Men's Fashion In The 1970s
In the 1970s, men's fashion became a bold reflection of cultural change from the conservative and lifeless colors. To a decade of louder, freer, and more expressive fashion. Men's fashion in the 1970s, was influenced by bold color choices, wide pants to hippie culture, disco, rock, and punk. This era was a balance between formal and casual style. This week we’ll be exploring trendy fashion choices that defined men’s style throughout the 1970s.
Bold Colors & Patterns
Men’s fashion in this era went through a vibrant transformation, embracing bold colors and striking patterns reflecting hat the spirit of self-expression. The 1970s fashion was first influenced by the Peacock Revolution of the late 1960s. From this, men confidently adopted styles that were once considered flamboyant or unorthodox during the time. The clothing design embraced vibrant hues, extravagant patterns, with experimentation on a wide range of fabrics. This highlights the cultural change towards individuality and creative freedom of the decade.

Flared Trousers & Bell-Bottoms
Bell bottoms and flared trousers became popular in the late 1960s and continued into the 1970s as they gained significance. To which later on, became a signature and a defining look for men in the decade. The wide legged pants with dramatic flares starting from the knees down; was a fashion statement and a symbol of rebellion against traditional norms of the time. These styled pants were popularized by musicians, film, and the growing disco culture. These types of pants were often styled with form fitting shirts (turtlenecks, ruffled dress shirts, or a bright colored button up.) In terms of footwear, platform shoes or heeled boots were common worn with the bottoms.

Hippie Culture
By the early 1970s, men’s hippie fashion evolved into a distinctive style that had a deep connection to nature and individuality. Men during the hippie era, commonly wore tie dye shirts, fringe vest/jackets, and bell bottom jeans. Accessories like beaded necklaces, leather headbands, and round sunglasses were added to the look. Sandals, moccasins, and leather boots were some of the footwear choices. Hippie culture, was a form of self expression and a way for individuals to embody the free spirit of the time.

Disco
The disco wave brought a bold change in men’s fashion, which was defined by glamour, celebration, and flamboyance. Disco fashion embraced shiny fabrics, dramatic ruffled shirts, and statement pieces such as platform shoes. While jumpsuits, hot pants, and high-heeled boots reflected a confident and gender fluid aesthetic. Disco wasn’t just about clothing, it was about performance, self-expression, and making an unforgettable impression under the shimmering lights of the dance floor.

Glam Rock & Punk Style
During this time of the decade was influenced by artists like David Bowie and the Sex Pistols, who push boundaries with their bold style and music. The fashion included metallic jumpsuits, leather jackets, skinny jeans, and bold accessories, showcasing individuality and rebellion. The gam rock and punk style was another societal change like the former eras hippie culture and disco. This style allowed others to embraced identity, creativity, and resistance against societal expectations.

The 1970s was a transformative period in men’s fashion, breaking away from conservative styles and embracing diversity. This decade continues to inspire fashion, giving way to freedom of expression, and embracing bold stylistic choices. Thank you for reading this weeks post!

Hello everyone! Last week, we talked about 70’s inspired music festival outfits and so this week, we are staying on the theme! There are so many ways to describe the decade of the 1970’s. Drama, creativity, and change are the best ways to describe it because these characteristics defined the relationship between the two biggest aspects of the decade: music and fashion. Both of the industries that seemed to have no connection were actually thriving and feeding off of each other during this iconic time. This was because the fashion was influencing the music and the music was influencing the fashion. With that being said, let’s explore how the musical revolutions impacted the fashion world.
Music meets nonconformism
The folk and rock sounds of Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan became key representations of peace, love, and acceptance. Boho chic was the result of the music and even powerful designers such as Halston and Yves Saint Laurent contributed pieces to this movement. Aspects of this style included peasant blouses, bell-bottoms, and layering jewelry.

The hysteric glamour
Disco music was all about feeling good and dancing the night away. Icons that represented this ethos include Cher and David Bowie who were not afraid to get dramatic with their fashion looks. The popular pieces that resulted include satin dresses, metallic fabric, and tight pants.

The rejection of glamour
Punk and rock music was all about sticking it to the man and refusing to conform to the idea of how everyone should look and act. Artists such as The Ramones and The Sex Pistols were primary examples of refusal to conform. The started a kind of revolution around the world of dressing more punk and designers such as Vivienne Westwood truly believed in it. The style quickly became that of leather jackets, band t-shirts, and ripped items of clothing.

Bending gender ideologies
The image that many artists were creating was that just because things have always been this way, doesn’t mean that they have to stay that way. The icon that was Freddie Mercury was a strong believer in dressing for how you feel, not based on your gender. Platform boots and glitter were now on the rise as a result. Fashion quickly became something that was fluid and it still remains so.

The political influence
Songs that were released by Neil Young and The Clash played a huge role in shifting the political landscape of the 1970’s. Women began fighting for equality and as a result, they used their fashion choices to get people thinking. Choices such as pantsuits and leather jackets were not usually worn on women until now, it empowered women to fight for what they wanted.

Fashion and music were harmonious in the 1970’s. Fashion empowered people to express their true emotions whether it was soft and “feminine” or grunge and punk. This is part of why the decade is still so relevant today, we are still fighting for our futures. Thank you for reading this week's post! We will see you next week where we will be talking about the top trends for men in the 1970’s. See you later!

The 1970s was a remarkable decade for fashion that left an incredible mark in general. However, it was a revolutionary decade for denim. The fabric has transformed the fashion trend of the from a utilitarian style into a symbol of rebellion, freedom, and self-expression. Hence, the hippie movement. Flared and bell-bottom jeans is known for it's defined silhouette, with dramatic flares starting at the knee. Today, the combo has some modern updates including mini skirts with oversized denim jackets or denim jumpsuits layered with corduroy outerwear. This creating retro vibes with modern day twist.

Fashionable Evolution: The Transition from Hippie to Disco
The transformation between the two styles of hippie to disco is such a seemingly dramatic shift. We often associate both styles with the 1970’s, but fail to actually realize that these styles existed within the same decade. The change represents the dramatic shift in culture and broader societal issues that were occurring at the time. Each fashion style is the mark of its own distinct set of wants and needs from le freak to c’est chic!
The Hippie Movement (Early 1970’s)
The entire premise of the hippie movement was to reject conformity and embrace individuality; And the clothes really reflected these values. This era welcomed flowing and free-spirited styles that reflected a deeper connection to nature, music, and peace. Some key aspects in their clothing are:
Tie-dye and bright coloring: We often see this as the stereotypical hippie. The vibrant and psychedelic colors represented how they embraced music and the true authentic self

Embellishment pieces and fringe: Lingering in popularity today, fringe was often added to pants, bags, and jackets to add an edge to the pieces. Along with things like beads and embroidery, there was a sort of homage being payed to Native Americans as many hippies respected their natural ways

Sandals: Many hippies opted to wear sandals or even walk barefoot as it was seen as more natural and connected them to the Earth

Loose Clothing: Classic styles such as flowing pants, bell-bottom jeans, and loose skirts were extremely popular during this time. This is a result of these certain products usually being made of linen, to avoid supporting mass production

Disco Fashion (Mid to Late 1970’s)
Disco represented wealth and a desire to flaunt your glamour. While a huge contrast to hippie lifestyle is present, the disco lifestyle was all about embracing night-life, dancing, and as well music. The hippie movement was more about mute tones and showcasing under consumption while the disco life was all about performing for an audience on the dance floor. Major aspects of clothing included:
Platform shoes: This specific style was essential to any outfit, man or woman. Especially those with overstated heels that were perfect for a night out on the town.

Bodysuits: Another unisex staple for the culture, these pieces often included flashy patterns and metallic coloring to make a bold statement

Mini skirts: Disco fashion, as you can tell, was all about the drama and that was exactly the desired effect of the mini skirt. There was no better way to start a conversation than by showing some skin

Bold accessories: Accessories such as big sunglasses, funky belts, and chunky jewelry ensured that you would be noticed on the dance floor.

While the hippie era was a movement that adored simplicity, the existence of disco and night life really indulged in a more luxurious way of self-expression. It seems as though the switch between fashion choices represented the need to give into consumer desires and tendencies. While those in the early 1970’s respected modesty, disco represented the desire for something more. This transition definitely was a reflection of the different cultural, economic, and political climates that people had to face.
Thank you all for reading! We’ll see you next week <3

The 70’s fashion Icons: From Farrah Fawcett to David Bowie
The 70’s are always remembered for the iconic music, movies, and above all, fashion. We still love and replicate what the hottest celebrities of the time were wearing to this day. Today, I will be taking you on a journey through the fashion icons and celebrities that had the biggest, as well as lasting, impact on style in our modern era.
Diana Ross:
Diana Ross pioneered the movement of disco styling in fashion. Her essentials to her ensembles were silk gowns, platform heels, and often fur coats. We have recently seen a resurgence in silk gowns and platform shoes, but fur coats have been a staple ever since Diana Ross stepped on the scene.

Blondie:
Debbie Harry (AKA Blondie), brought an edgy look to city, punk fashion. Major elements of her style included leather jackets, mini skirts, distressed clothing, and often band T-shirts. We still see all of these items worn by modern fashion icons such as Devon Lee Carlson and Bella Hadid.

Olivia Newton-John:
Olivia Newton-John had a much more soft and feminine look to her. Key elements of her style included floral print dresses, pastel coloring, elegant blouses, and ribbon styling. Especially with Spring quickly approaching, we will surely see a resurgence in this style. But back in 2023, it became the newest trend to add bows on your clothing, which many contributed the rise of this trend to miss Sandy Dee.

David Bowie:
David Bowie is world renowned for his pioneering in dressing for androgyny, rather than a specific gender. David Bowie mainly held his focus on components such as bold coloring, glittery fabrics, and even dramatic makeup. Many felt more comfortable to bend the lines of gender and simply dress to their own liking and comfort. This movement is just as prevalent today as those in the non-binary community have stated that they felt spoken to, thank to David Bowie.

Mick Jagger:
Mick Jagger is also referred to as the King of Rock and Roll. He is most known for his flamboyant elements of animal prints, leather/velvet pants, and platform boots. We have recently seen a resurgence of cheetah print, as well as leather pants. The past effecting the future is a part of fashion that we know all too well.

I hope you all enjoyed this breakdown of 70’s fashion icons and their effects on fashion/style today. Thank you and see you next time!
