Only discovered some 30 years ago in 1984, the Chengjiang Maotianshan Shales is the most diverse faunal fossil assemblage of all the Burgess Shale like deposits representing the period known as the Cambrian Explosion. It is also some 10 million years older than the Burgess Shale.
