Student mage, aiming to become a battlemage. Plenty of mana, not quite as much brain, but determined to become strong enough to go look for his parents (presumed dead).

Lucas /"Lu"

Fey creature, here via contract as a familiar. Unlike others of his kind, is very interested in magic.

My "mage & familiar" AU 🥴 The familiar contract is basically a 9-5 kind of deal for people where Lu is from, buuut he puts in a lot of overtime since he wants to stay and learn the human world's magic (no other reasons, don't worry about it). And Cheng Xiaoshi or "Charlie", as he goes by at the academy, gets his familiar contract formed as part of the curriculum. Mages don't HAVE to get one, especially not someone aspiring to be a "battlemage." He doesn't need someone to protect him during some long spell cast. But unfortunately he's still being made to do very brainy complicated stuff before he gets to specialize, including long spells and combat practice... so he ends up getting one.

I have some chunk of lore about familiars as well as light magic system stuff written, but that's the basic premise.

listen, sometimes it's more powerful for a fictional relationship to be a friendship precisely because friendship is devalued in comparison to romance. anyone can sacrifice themself for the love of their life. but for a friend? if anything, that kind of devotion can be even more moving than if the relationship is romantic. there's a real dramatic power to prioritising friendship in your narratives sometimes.
