These are the artworks I want to use as part of the personal artwork section.
I need to scan and properly clean up the traditional drawings, it costs a bit to scan large drawings so I want to be 100% sure before I have anything scanned.
Top to bottom:
1. Figure drawing (15 mins) from one of my recent sessions
2. Ebru painting of a rose. Ebru is a very unique style of art where the painting is made on water then transferred to paper. This picture is not as vibrant as the painting is in real life. It should look much better when I have it scanned.
3. Acrylic painting of seashells. I made this in my free time after I learned to paint in college.
4. Background illustration I drew for a game. I am not sure if I can use this because it’s a commission however I was given a lot of freedom when drawing it. The composition, colours and many of the elements where my ideas.
5. Digital illustration I made recently. I started getting into digital painting from 2018, occasionally I give myself digital painting assignments and this beetle painting is the very latest and most complicated. I have a long, detailed post on tumblr and my process for this piece.

This is my first draft for my Sheridan portfolio. I am looking for feedback before I submit everything.
1. Figure Drawing
I’ve yet to scan and properly clean up the figure drawings because they’re too big for my home scanner. I’ll get them scanned at a printing shop tomorrow or some time soon.
2. Hand Drawing
3. Character Rotation
4. Short Animation
https://mynonsensejournal.tumblr.com/post/189796767237/this-is-the-animation-as-part-of-my-portfolio
5. Storyboarding
Still needs some touching up
6. Perspective Line Drawings
Both drawings are done in 2 point perspective.
I originally drew the linear perspective on paper but I wasn’t very happy with it. I scanned it and re-drew the whole thing digitally.
I went out to the gardens near my neighborhood to draw the aerial perspective drawing. I embellished it a little :^)

When colouring the characters I started with the base colour and then overlyed the background colour so the characters don’t stray from the colour script and fit in with the environment.

Spot 2.0 animated vs Spot 2.0 illustrated.
Tumblr media
Above: How Spot will be drawn in animation.
Below: Illustrations of Spot, left to right: on the box he is packaged in, his poster and his icon in his magazine ad.
When Spot is depicted as an illustration he is drawn differently. Eyes are just black ovals with highlights and lines will overlap. If it’s just Spot’s head, no antenna will be drawn.

Some background art for the TVC project. (not in order)
Colouring was one of the hardest parts of the backgrounds. As seen in the colour script, there is a very large colour and mood shift throughout the film and I had to really think about composition and colour palettes. I settled on drawing a large amount of details in the line work and relying on simple, monotonous colours. This would allow me to draw the huge messes in Patty’s room and not have it look distracting or busy as well as allowing the characters to stand out. The monotonous palette style makes use of a single dominant colour for each shot and smooths out the transition from the cool, blue-ish hues in the beginning to the warm, yellow-oranges in the end.
Because the colour palette changes shot to shot, I couldn’t have a set colour palette for the room, I had to pick out new colours for each background and cross-reference the previous backgrounds to make sure items that appear multiple times don’t end up looking completely different.
Just from these backgrounds I have incorporated 2 subtle ways of pairing Patty and Spot. Firstly I gave Patty stuffed toy dogs instead of the typical stuffed bears. She is definitely interested in owning a dog. Secondly Patty has starry wallpaper and when Spot is first introduced, in the magazine advertisement, we see stars surrounding him. Stars are not only a simple and easy to recognize shape but it added detail to the otherwise large, plain walls and helped make the background art look more complete.

For the poster design I started with 3 thumbnails. The poster is meant to advertise the product and not the TVC, so I designed the thumbnails with the intention to make it look overly dramatic with Spot framed as a “hero” against the trash.
I picked the 3rd thumbnail as it put Spot in the center, I felt the front view was too aggressive and the back view took attention away from Spot.

Colour Script
The story starts out blue/purple and dark. Patty is lonely and lives in a mess. As the story progresses, the colour began to warm up, but stays in the purple range. Patty remains blue in the first 3 panels and at the 4th she is out of view removing any remaining blue and leaving the warmer purple of the ad/magazine.
The yellow of Spot 2.0 seen in panel 4 is seen again immediately on the very next scene (panel 5). This is to connect the first 4 panels with the rest as there is a big shift in mood and music at panel 5. The music becomes lighter and faster from panel 5 onwards and colours need to reflect that, as Spot 2.0 gets to cleaning and colours will shift shot to shot from reddish-pink to yellow. Panel 8 is the title card for Spot 2.0 as a product.

TVC project Entry 3
Research into art style references for my TVC project. While they style I used in my previous animations are very cartoon-y already, I want to take it further and aim to animate something that looks like a professional cartoon.
Tumblr media
The first references I looked at was the cartoon My Life as a Teenage Robot. Something I wanted to improve upon with my own art was the use of shapes to create forms. I wanted to create something more stylized, unrealistic and make use of more basic and obvious shapes. My Life as a Teenage Robot does exactly what I am looking for.
Tumblr media
Character designs often utilize long legs with shorter bodies. All designs are drawn as simple as possible and any detail that can be removed is removed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wander Over Yonder is another cartoon that uses the same principles I’ve noticed in My Life as a Teenage Robot. The larger focus on simplified designs, use of basic shapes and rounded edges.
I am also looking at how characters are drawn in different angles or how their models are stretched in different poses.
Tumblr media
Chowder is the last design reference I am looking at as the art style makes use of the simply shapes and roundness I want to incorporate into my work.
I am also looking at Chowder’s facial expressions for my product, dog that eats trash.
Tumblr media
Some studies I’ve drawn based on the art style references I’ve collected. I looked at the commonly used shapes and how they are put together to create forms.
I am mainly concentrating on character design and how these cartoons draw their limbs and facial features.

TVC project Entry 12
These are the colour sheets for Spot 2.0 and Patty.
Tumblr media
For Spot, warm, bright colours were tried out as well as colours to match Patty. 1 and 2 seemed to fit Spot the most. 1 was chosen as the colours complemented Patty’s colours and was bright and cheery.
Tumblr media
Patty wears pajamas for the entire TVC, since she is a lonely, depressed character, blues and dulls colours were used. 1 and 2 look too saturated and the ones with darker tops makes Patty’s hair blend into her clothes. 3 was chosen because it is not too dull or too bright and doesn’t blend into her skin or hair.

TVC Project Entry 11
This is Patty. She’s been living by herself for awhile and has become lonely and a little depressed. She is also pretty bad at cleaning up after herself, in other words she is exactly who needs Spot 2.0.
Tumblr media
This is Patty’s finalised design. I’ve purposely design her with a droopy, bottom-heavy shape. Below is the pre-production art for Patty.

This is the finalised design for the product. This is Spot 2.0, a high-tech, cleaning companion created by Sothis Labs, a company that specialises in robots. Back story: Spot 2.0 was named after the company’s CEO’s dog, Spot, hence the 2.0 in the product’s name.
Tumblr media
Here we see Spot with two hair variations. After some thought the version without the hair cover his eyes was chosen as Spot is a warm, friendly character. His eyes shouldn’t be covered or hidden.

Above we see Spot’s arsenal of cleaning tools. A vacuum, broom, feather duster and dust pan. I’ve drawn different views of each tool and where the tools on Spot can be found.

TVC project Entry 9
I’ve done research into environment and props. I would definitely need to be drawing big messes and piles of trash so I looked up references of garbage dumps and hoarder homes. Below and the studies I drew.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The film will be taking place in one environment, Patty’s room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Below is the final environment design
Tumblr media
Patty has only recently started living alone, as she is not used to cleaning up herself and never has anyone over, she  lets her room fall to squalor. Her room is rented and consists of furniture that came with the room, an old arm chair, a basic bed, a very old TV and a plant (which Patty never waters).
The types of messes in Patty’s room are 1. clothes strewn about 2. empty food containers 3. old study books 4. miscellaneous trash (cardboard boxes, plastic bags, used tissue, etc.
Tumblr media
After cleanup all clothes are put away, books are stacked neatly and all disposable trash has been bagged and ready to be taken out.

TVC project entry 7
For the storyboard, I went through multiple different plots and versions. I thought about what kind of character would need a product that cleans and is cute, and how would I go about advertising such a product. I settled on a character that was slobbish, clumsy, lazy and lonely. Below is the finalized and cleaned up storyboard, updated with the character designs (as the original storyboard was due before the character design).
Tumblr media
1. At the start of the TVC, Patty is introduced snoring loudly in bed. We can immediately get a sense that she is a lazy character.
2. In this shot Patty ever so slowly gets up.
3. Some trash is visible in the background.
4. Patty turns her head to look around the room as the camera pans out to...
5. ...To reveal the huge mess that is her room.
6. In the next shot Patty is standing,
Tumblr media
7. Patty is making her way through the trash.
8. Which proves difficult as she trips over some garbage
9. And falls face first into a magazine.
10. Patty picks up the magazine and takes a closer look
11. Close up of Spot’s ad in the magazine.
12. Immediately in the next there is a large shift in music and everything starts moving faster here. A box with Spot’s picture (the same as in the ad) in dropped.
Tumblr media
13. Patty’s arms reach in.
14. Here Patty is holding spot and inserting batteries.
15. Spot is functional! He licks his new owner’s face.
16. Spot gets to work, making use of his broom-tail to sweep, his vacuum and one of his arms to fold clothes.
17. Patty is impressed with Spot’s work.
18. This shot matches the previous wide-shot where the camera panned out. Here there is no camera movement, but we see the room in full.
Tumblr media
19. Patty picks Spot up and kisses his cheek.
20. The animation ends with an iris out.
21. In the very end is a black screen with Spot’s face, brand name, etc.
