We don’t have a lot of photos together because a) Travis has disproportionally short arms to his body (he admits this himself ok- he’s a trex) and thus he is terrible at selfies and my 5’8 can’t capture all of his 6’3, b) the lighting never works for our skin tones, and c) it’s weird to ask strangers to take your photo! Anyways. We’ve been passing ships in the night this month, and while I do like that I can take up the entire couch and don’t have to hear sports announcers 24/7 😢, miss this one. That’s all! I had to take a class once in college called “difficult conversations” (I had to take a bundle on ‘persuasion’ actually, weird but very fun) and it’s some of the coursework that actually still serves me today. Independent consulting (S/O to my @wearerosie team) is a lot of hard conversations and big decisions. I saw this post-it during my last client office visit, and I freaking loved it. I’ve had it starred ever since, and it gives me a nice nudge whenever I have to have one of the above and I am 100% not feeling confident. I am 26 today, and I like myself. I don’t apologize for my bits and pieces. I am comfortable in this body as it exists right now. No clothes in my closet that I’m waiting to wear until I am 5 pounds lighter, no goals on hold until X thing falls into place, no arbitrary markers of success I’m aspiring to meet. _________ I hope you like you too, and if you’re not quite there, I hope you can be kind to yourself in the interim. If there is anything I’ve learned the last 365 days, it is that life is the great equalizer. We are all truly works in progress. _________ On my 22nd birthday, I wrote a sticky note - that I then made a digital note - on my laptop that read: “Have patience for the process. LOVE the process.” It was a reminder to slow down, to remember that there was a life to be lived in between the dash. _________ That lesson did finally sink in, but my birthday wish on this 26th year is a nod to that sentiment. My wish this year is for more presence, versus pursuit. More thoughtfulness, less haste. Patience. Phone calls. Friends. I’ll let you know how it goes. _________ In the meantime, salud! I’ve been in Houston for a week now, but who am I if I do not #latergram and confuse my parents on my whereabouts despite showing them how to use Find My Friends. I was in Philly for nearly two months this summer, and I have a backlog of photo gems. The Cantú’s are BIG Rocky fans. I’ve seen every single movie. Had to see the statue IRL, and duh, run up the steps. You can’t see, but the inscription on the statue reads: “It’s not how hard you hit. It’s a three year dateversary! We’re both unsure about the actual anniversary because it sort of went like me still being on the apps and him one day saying “I like you, is this exclusive?” and me responding with a WOW OKAY WHERE DID THAT COME FROM (it had been six months, I was dumb) _____ Whenever people who haven’t met Travis ask me to describe him and our relationship, I almost always say - “You just have to meet him.” The man has no pretenses, what you see is what you get, and I adore that honest simplicity about him. I have never sat and wondered what he’s thinking or feeling, or thinking and feeling *about me* because he says it. Or does something that equally communicates it. _____ We’re quick to apologize, slow to anger, and both speak rather plainly - if anything, I speak a little louder 😜 _____ He is witty, thoughtful, spontaneous, gentle, kind, a lifelong learner, tireless in the pursuit of answers to basketball’s questions (ICYMI: he works within operations for an NBA team), and sees the world through an entirely different scope than most people I’ve met ...this is both intriguing and irritating on roadtrips, when he decides to wonder aloud how one could calculate how many highway signs there are in the U.S., the density of a forest, or our estimated time of arrival based on variables like slow-downs and toll roads. _____ Lols aside: He has always let me *be* and supports all that comes with that, which is the best gift. I can be fickle, need my space, have never desired to merge all of my interests with a partner’s, and generally put a large value on my independence. _____ I hope you all have someone who lets you *be*, too. It is magic. _____ Taking a moment to celebrate that today - 🥂 three years of adventures, growing pains, margaritas, and still not knowing how to drive your stick shift car.
