Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw
Isn’t it incredible how the Fast and Furious series originally started as a bit of a cult film about car racing? Fast forward 15 years later and there’s been 8 films that have progressed to the cast saving the world. It’s mad how much the series has changed and honestly, I love it. I’ll confess, I’m a bit of a snob about films. Especially big blockbusters like the superhero films. All that CGI but there’s nothing really entertaining about them. Fast and Furious is on a whole different level. I love how insanely crazy the stunts are, I love how odd the storyline is, I love how mad the action sequences are. Hobbs and Shaw did not disappoint.
Basically, Statham’s sister, Vanessa Kirby, aka Hattie, is MI6. She ‘stole’ some evil serum that Idris Elba is after. Elba is part of this terrorist organization that controls the media and convinces everybody that Hattie has turned bad. Johnson and Statham, aka, Hobbs and Shaw, have to track her down. Now Hobbs and Shaw dislike each other, but they have to team up to save the world from this deadly virus, and save Hattie from dying. It’s your usual deadly virus and here’s two bald guys saving the world.
So many things work great in this movie. The chemistry between Johnson and Statham works well together, although at times the insults hurled at each other can get a bit repetitive. But for the whole it’s funny and is what drives the movie forward. The action sequences are incredible, not just because how insane they are, but for it’s choreography too. Fast and Furious have always had decent villains, Evans in 6, Statham in 7, Theron in 8 and now Elba in this. It’s rare to have films where the bad guy has such a lead role but F&F has managed to do that consistently. There is also a few out of this world action shots where I was pissing myself in the cinema. Dwayne literally holds onto a chopper so that it doesn’t escape. Then there’s ANOTHER FUCKING HEADBUTT!!!!!
There’s only a few things that I felt were a bit iffy about it. Like I said before, whilst the chemistry between Johnson and Statham was great, the insults finally started to drag. It probably took them too long to realise that if they worked together they could probably beat up the bad guy. Other than that, I can’t complain.
4/5 This was a great piece of cinema escapism. And yes, it’s great to see some realistic cinema now and again, does anything really beat gunfights, car chases and people being beat the shit up. I think not.
