Tan Kee Pelangi (Joo Yee)

Joo Yee - Tan Kee Pelangi has been the favourite among students for decades. It has moved around JB overs the years and now is located at corner stall of that hawker centre which opposite of the famous “San Lou Seafood”. The stall mainly sold some desserts and their signature dessert were ice kacang and cendol.

Ice Kacang

The mountain of crushed ice buries a generous portion of red beans, corn, attap seed and topped with chocolate syrup. The owner made their own chocolate syrup from cocoa powder and it's absolutely free even if you request for more. Chocolate lovers would completely enjoy each of every spoonful. Overall for the ice kacang was not too sweet. This is an irresistible for the people to eat ice kacang especially on sunny day in Johor Bahru.

Ice Cendol

Went to Tan Kee Pelangi must order their ice kacang. Everyone sure have this comment to this stores. However, we went there to order ice kacang and cendol and we found that cendol is no way inferior with their ice kacang. Especially, the strong of coconut milk and palm sugar syrup taste combine with a big amount of red bean and cendol. It really brought a big shock to us because their palm sugar and coconut milk were very rich and fragrant. It was a reason why many people like to come their stall to have a bowl of cendol.

Hiap Joo Bakery

Hiap Joo Bakery was one of the oldest and well known Hainan traditional bakery in Johor. The bakery was located in the Tan Hiok Nee Street. Most of the bakeries nowadays are using oven to bake the cake and bread. However, Hiap Joo Bakery still keep to use wood kiln baking method to do the banana cake and bread until now. They offered a fresh with different kind flavoured of breads and aromatic banana cakes. That is the most important point to keep their customer loyalty to them. Moreover, people from other states or traveller are attracted many admiring to their cake and bread. If you are here for their banana cake like us, then you must go earlier to queue there even though the banana cakes will sold until evening for weekdays and Saturdays.

Banana Cake

This was the best banana cakes we ever tasted. Hiap Joo’s banana cakes contain no preservative so we advised that the best consumed was within a day. Although its appearance looked ordinary like other cakes but never judge a book by its cover. The cake was moist and fluffy, and packed full of authentic banana flavour. When we tried the banana cake, we felt like taking one more slide and another slide until whole packet of cake gone. Therefore, it was worth to queue up and buy it.

San Tai Tong Tang

San Tai Tong Tang was a stall that sold a variety of mouthwatering sweet soup such as green bean soup, red bean soup, sweet potato soup and so on. This stall was located at KSL city mall and it was suitable to quench your thirsty in shopping. Although their stall was small but they could provide a comfortable place for customers to have their sweet soup.

Bubur Chacha

It was a traditional Malaysian dessert. In this dessert, it looks colourful as it consists of different colour of ingredients like purple and orange colour sweet potatoes and sago pearls. Normally, it was served in hot so that we could smell the fragrant of coconut.

Black glutinous rice dessert

The adding of coconut milk helped black glutinous rice to get a bonus marks. It was provided awesome taste to this dessert. Their black glutinous rice dessert was thick as they put enough black glutinous rice inside this dessert and it helped us to feel full for longer. The suitable sweetness let us soon dispatched the black glutinous rice dessert.

Maison au choux

Maison au choux was a small stall that sold cream puff. It was located at ksl shopping mall. They sold a lot of different flavours of cream puff and ice cream puff. The puff was freshly made by the worker eveyday after they received order from customers. Therefore, customer were able to try the freshly made puff.

Durian Cream Puff

We chose another flavour which was durian cream puff. The durian cream puff can be eaten within one-bite so that the filling will not spilled all over your mouth. Whipped cream filling of the durian cream puff itself consisted durian pulp and gave a rich texture of the durian cream puff. Overall the durian cream filling is flavourful and the durian cream puff had a crisp crust and yet soft and moist texture within. People who liked durian should not missed out this durian cream puff!

Matcha Cream puff

There was a reason for people to try their matcha puff. You got to taste a sweet and matcha flavor of creamy filling that was great flavourful. A bite of weight that provided a convenience for people to get a full matcha fillings burst in your mouth. A crunchy crust served with a rich of matcha taste that gave a good combination of the puffs dessert.

Emack & Bolio’s

Emack & Bolio’s was a multi-award-winning ice cream store that began in Boston, United States. They have more than 35 stores around the world and now they open store at KSL, Johor Bahru. They provided a diversified of ice cream flavours and they gave customer to try some of the flavours of ice cream in order to choose the most satisfied flavour of ice cream. The internal decoration of store was simple and all in purple colour.

Salted Caramel Chocolate Prezzel

It was one of the signature flavor of ice-cream in the shop. It was recommended by the worker. Before we chose the flavor of the ice-cream we also could chose the cone. There have a lot of different outrageous cone and we had chosen the cone that covered with fruit loops. The size of the ice-cream was quite big and it was suitable for 2-3 people. Overall of the ice-cream was unique compare to other ice-cream. Although it was a little bit sweet but it was nice and worth to had a try.

Choco Choco

It is a newly opened in KSL City Mall and sells many delicious chocolate desserts. Their desserts are very special because each dessert have adorable cartoon themed and it look so cute. The environment is very nice and comfortable. Many people like to come here and have a dessert at here.

Cartoon Dark Chocolate

It was a dark chocolate cake. On the top of the cake was having some cartoon decoration. There were many types of different cartoon decoration and the cartoon that we chose was Snoopy. When we passed through the shop, we were attracted by the cake as its decoration was really cute. Although it was dark chocolate cake but the taste will not too bitter. It was a combination of bitter with sweet and it was very nice.

Strawberry Short Cake

Strawberry Short Cake was a homemade cake that provided by Choco Choco shop. It served with fresh strawberries filling, a layered of strawberry jelly, a layered of strawberry flavour of sponge cake and a layered of sweetened whipped cream which covered with white chocolate sauce. Besides that a fresh strawberry covered with icing that make the dessert with a delicate sweetness and looks very tasty. People who preferred to eat a sweet taste of strawberry cake must try it.

Fresh Garden

Fresh garden was a small stall that sold different flavors of bubble egg waffles. It was located at KSL shopping mall. Although is a small stall but a lot of people queue to buy. They had many kind of flavors that customers could choose so the customers just follow their desire. It is suitable for people to eat a bubble egg waffle at the same time while shopping around the mall.

Chocolate and Cheese Bubble Egg Waffle

They had many kind of flavor that you could chose so you just follow your desire. Therefore, we chose bubble egg waffle with the topping of chocolate and cheese sauce. We enjoyed a crunchy and warm oozing dessert as they baked it on the spot. You can taste the rich cheese and chocolate in your mouth. The mix of bubble egg waffle with cheese and chocolate sauce could let you taste salty sweet at the same time. It was a wonderful dessert.

Chicken Ham and Cheese Bubble Egg Waffle

We had chose another flavour which name was chicken ham & cheese bubble egg waffle. This was a salty flavour and can taste the small slices of chicken ham and rich cheese inside the bubble egg waffle. Mayonnaise sauce was put on the top of waffle itself and this made the texture not too greasy.

La Gourmet Dessert

This a dessert shop is main on Hong Kong Dessert, the name of the cafe in Cantonese "Mat Dou Lou" means "mix everything together", implies that icy dessert here comprised of a big variety of ingredients. Mango is their main fruit in ice dessert and you will always see it. Mount Austin is their second branches in Johor Bahru and their headquarter was at Taman Pelangi.

Durian + Mango Ice

It was a dessert that have the main combination of durian and mango. This dessert consisted of a scoop of frozen durian flesh, sago, mango and the durian shave ice. Durian and mango that they used were very fresh. When we tried this dessert, we could taste the rich durian flavor like we were eating durian. Overall of this dessert was not too sweet and was very suitable for the durian lover.

Lava Cookies Chocolate

Lava Cookies Chocolate served with a scoop of Oreo ice cream and a chocolate flavor of lava cookie. I think it was a lava cake at first but actually it was a crunchy lava cookie. There were full of chocolate sauce inside the lava cookie. It served with a hot plate and the lava cookie were cooked on the spot so you were able to enjoy the warm oozing chocolate lava cookie. Oreo ice cream was not too sweet that helped to balance the sweetness of the chocolate lava cookie.

Waku Waku

Waku Waku was a newly open dessert shop which located at Mount Austin. The name of the dessert shop “Waku Waku” reminds me of a Japanese restaurant name instead of dessert shop. The overall design of the shop was based on a simple minimalist design. It is mostly in white, light brown and also greenery plants as decoration. It was a nice place to have dessert and can more close to the nature.

Waffle with Matcha and Chocolate Gelato

The surface of the waffles taste crispy while the center of the waffles were soft and it was taste more like bread compare to the usual waffles. Besides, when the waffles were serves, it was full of delicious aroma. The matcha and chocolate gelatos have a very rich taste. Moreover, the combination tastes for this two gelato are match with each other. In addition, there had many specials toppings that can be choose from the menu. The toppings that we choose were espresso almond crumble and match chia seed granola. These toppings increase the crunchiness of the tastes of waffles. Overall, the waffles gave a soft and chewy taste, when it mixed with gelatos and toppings it gave a sweet and crunchy taste.

Earl Grey & Blueberry pudding

The taste of the pudding was earl grey tea and on the top of the pudding was cover by the homemade blueberry jam. The earl grey pudding was not astringent and the homemade blueberry jam taste sweet. The combination of early pudding and homemade blueberry jam gave a mild sweetness. Not only earl grey & blueberry pudding, there also had another 2 flavours of pudding such as uji match pudding and strawberry milk pudding. It was a dessert that very suitable for children.

Llao Llao is a shop that selling frozen yogurt and it has open over 23 countries in the world. Its concept was similar to many ice-cream stores which you need to queue and order the frozen yogurt according to own desired cup size and select the topping as well. After making the payment, everyone can enjoy their frozen yogurt that they customize.

Frozen Yogurt Ice Cream with Caramel biscuits Sauce and Frozen Yogurt Ice Cream with Oreo Crunchy Topping

Frozen yogurt ice cream are made to be healthy with a high nutritional values. People sometimes are commend with serving chocolate sauce in a dessert shop. Four of us had ordered a frozen yogurt ice cream served with a sweetness sauce of caramel biscuits sauce and a frozen yogurt ice cream with Oreo crunchy topping. The frozen ice cream itself brought a low concentration of sour taste and top up any toppings were very delicious. It actually met our personal taste.

Baskin Robbin was a worldwide ice-cream store. They have many branches in every country. In Malaysia, we could found this ice-cream store in every shopping mall. Every people like to come here buy a scope of ice cream and share with their families and friends. This can maintain a good relationships and share happiness with their families and friends. Baseball Nut with Brownie Sundae Ice Cream

We chose double junior scoop package as we got RM 1 for second scoop promotion at that time. The first scoop that we chose was Brownie Sundae flavor and it had no sugar added. It was a brownie butter and cream flavor ice creams combined with brownie slices. The second scoop that we chose was Baseball Nut. It was a vanilla flavour ice cream covered with roasted and cashews and served with black raspberry ribbon. Baseball Nuts brought a shock to us as good combination of raspberry and cashews.

Cotton Candy with Vanilla Ice Cream

Another two of us had chosen cotton candy and vanilla as our double junior ice cream. Cotton candy is a swirl of pink and purple cotton candy flavoured ice cream. Its colour was so beautiful and its sweets as like a candy. Thus, it may popular for many people especially for kids. Its vanilla also not bad and vanilla is one of the basic flavours ice cream in between chocolate and strawberry flavour. Therefore, vanilla is a flavour of you will never feel bored unless you do not like vanilla.

M’s Patisserie Studio

This shop is opened by a women owner. All the cakes are hand-made and made by herself. It located at second floor of three storey shop house. This shop does not have signboard and is not easily to find out if you go there searching their signboard. She mainly receives orders from online customers and booking by telephone for one whole cake and sometimes she also manage to sell small pieces of cakes with limited quantity for those customers who may want to buy per piece of cake.

Chocolate Durian Mousse

It was one of their most popular signature cake in M's Patisserie Studio. The outer layer of the cake was covered with rich dark chocolate sauce. This cake contains of two layers of sponge cake and in between of the sponge cake contain of the frozen fresh durian flesh. When the first bite of it, we could feel the rich durian flavor diffuse in our mouth. Therefore, it was worth to have a try. 

Chocolate Banana Cake

Banana are cooling and freezing combine inside with creamy chocolate. Cold banana tastes pretty refreshing and it combines the sweetness of creamy chocolate. Cake was spread with coco powder pebbling the surface and to make it even chocolaty. That was a good combination between the chocolate and banana fruit.

Q House Johor Bahru was a Hong Kong based restaurant. Q House Johor Bahru managed to offer a wide variety of choices on the menu for the different preferences of the guests and keeps the taste buds excited. The environment of the restaurant was quite comfortable and the restaurant usually played some music and it could make people having a good mood in having their foods.

Bonsai Vanilla Ice-cream

We ordered this because we were interested by its design. The ice-cream served in a bonsai. On top of the vanilla ice-cream were covered by Oreo biscuit so that it looks like “soil”. The ice-cream was tasty and it will not too sweet. It was suitable to be ordered as a dessert after having their meals.

Mixed Fruit Sago

There are four types of dessert for Sagu Soup Series which are Cantaloupe Sago, Mango Sagu, Watermelon Sagu and Mixed Fruit Sago. Nothing beats a bowl of this cool refreshing Honeydew Sago Dessert with milk on a warm summer’s day. Mixed Fruit Sago served with sago, colorful jelly and three types of fruit. Urban artisan was an ice cream shop that well-known in Penang. Urban Artisan was served with a local soft serve and ice cream that first actually started in Penang. Now, they expand their outlets to Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur. They always produce some interesting combinations of flavours that prepare by handcraft every day. They change the soft serve ice cream every Tuesday. It can ensure that customer can try the new flavour and keep coming their shop. It gave a comfortable atmosphere when you walk into their shop.

Bloody Orange x Quenchy Watermelon flavor was one of the mixed ice-cream sold in Urban Artisan. This flavor was quite famous and was the top choice for customers. When we tried this flavor of ice-cream the taste was unique and delicious. It was not too sweet and the ice-cream melt in the mouth in a very short time. Therefore, this ice-cream worth to try.

Champagne Blue (Non-Alcohol) x Purple Dream Grape

This ice cream mixed with champagne and grape flavours. It presented in blue and purple colours. The colours was very colourful. The ice cream was mixed perfectly because you can taste the champagne without alcohol and sweet grape at the same times. This flavour only served in certain period.

The Workshop, is one of restaurants operated by Gran Fiesta. It located at Mount Austin area.The whole building was painted in black colour, modern yet adventurous design. Its interior, reflects industrially-inspired elements, by featuring exposed bulb lighting and playful wall illustrations. The Workshop is a cafe and it also look like bar so it is suitable for everybody's needs from morning tea to night drinks.

Baked Cheese Bacon

It was a unique dessert because this dessert was salty. Owner of shop created the salty dessert series and was very special because this gave more choices to let customers chosen instead of sweet desserts. The bacon put it on top of the waffle and sprinkled a lot of cheese to make the waffle had more textures. After that, they put cheesy sauce and mayonnaise sauce on the top of waffle as decoration. The waffle was crispy at outside and soft at inside.

Rollney Malaysia

It is a shop sells Hungarian pastries baked and served with a delicious softserve on the top of chimney cake. Taman Mount Austin is their first place set up in Malaysia and only in Johor Bahru. Many people like to have a first try at here because there is on one ever selling this kind of dessert in Malaysia before. The shop gives a nice environment to people having a sit inside and can smell the roasted chimney cakes in all around.

Rollney Malaysia served with delicious Hungarian pastries with soft serve ice-cream. Chimney cake was first dough kneaded into strips, rolled into a cone-shaped that made with sugar, butter and other ingredients. Then they were roasted till golden brown in colour. 

Rollney Malaysia was able to let you to customize your own chimney cake with a smooth soft serve ice-cream of your choice. Currently, Rollney only offered two flavour of soft serve ice-cream in vanilla or chocolate mint flavour. You can choose for 1 or 3 toppings with different price.

We chose to try both flavour of soft serve ice-cream. I chose to combine chimney cake with the vanilla flavour of soft serve ice-cream and topped of corn flake and biscuit pretzels. Then, my other friends chose chocolate mint soft serve ice-cream with baked chimney cake and topped with Oreo chips and corn flake.

Even though you finished all the soft serve ice cream, chimney cake is just like a sugar strips and crispy enough for you to eat it alone. It was a perfect combination between smooth soft serve and freshly baked chimney cakes.

DaeBap Korean Home Meal

Daebap is now have two branch in Kulai and Mount Austin. This restaurant will be known because of the Wafu restaurant. This is another business for Wafu’s boss. Daebap was an individual package Korean-style restaurant for the concepts of providing more choices to the customer who loved Korean food.  Daebap is also served with some delicious desserts for you to taste after meals.

You were never ate a cheesecake like this Black sesame matcha cheesecake. It showed a colourful and attractive appearance and its appearance will encourage you to taste this cheesecake. The important point of this cheesecake was the matcha & black sesame that give this two flavor in a good combination. Even though the cheesecake is look a bit weird at first but I recommended you to have a tried for this cheesecake.

Oatmeal and corn flake that was crunchy and makes a noise when you bite it. It is also offered with the fruit, oat and yogurt topping that could increase the nutrition for this dessert. It gave a crunchy and smooth taste for chocolate & Oreo parfait.
