NMP: New Media Publishing and Distribution
I think this was the most challenging class thus far. It was an emotional roller coaster. My anxiety was through the roof. My expectations in New Media Publishing and Distribution was to learn how to organize material, content development, and Interact more with my professor and classmates. Little did I know, I would be interacting with both my classmates and professor quite a bit regarding the capstone project.
My reality beat my expectations by a land slide. I learned so much throughout this course. Entering this course was difficult for me because half way through the program I had to with draw because of the loss of my mother. When I decided to return I lost everything I worked on because I didn’t keep up with my website. In a small period, I had to redesign a whole new website and learn everything all over again. It was not like riding a bike. The saying “you have to use it, so you don’t lose it” is so true. In this class I was able to put everything that I have learned so far into practice. I realize I am not the greatest under certain pressures.
I think it made a lot of things difficult for me when it came to the capstone project but with the help of my professor I learned a lot. I am forever grateful. I realize why professor is the expert. The most valuable thing I learned was stick to the facts. I realized the difference between being bias versus being objective. I think in the past it was easy for me to stay out of it but for my capstone project I picked something that was a conflict of interest. I also learned not to use words like seem, or maybe. As a Journalist we are supposed to be reliable and credible sources. Anything we report on must be or not.
This course prepared me for the real world. In so many ways, I did not expect. It taught me how to improvise when an interview falls through. It introduced me to a lot of my flaws. For instance, I make a lot of careless errors. Whenever I do something. I will have to let it sit for a day and go back and look at it. A tip that helps is letting my writing sit for a few hour or a day and going back and editing. Now that I know my weaknesses. I can work on it.
In this class I was able to learn how to produce, publish, market, and monetize. I really enjoyed the media kit. I also realized I am good with social media. I just need to keep up with it on a consistent basis. Although my numbers are low, I was able to realize the things I need to do to fix it. I will take everything I learned and apply it. I can’t believe how much I learned in one class.
Finally, I realized how important it is to have a plan (Distribution plan). I will be taking that with me to keep myself organized.

Public Relations and Reputation Management: Mastery Journal
I think this month was a long journey. I was at a weary point of the year as we approach graduation. I felt drained as I had to obtain so much more new information. I remember being automatically motivated by the introduction of My professor.
My original goal was to be an expert in PR & Reputation management. I do not believe I have met the goal of being an expert but now I have a better understanding and the tools I need to become an expert.
During this course, I was able to learn about the difference between Journalism versus PR professionals, promotional stories, brand Journalism, how to create a more professional about me page, and reputation management. I did not realize how vital it was to have a good relationship with PR professionals. They find a lot of the stories and provide it to us. I think I struggled the most with my promotional story. It was hard for me to really grasp the concept of sell and promoting something to my viewers. My story turned out to be more informational and standard.
The best part of this course was being able to create my about me page. I had a lot of fun doing it. It also allowed me to really think about what I was really giving my audience and what was my overall purpose and vision was supposed to be. I had a hard time talking and focusing on myself so that my audience could understand where I was coming from.
Finally, the PSA (Public Service Announcement). Honestly, that was my most adventurous project. It was so new to me. I didn’t realize how many PSA's I have seen over my lifetime. Overall, I really enjoyed the course and thought my professor did a really good job in delivering the information he provided us with.

Social Media and Online Community Engagement: Mastery Journal
My original objective in Social Media and Online Community Engagement (SME) was to be an expert in Social Media. I can’t say that I am there yet because I believe that an expert must deliver results that they are an expert. At this moment, I cannot deliver any results that I am an expert but now I have the tools and knowledge to be one.
My Expectations going into this course was that I would be more active on social media sites more aware of current events and that it would be fun. I think this course did far more than meet my expectations. That is rare for me because oftentimes reality is so much different and disappointing. Not in this case. I actually had a great time learning so much and being able to put it into action. The feedback in this course also allowed me to see where I needed much improvement.
Things I Learned This Month:
1. There are over 100 social media platforms. During this course, we learned about the most popular ones. The reason being would be to increase our online exposure and viewership; therefore, driving more traffic to our page.
2.I never knew about Storify, Digg, SlideShare, Reddit, Google+, and etc.
3. In Social Media and Online Community Engagement I learned that I can be more organized and efficient by using social media management systems like HootSuite, Klout, or TweetDeck. This system allows you to schedule post ahead of time, organize conversations, analyze your results and more. I remember having to use HootSuite when I worked at CBS radio a couple of years ago.
Our first discussion board was to use Klout and analyze my data. All I can say is that I was so embarrassed at my results. My results were a real wake up call.
4. Posting more often and consistently increases viewership.
5. I learned the goal is to interact and engage with your audience. An individual can do this by asking questions when posting, adding hashtags, adding links, images, videos and etc. This method increases your SEO( Search engine optimization) and social media engagement allowing you to gain more followers and again viewership
A journalist has to go where the people are going and the people are going to social media for their news. It’s quicker, more accessible because of mobile devices, and the newest way to implement the news. This helps us to reach our target audience and promote the news.
Honestly, my biggest take away from this course is to keep posting as often as possible and with purpose. This class also taught me that I was doing a disservice to myself when I didn’t post on platforms that I was already using on a personal level. For example, I started posting on LinkedIn and didn't even know I could use it as a platform.
I definitely want to give a big thanks to my professor in this course.

Multimedia Reporting(MRT): Mastery Journal
My Goal to Mastery these last 4 weeks in MRT has been a really been great experience.
This class has taught me the elements of multimedia reporting better known as (MRT). It has enhanced my writing, interviewing , and creative skills. For example in this course I was asked to publish stories where I would have to use a combination of text, photos, video, or graphic to put a story together. It encouraged me to use my creative brain.
One thing that really stuck out to me during this course was that reporting was not about what I thought or my personal opinions. It is really about accuracy , precision, and clarity. People want to be able to trust that your stories are credible and not just entertainment. MRT helped me to credit my sources appropriately. This is an important substance that I can take into my professional and personal life.
MRT definitely helped me to meet my original objective. My original goal in MRT was to master more interactive, storytelling skills, presentations, and interviewing. I was able to put what I learned into action. For me this was great because I am a kinesthetic learner. In doing so it allowed me to see what I have mastered and the areas I still need to develop. My conclusion is that I have a lot of work to do.
One of my favorite parts about this course was being able to plan, report, and produce my stories. I learned about all the different ways to tell a story whether it was a follow up story, feature story, or etc. The media makes it all look so easy but it’s not. My mind tends to go a mile a minute. I struggle with being able to narrow down a story because I want to talk about everything.
I really enjoyed our discussion boards throughout this course. Reflecting on different news stories and being able to evaluate my website and SEO. I also realized how much I was lacking in marketing my content, and my social media interaction.
Overall I had a great experience. This course has given me the tools and knowledge I need to advance personally, and professionally. My professor was very professional. She gave me the feedback I needed in order to advance my professional career. I was also aware of how important it was do be on time and to deliver everything that is asked of me. The eye opener and attractiveness of this course was monetizing my online content. Everyone wants to be able to know how to make money with whatever they are doing.
Thank you,
Berline Jean-Baptiste

Expectations Vs. Reality Digital News Production
In this course, I expected to be able to develop better footage and learn the art of art of storytelling through video. I wanted to be able to be able to create something that would grab people’s attention and that my viewers would love to watch. My expectations lined up with the expectation of the course.
I was expected to learn how to shoot, edit, and publish reports. This was very interesting. In shooting, I learned that having a tripod is super important so that I don’t have shaky footage. I thought this would be an easy course but it was a little more difficult than I anticipated. Shooting video takes a lot of patience, being detail oriented, and focus. The course also requires us to learn how to develop compelling stories combining audio, still photography, video, and digital graphics. The editing portion is very time-consuming and there is so much to learn. The biggest thing that I learn was to be simple, clear, and concise. There is no need to distract or complicate things. People like things that are easy and understandable.
I felt that it was helpful to learn how to shoot different angles such as medium, tight, and wide shots. Those are important when it comes to editing. Research is very important. In order to tell a story, you must be able to identify what that story is and investigate. The things that I felt were more useful was jump cuts, the rule of thirds, writing a script, B-Rolling, the editing process, shooting and editing interviews, and documentary storytelling.
Interviews I feel are a whole another monster in itself. Script writing is definitely important in the process of becoming a journalist. I also feel like it keeps you organized overall.
It was difficult not to do jump cuts or talk while shooting an object. This prepares me to be a journalist because I was able to learn how to tell a story and publish. I was able to learn how to investigate and find the story. Content is very important.
It also taught me how to be a professional. Editing to me was difficult. I still have a long way to go but I got better in telling a story.
I was so scared going into this course. I did not think I would be able to get through but through persistence and not giving up I was able to develop some great content. I was able to create a story using audio, video, and photos. This was a huge accomplishment for me. Finding an event was a hassle in itself and finding out if I would be able to go and shoot these events.
Overall I believe I am capable of developing a great story that others are able to watch. I was thankful for my professor and the advice he gave us. The feedback was amazing it would help me going into the next session knowing what I needed to improve on. Things that I had difficulties with and that improved were headlines, not having shaky footage, and the thing I need to improve is audio. Through the lectures, Lynda.com, and course materials it helped me to develop and create good footage. I know I still have a long way to go but I am happy with where I am.
You can visit www.berlinesedition.com if you want to see what I was able to do this semester. My last four stories will tell it all.
Thanks for visiting.

Multimedia Development and Editing
·
I expected overall to have fun during this course. My goals were to learn better photo techniques, and editing skills.
I will definitely say that the course expected a lot from me but that’s a good thing.
In our syllabus it mentioned that by the end we should be able to
1. Implement and understand the editorial process.
2. Use preproduction techniques for asset, equipment, and story management.
3. Produce stories utilizing a digital camera to collect and gather information,
4. Show literacy in postproduction skills by editing text, images, audio, and video for story telling.
5. Define story arc,
6. Compose headlines and captions with SEO standards,
7. Evaluate distribution methods,
8. Decide which media-distribution channels to use to promote stories.
Editing audio was the content I felt most helpful in this course. As a journalist I think that is a much-needed tool. I really thought it was interesting. I still need to improve a lot more but I definitely think I am progressing in the right direction.
Professor Sharon did a good job in telling us the dos and don’ts when it comes to editing, taking photos, and publishing. This course prepared me in so many ways for the world of journalism. It taught me what to expect. The course gave me the foundational skills of editing audio and footage. I really thought it was interesting how much work it took to great photo. I feel much more prepared than I was before I took this class but I also feel like I have along way to go.

Mastery
This Month in Research and Investigative Skills Development I learned a lot. I realized a lot of what I was not doing last semester. I enjoyed taking this class and interviewing. I was not happy when I had to retake the class again but at the end I got out of it what I needed. I just wish I were not going through such a rough time in my personal life. It would have made this month a lot easier. My professor did a great job breaking things down for me that I did not have an understanding of. My goal was to do better than the first time around and I think I improved a little. My grammatical errors were still a struggle. I will have to find a way to go to the writing center. In life, you have to work with what you have.
Things that I learned
1. Scientific Method for Journalists
2. Researching Data
3. Finding Meaning in Data
4. Infographics
5. Google Maps
6. Defining Public Records (and FOIA)
7. Finding & Using Public Records
8. Researching – and Avoiding – Bias Tutorial
9. Effectively Researching with Wikipedia
10. Advanced Search & Citation Techniques
I learned a lot more of than this but these are a few of key things. I love to perform interviews and talk to people. That was my favorite part of the whole thing. I honestly feel that this class will help me be better at making deadlines. I struggled this month and last month because of personal issues but sometimes it doesn’t matter. I also loved being able to look up public records. I learned a lot of things I did not know. I did not know churches were business registered. I than realized the reason why. I also learned how to integrate quotes into my article instead of leaving them alone. Researching was very important and inserting hyperlinks.
My hardest time in this class was find an interview and being able to meet the availability. Counting on the person I was interviewing was hard to because a lot of my interviews sometimes fell through. That was hard because I would do so much research and would have to change my angle. With limited time it doesn’t make it easy a lot of the time. Professor Foley gave the class a good guideline, she was able to give a lot of support and research, and she is great at getting back to you in a timely manner. It was a pleasure taking her class for a second time. She definitely gave me a run for my money.

Mastery Goals for RISD
This month in Research and Investigative Skills Development I struggled terribly. It seem the harder I worked the more I failed. Things that I learned was that I should give myself credit for my own work, and that I had a lot of grammatical errors.
The Goals
- To prove the credibility of the data and sources
- Find new information
- Search for public records, and online databases
- “Analyze and interpret raw data, employ advanced online research, develop conclusions based on qualitative and quantitative analysis, and evaluate legal implications of data usage. “
Thing Learned
- Infographics
- Researching data
- The Art of Interview
- Finding & Requesting Interviews
- Defining & Finding Experts
- Katie Couric Interview
- Journalist Creed
- FOIA
I really enjoyed setting up interview, doing the research on the topics, and performing the actual interview. I love talking and interviewing people. It’s an opportunity to investigate and get to know more about something. I love that aspect.
I was able to get through the end of the class but I realized I just need to keep practicing and try to see the writing center when I get a chance. I also learned that online proofreader are not that reliable. I would shy away from those.
My professor did a great job uploading grades and always answering us in a timely manner when she was available. I was only unable to get in touch with her two times this semester and that was when I emailed her on Fridays. I must say I wish this class were longer. I learned that I do not like receiving bad grades after working so hard on an assignment but that’s life. People are not going to be as sympathetic for your situation because the truth of life is everyone is dealing with something. You just have to learn to be able to balance, prepare, and try to keep on working.

Publication for Legal Aspect of Media
My favorite assignments were the discussion post. These assignments gave me the opportunity to learn the material through different scenarios. I love that because I felt like it was hands on. This method made me feel secure in learning the material and taught me a lot about defamation and copyright. I thought those were two things that I really needed to learn. The discussion boards also aloud me to interact with my different classmates and get really good feedback.
Of all the course topics I covered this month I felt that copyrighting was the most important thing that I needed to learned going into the field of communication. Copyrighting is important to know because we need to give credit where credit is due and we can only use things that we have received permission for.
The knowledge I acquired this month will help to handle legal issues by avoiding it. I will not place myself in situation where I am being dishonest. I will not defame the name others and I will follow the guidelines learned in this class to avoid legal issues in the communication industry.
This course went above and beyond my expectations. I was able to learn things that I did not even know I need it. In this course Professor Maras gave me hands on learning opportunities. I was able to discuss defamation, copyright cases, and more. I believe I will obtain the knowledge I need to be successful in the communication field. I feel more empowered and that I have an increasing chance not to be pulled into any legal fees, or court dates. I think this was one of the best courses so far. Thank you.

WIM Mastery Journal Assignment
The course went above my expectations. I was able to learn different writing styles such as profile, event, advance, press release, how-to’s and more writing. I learned how to write with in the world of journalism. It’s not as easy as I thought. I went in thinking I was such a great writer and this part of the course would be fun. I learned that I was truly shy and it was not as easy for me to take risk and interact with others. Finding stories and having to do interviews was very difficult for me. It takes courage to ask others if you can interview them. If you were to ask anyone around me if Berline Jean-Baptiste were shy they would probably laugh and tell you no. They would think that it was a ridiculous perspective.
I would apply professionalism by using the RISE method.
I wanted to cover creative writing but I learned that journalism and creative writing are two different types of writing style in it self.
Writing for interactive media will help me to be a great digital communicator. I learned that I need headlines, leads, nut graphs, and to give credit to my resources. I learned that proof reading is very essential before publishing. The conclusion and the visual content are important to grab and keep the readers attention.
I felt as though the course did meet my expectation, I just wish that this course in itself were longer. It went to fast. I realize that doing this course online, instead of in the classroom was a little frustrating. I guess I am more hand on. I love the way the class was created to be professional. I hand to go and do real live interviews, research, and observations in order to get the story. My professor was Meredith Cochise. It helped that she had already been in the industry.
In conclusion, during this course I was able to publish my work on my personal website. This was exciting because I could see the amount of people who review my site and where they were viewing it. This class was interesting.

Goals of New Media Communications
My goal originally was to be a more effective communicator. This month was challenging because it caused me to have to think outside of the box. I learned in this course that I need to work on my grammatical errors and narrowing down my ideas. It was a pleasure in this course because our professor was very helpful and had a lot of insight on the journalism and how to reach your audience. In my past post, I mentioned that I would plan accordingly, network and connect with individual in my class, and ask my professor as many questions as possible. I struggled with networking with my peers. I need to do a better job of that through out the semester. I let fear be my stumbling block instead of my stepping-stone.
I learned a lot in this course. I learned that I need to edit my papers because I tend to use a lot of sentence fragment. I was able to learn more about blue host, and wordpress, which was both exciting and frustrating at the same time. The interaction between my peers really helped.
In this course, it allowed me to operate outside of my comfort zone. A lot of times that is one of the hardest places to be. At one point in this course I was challenged so much I felt that I wanted to change my major. I started to doubt and second-guess myself. I still am debating moving but now I am confident if I stay in this course I will do well and succeed.
One of my biggest challenges in this course was trying to narrow down my ideas. I can definitely say that is one of my weaknesses. I really enjoyed this course and the professor. My peers were also a pleasure. I loved my discussion board with them. I always felt encourage and loved the feedback.
