lefou is closeted in every verse except ouat & galavant
because i spent too much damn time researching homsexuality in the 18th century to have it be brushed aside. even condoning it could earn you prison time or get you shipped off to the asylum
life. was. not. pleasant. for. homsexuals. who. were. not. part. of. the. gentry. or. royalty.
i’m not even going to acknowledge any claims that it was ok or acceptable for a man of jacques’ position. if he were a member of the royal family he’d be just fine until the revolution– but– spoilers. given batb takes place after the seven year’s war, that puts our timeline at least after 1767. which means sodomy will still be illlegal for another quarter century, at the most.
even if the prince revoked the sodomy law that doesn’t mean the villagers wouldn’t take things into their own hands.
the only reason he’s out in his ouat verse is due to misthaven being a fantasy realm of acceptance and equality. even so he didn’t come ‘out’ until he was in storybrooke. it took several sessions of therapy with dr hopper while under the curse to come to terms with his identity.
the reason why he’s out in galavant verse is due to that series being fictionalized around the 13th century with an actual gay tavern in canon.

isle!lefou headcanons
lefou is the most melodramatic uncle– he’s the sort who probably pretended to be dead whenever his nephews tried to wake him up.
he’s prone to making all the dad jokes– yet it’s somehow endearing when he does it.
he’d give a kid the clothes off his back– and has on more than one occasion.
at first, folks took advantage of his charity. some might have believed it to be a ruse– but many of the villains on the isle care at least a bit about their children. so they let lefou do his thing. he’s pretty much a glorified babysitter.
he loves to sing to the toddlers– he teaches them a modified version of the gaston song.
given his fall out with gaston, it’s unlikely the two would ever be friends again. gaston’s ego prevents him from properly apologizing to lefou, and lefou has learned the hard way that he deserves better.
he tries to write to stanley, who still lives in aruadon. he hasn’t moved on to dating anyone because his heart belongs to his heart-haired darling.
he truly believes he deserves to be punished, despite his change of heart during the raid on the castle. he was gaston’s sidekick and sees this as reparations for what he allowed happen to maurice.
despite being quite small, he’s learned how to defend himself pretty well. being gaston’s punching bag for so many years has left him extremely flexible. he can take a punch and throw one back just as quickly.
even if invited to return to aruadon– he doubts he could. the children of the isle need him– he’s the one good thing in this wasteland. he wouldn’t leave without knowing the children were free, too.
HE IS A CINNAMON ROLL. PROTECT HIM.

finestprize‌:
starter for @mywhataguy
“Do you serve anything other than alcoholic drinks here?” Jasmine asked the man behind the bar she was seated at
. Not exactly sure what I was expecting when I walked into this place. But Jasmine was starving and it seemed this establishment was the closest place in her vicinity. She figured she’d give it a shot but it seemed this bar really was only a bar. They must have food here? Right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“That depends on what you’re looking for.” The stocky male retorted, as he wiped down the bar top. “We’ve got water, soda, and non-alcoholic beverages if you’re lookin for those.” He waved a hand over his shoulder, glancing to a door that led to the back.
“If you want somethin’ simple, we make sandwiches and such at a fair price. Nothin’ too fancy, we’re not Granny’s.” She had a pretty tight grip on the diner industry here in Storybrooke-- not that anyone would ever really dare to compete against her.

lefou and aquaphobia
i feel terribly inspired to elaborate on lefou and his aquaphobia that i’ve touched on in this post, very breifly.
lefou never learned to swim [in pretty much every verse]. he’s never been terribly fond of water, but anything larger than a bath tub is right out. even in shallow water, he has issues.
he’s uncertain why water makes him so nervous and on edge– though in modern [and ouat] verse he’s diagnosed with aquaphobia– a fear of water.
should he happen to fall in a pond or lake [or pool], he’s prone to seizing up and being unable to do much except talk and scream for help– in some cases, even his voice fails him.
his fear of water likely stems from his issues with his asthma. he already has a hard enough time breathing when he gets worked up– and the idea of going underwater [somewhere no one can breathe] sends him into a frenzy. he’s terrified of possibly drowning and refuses to go into water, even to hunt game or fish.
with the right companionship, however, he might be able to curb his fear or gain some control over his acute reaction.
if asked to go swimming, he’ll politely decline and watch from the shore.

Do you headcanon Fou as illiterate?
Tumblr media
I headcanon him as slightly dyslexic. He never really learned to read well because letters became jumbles of confusing symbols as a kid. In a time period before mental health awareness– he’s sort of stuck with a raw deal.
An illiterate person wouldn’t know the word ‘illiterate’– but someone who tried and failed attempts at literacy might. I also imagine he has slight vision problems– partially due to how cute he looks in glasses, but also based on the fact that Josh Gad himself is also slightly vision impaired.
So the combo of his mild dyslexia and vision problems make reading an arduous task. He’d rather just– know his letters and that’s it.
However, post-film– I think he learns how to read properly. Likely alongside little Chip or possibly thanks to Belle. He discovers a love for books and a flair for writing– putting down on paper a slightly fictionalized version of what happened to the town of Villeneuve.
Though there’s more on that HERE.

“Unlike you, I’ve got standards.” He lashed right back, rolling his eyes. Granted, he adored his verbal spats with Aladdin-- but he couldn’t well let him know that, now could he? They’d been playing this game of cat and mouse for years now. It would be a shame for them to go and end it all of a sudden.

modern fou is an insufferable flirt.
he’s out and proud and doesn’t give a damn who knows. this sweet french-jewish boi served in the army but won’t let the past haunt him. his best friend is a massive douchecanoe but jacques cannot keep himself from helping the guy out and picking him up when he’s down.
after coming to america he strikes it big on broadway and is one of the brightest up-and-coming stars to strut the stage. he loves singing and writes songs in his spare time– even selling a few jingles here and there.
if you need someone to help you see the bright side of a rainy day– look no further.

lefou and education
this is a rebloggable version of my headcanon post for my lefou roleplay blog
so in canon [at least the 2017 film] we have a lefou who is illiterate. whether or not he had some form of education as a child remains to be seen– but either way, by adulthood he’s pretty much forgotten how to spell things. he may be able to recognize simple words and letters, but that’s about it.
regardless– he writes an entire song about gaston. he commits it to memory. being illiterate he cannot write it down. yet he’s able to compose this tune, keep to the rhyming scheme, and recite it from memory. it’s possible he’s done this on several occasions, and spends his free time thinking up new lyrics.
he’s creative and clever– despite lacking formal knowledge about the world around him. with a knack for picking up new skills with relative ease he takes to information like a fish to water. once he’s provided a means of understanding [ie: learning how to read and write] he’ll only grow more intelligent. in fact, he grows to become quite the intellectual– a genius in his own right with a love of music and storytelling.
he begins to compose and write songs [possibly working with the maestro?], writes stories and tells the tale of la belle et la bete. his creativity blossoms and he partakes in all it has to offer. he writes about the war– what he learned from it as a soldier. he writes about gaston– finally putting all he felt to pen and paper.
he writes love letters to his partner– but never signs them. they’re hidden in various parts of their home, places he knows his lover will eventually find them. he writes sonnets and songs. he allows himself to be swept up in romance and expresses all he feels in writing.
after he passes, his letters are gathered by a family member and published. centuries later they’re being studied in schools alongside shakespeare, blake, and frost. his grave and the village itself become a hotspot for tourists. his life is studied and his legacy secured.
the simple act of education leads to his immortality.
