-damn the cartoon wasn't kidding about all that backstory being chapter 1

-Master Subhodi doubted the Monkey King's resolve. The Monkey King is filled with DETERMINATION

-awww, so that's where he gets his name

-ngl, i love linguistics explanations. so much nuance

-... okay I... tell me I have brainrot but I'm p sure if I understand at least some of the nuance here his name can mean "baby boy's too smart for his own good"

-oh, wow, it's over? welp, guess that means more next time!

Still in chapter 1

-I find it very funny that the Handsome Monkey King took it upon himself to steal someone's clothes and practice acting like a human

-philosophy on mortal lives, very beautiful imagery in the language here

-"Well I haven't found any immortals yet... maybe they're across this ocean! I mean, they're somewhere, right?"

-"Guy singing a song saying he's immortal! FOUND ONE!"

-"ha no i'm not immortal"

"You were JUST SINGING ABOUT IT"

"I'm just a woodcutter friend i learned it off my neighbor"

-short interlude for buddhism and filial piety

-Neighbor happens to live on a nearby immortal mountain (it has an epithet and everything!)

-Student: (leaving out the front door of secret cultivation sect): who is making all these happy not-gonna-die noises out here-- Monkey King: IMMORTAL STUDENT BRING ME TO YOUR TEACHER

Student: yeah, sure, he sent me out here to get... I guess you... anyway

Finally reading chapter 1

okay life really needs to stop doing what it's doing and let me research disproportionately to silly fandom fun

(to couch expectations: this is primarily for my own notekeeping but I figure others would want this)

-so, totally random generation of a monkey god there, huh. totally random confluence of sacred and auspicious shapes, numbers, and celestial influences on just this one rock

-the eye-lasers. somehow, expecting them did not prepare me for the details

-so heaven had his number from day 1, huh

-knowing what little I do know that makes the brushoff of this boring monkey so much fuckin' funnier

-playin' with the wildlife and fellow monkeys oh my god why do I find this so cute

So i was reading journey to the west for fandom reasons (lmk my beloved) and like six headcanons in i realized i had to work hard to have so little shame

So--do you, like many creatives, have an attention span that means a hundreds of pages long story feels like scaling a damn cliff? Do you want someone else to read it and give you the highlights relevant to your fandom, specifically? Do you want someone you can yell questions to anonymously who won't judge you for the pettiness of your wants in the face of historically renowned literature?
