Headlined by New York’s Mutoid Man (featuring Stephen Brodsky of Cave In and Ben Koller of Converge), with support from Ruby the Hatchet of Philadelphia, and The Well of Austin, Texas, the evening was filled with fuzzed-out heavy riffs and whiplash-inducing head-banging.
Full article via KERRANG!
The beer-fueled night kicked off with a performance from The Well, whose evil brand of psychedelic stoner rock immediately got the crowd nodding solemnly in unison. By the time Ruby took the stage, the room was already packed; lead singer Jillian Taylor captivated the crowd with her witchy ways, while the band played a dynamic set that made a huge impression on the awestruck crowd. Of course, the Mutoid boys brought things home like only they can, first playing through War Moans in its entirety to celebrate the album’s first birthday — and then blasting through older songs and covers (like Little Richard’s Keep A Knockin’) with power, precision, and humor.
Fortunately, we had star photographer Angela Owens on hand to document every glorious moment. Check out the gallery below, and be sure to stay tuned to Kerrang!’s social channels in the coming weeks, when we’ll be streaming each and every set from the show, uncut!

Mutoid Man Live Review // Hustle & Heart Films

Mutoid Man w/ Lazur/Wulf Live at Masquerade
Full review via Hustle & Heart FIlms
The masquerade is a fantastic club in downtown Atlanta, with 3 separate venues. Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory. Mutoid Man, appropriately enough, played in Hell. The venue was small, but as I walked in, my excitement grew. Sure, stadium concerts are great, but there is NOTHING better than a small, intimate club setting.
I was introduced to the Mutoid Man’s music about a year or so ago by my husband who randomly came across them while browsing new music to listen to. We both instantly fell in love with them, so getting tickets to this show the second they went on sale was a no-brainer! The opening band, Lazer/Wulf was new to me, and I enjoyed the hell out of them. Playing mostly instrumental metal, these guys completely kicked ass. Heavy and insane guitar playing, combined with incredible drumming and bass playing. I was instantly a new fan. If you haven’t heard of these guys, their music is streaming on Amazon music, check them out! One of the best opening bands I’ve seen in a long time. I’ll be seeing them again for sure! Now onto why we drove 4 hours to Atlanta...Mutoid Man!
Opening with "Melt Your Mind" off of their newest album, War Moans (buy it ASAP. You’ll thank me) I knew we were in for a mindblowing show. These guys are FLAWLESS live. The album War Moans is perfect anyways and hearing the tracks live made me love it even more. Hard-hitting insane drumming by ex Converge drummer, Ben Koller, killer bass playing by Nick Cageao, and fronted by one of the best guitarists/vocalists around now, Stephen Brodsky. These guys had a stage presence that you just don’t see anymore in the music scene. They have chemistry, they’re goofy and fun and know how to work a crowd. I had a lot of laughs by their constant giving each other the middle finger while playing.
The show was constant high energy. They played my absolute favorites such as "Microaggression", "Date with the Devil", and even slowed it down and played "Bandages." (My new song to conquer on guitar). You can tell these guys love what they do. Metal has been in a weird place for a while, but these guys breathe new life into it and prove GOOD heavy metal is still alive and will kick all ass.
My ONLY complaint was that the show was only an hour long. I wanted more. I guess we’ll just have to go see them every single time they come around. Pensacola? Atlanta? Come back, guys!! Living in the south now, we need metal down here, badly!
If you love heavy metal and need something new and completely awesome to listen to, please pick up Mutoid Man’s discography, see them live, and buy their merchandise at shows/their website. Get these guys out there more!! I guarantee they’ll be the next big thing in metal if people would just step out of their comfort zone and try something NEW. They’re on tour now, so if they’re coming by your city buy a ticket. Take off work, and go have your face melted off. You'll be completely entertained by one of the best heavy metal bands around. Trust me.
