56 YEARS AGO - from Mariam
My sister is in charge of the elevator art for the apartment where she lives. Every day she puts a new saying on each elevator, sometimes funny, sometimes thoughtful.
When she read “This n That – Mariam’s Stories” she told me. “Boy, I found some good ones to use for my project.”
What was she talking about? So I checked my book and sure enough, I found truisms that would be added to her elevator.
Here’s a couple from my father’s page: There’s Nothing so easy but that it becomes difficult when done with reluctance” and the one I used in a story in this book: “The greatest sin is feeling sorry for yourself.”
Which brings me up to Countdown. Four more days for the special price on TNT – four dollars discount. The introductory price ends on October 21st. Here’s a link to all of my books and showing this discounted price of $8.22 for This n That. https://amzn.to/36fWoQO
My goal for the next book, “The Westward Ho Story” is in time for Christmas. I have much of the basics but am doing further research with newspaper articles. And I’m like the kid in the candy factory. All of the history in those years and I must limit myself to what went on at the Westward Ho.
When I saw this article I knew I wanted to share it right away. It gives the scene of political campaigns fifty-six years ago on October 11, 1964.
AN EDITORIAL
Welcome LBJ & Barry
In what surely ranks as an ironic twist in this
political campaign, both President Lyndon B.
Johnson and his Republican opponent, Barry Gold-
water, are in Phoenix today.
What is doubly ironic is that both are here on
non-political visits . . . or at least as non-political
as any visit can be during an election campaign.
LBJ, who is passing through on his way to cam-
paign in California, announced that he wanted to
stop off just long enough to greet old friends and
attend church. And Senator Goldwater makes a
non-political speech tonight at a Heard Museum
benefit.
Phoenix is proud to host both men – Lyndon B.
Johnson, both because he is the President of the
United States and because he is a longtime neigh-
bor and friend; and Barry Goldwater, because
he is the Republican spokesman and because he
is Arizona’s favorite political son.
We hope both men enjoy their brief stay here in
the desert before hitting the campaign trail once
again. And although we realize that Nov. 3 is
only just around the corner, we are pleased that
both weary campaigners found time to pay us a
visit.
We hope that, no matter what the outcome next
month, both men will return to Arizona often.

At 93, I’m still climbing the stepladder. And here’s hoping I’ll be able to climb up there to add the next book, which I’m working on right now. “The Saga of the Westward Ho.”

Here’s the fifth one for your bookshelf
THIS n THAT – Mariam’s Stories
Available on Amazon and Kindle

Mariam looks back over her 92 years and wants to leave a legacy for her family that follows.
By telling her stories, she leaves a picture of her times. She tells of her struggles to publish and her excitement over a success.
These were all published in small magazines in those early years – adult fiction with a happy ending, pre-teen stories to show the way to go, and children’s adventures set in an Arizona landscape. (Tim and the HoHoKam).
PHOENIX magazine and the Arizona Republic printed her stories of humor and travel.
Much is included that was not for publication. Mariam’s long letter to great-granddaughter Talia describes the growing up years during a depression and war times. She has added a story by her mother, “How I Met Mr. Right.” From her father’s many writings, she chose his “Religious Percepts.” To have a word from the next generation she added grandson Chris’s comments on “Color blindness.”
If you don’t look at anything else, open up to Section Five – a top favorites! A time machine takes you back to the 14th century and fictional-facts about family survival in Heilbronn, Germany.
Sister Nancy might recommend: A trip to Lookout Mountain in South Carolina and the two sisters are in the middle of a Revolutionary War battle. Are they in 2014 or 1780?
Even more – Blogs, flying, NextDoor and “The Greatest Sin.” She hopes you will find a story to enjoy – and even remember.
p.s. On the front cover I’m sitting on Hadrian’s Wall, built in A.D. 122, Britain’s protection against the wild Scots.
