When the adult showed up in Lord of the Flies, the prepubescent boys went "holy shit, what are we doing, we're just kids" and became traumatized lost kids once again but when adults showed up in Yellowjackets, the girls came out of their savage state only to quickly slip back down again cuz that's what they were comfortable with. Lottie came into her own in the wilderness by tapping into her primal self and listening to her delusions. She doesn't want to go back to the civilized world of psych meds and rigid control where she's a "nutcase" and not powerful and revered. I think season 4 is going to be a civil war between the ones who want to go back home (Gen, Akilah, Mel, Travis, etc.) and the ones who want to stay cuz the wilderness lets them be themselves. This is how the 12-ish survivors wind up as 7 by the pilot episode. It'll be the ultimate game of survival. Loser gets served on a spit.

A lot of people don’t really understand how psychosis works, and especially how a psychotic episode resulting in murder happens. But what Lottie did meets the genuine legal bar for insanity, let alone the moral one
I'm so sick of people just straight up blaming Lottie for killing that man without realizing she's in a psychotic episode. She isn't in her right mind at all. We see her slipping into psychosis at the end of ep 6, and that psychosis continues into ep 7. She is not thinking clearly. In her head, she's doing what's right. In her head she's helping them. She isn't being selfish, she isn't intentionally trying to hurt the others. A lot of people are viewing her killing Edwin through the lens of the other girls, who are unaware of her mental illness. They have no idea she's going through psychosis, but we as viewers do. We know she's completely out of it, and is not thinking clearly or rationally.

watching the yellowjackets plan how they were going to drive Kodi to the shit cliff during the chase, as someone who grew up a deer hunter, sent chills down my spine. they used the same fundamentals. drive the prey to where you want it, whoop and holler to communicate with the other people driving and to disorient your prey. this was the most methodical example in my eyes so far of how they strip their victims of their humanity. they’ve gotten it down to a science

just went back to watch all of vans near death experiences after “you never really cheated death, it was always an even trade” and found Jackie saying “I guess we’re even now” after pushing van out the way of the planes propellers like oh these writers are evil

thinking about how yellowjackets characters have very clear animal symbolism and jackie has been the rabbit since episode 1 but jackie is also a stand-in for society. after the girls lose their faith (laura lee) the first thing to go is any and all societal norms they were still abiding by. jackie represented, to them and to the narrative, regular high-school life, being a normal teenager with normal teenager problems, and as such she was unable to survive in the wilderness. that's all very surface-level yj analysis, but i'm thinking realllly hard right now about how akilah is constantly clinging to rabbits this season. to the point where it's basically become her animal. she is seen 90% of the time holding a baby bunny. and she's also the one who's giving the girls hope of going home. of going back to normalcy. last season she was still studying for finals. this season she goes back to the cave after the first vision, but keeps returning because she got a vision of the ability to go home. she is overjoyed in a high-like way when she returns because she thinks they can go home. she's become the new symbol of going home and thus she is always, literally, clinging to rabbits
and how that's probably not going to end well for her

everyone in yellowjackets is fucked up because they had to be cannibals in the woods except for callie who's fucked up because she didn't get to be a cannibal in the woods

the absolute ruthlessness of soccer is maybe not really addressed enough as the reason why the girls are who they are. the nature of it is shown a little in the pilot with the allie thing but after that its all very subtle. like personally i have seen bodies stamped on, players flipped on their heads, ankles ripped open by studs. allies injury was crazy but it wouldnt be the first time i've see a hard tackle break someones leg on a soccer field. these arent just high school girls. these are some of the most driven, ambitious, ruthless girls in the state. they had to be because of the sport they played. like they were going to nationals !! they were set to play it at the very highest level for their age group literally because they had these traits. lottie and shauna bodying the fuck out of people? well obviously, cb and cdm, they're both defensive players. knocking someone down hard enough to leave them gasping is second nature. and tbh the other positions arent any softer, just different. soccer encourages you to hold grudges, despise losing, and channel your anger into aggression. though of course the idea is you compartmentalise, you step back over the white line and its over, its safe and civil again. but the wilderness is just the field, there is no safe and civil, so they are constantly in that state of heightened drive and ruthlessness they've nutured.
