Remember that infamous scene about Ginny having nice skin? It’s actually insane that the whole bit about Ginny being "smart, funny, attractive, and having nice skin” is said casually while Harry is literally following Malfoy’s name on the Marauder’s Map. And right after that, if you remember, Harry literally goes to sleep still staring at the Map, left open, watching Draco’s little dot move around until it finally disappears.
And what’s even wilder is that all that talk about Ginny only exists in the movie . But Harry using the Map to spy on Draco Malfoy? That’s canon.
I still hate the movie for not showing us just how obsessed Harry actually was with Draco that year.

You’d think that in the last book we’d get that classic moment where the protagonist swoops in to rescue his beloved from a tragic death in some big heroic act — y’know, reinforcing their bond and proving his undying love for her. But JKR’s Ginny doesn’t need saving by any man, because she’s badass like that. So Harry gets his big hero moment without Ginny.
Instead, he risks his own life against the cursed fire that can’t be put out and devours everything it touches —TO SAVE DRACO MALFOY. Damn, you can literally see how the whole thing fits the image of the knight pulling the damsel in distress onto his horse. I cannot deal with all this unintentional Drarry.
Sure, Goyle and Ron were there too (playing the “NO HOMO” alarm role for all of Harry’s behavior), but we all know Harry flew straight for Draco without thinking twice.
Y’know that “don’t tell, show” rule? It’s wild how many times the narrative tells us Hinny is amazing and real — but Harry’s own actions keep showing us Drarry.

Crabbe and Goyle were both wearing green; they resembled moss-colored boulders, and neither of them, Harry was pleased to see, had managed to find a partner. — HP GoF – Chapter 23: The Yule Ball
Ok, hear me out—what if Crabbe and Goyle actually went as each other’s dates? I know, wild! But the thought just popped into my head while I was reading this, and honestly it feels like exactly the kind of detail Harry would totally miss. Besides, he was paying more attention to Malfoy, who unfortunately had managed to get a date for the Ball.
I have no idea if anyone’s ever written about it before (not that I’m out here shipping Crabbe/Goyle lol), but it could be a really fun background detail in a fic.
They were walking right behind Draco and Pansy in a line of couples. Sure, they could’ve just been Draco’s usual bodyguards, but it’s an interesting idea when you think of the implications.
Or, alternatively to any romance…
it could’ve even been Draco’s idea:
Draco: I need you two covering my back. Crabbe and Goyle: But we didn’t get dates. Draco: Hmm… what about that Bulstrode girl? Crabbe: She already has a date. Draco: Really? I’m shocked. Well… then just go with each other. Crabbe and Goyle:*exchange uncertain looks* Is that even allowed? Draco: I say it is. Done! Draco: Come on, we can’t let Potter win at the Ball. Goyle: …Wait, there’s going to be a competition at the Ball? Crabbe: *shrugs*

On my first read of HP, I remember one of the things I really liked was Fleur proving Molly (and Ginny) wrong. At the time I was pretty naive and thought the issue was simply that the two Weasley women didn’t believe Fleur truly loved Bill. But rereading the series a bit older, I realized just how prejudiced they actually were toward her.
On the surface, Molly and Ginny could disguise their bias as “concern for Bill” or brush it off as Fleur being “snobby,” but at its core it was jealousy. Fleur is beautiful, feminine, from a higher social class, French, half-Veela. The way Molly and Ginny made fun of her (her looks, her mannerisms, her accent, even her blood heritage) was way too much for characters who see themselves as so virtuous. Let's be honest... If those exact same comments had come out of Draco or Pansy’s mouths, they’d be immediately read as bigotry.
Meanwhile Fleur was in a foreign country, living with people she didn’t know well, in a place where she could feel she wasn’t really wanted. But she chose to be there out of love for Bill. And if you’ve ever stayed with people you’re not super close to, you know it’s easy to accidentally put your foot in your mouth sometimes without meaning to.
Molly and Ginny’s behavior wasn’t “concern for Bill.” It was because they felt threatened by Fleur’s beauty. Molly shows this jealousy by trying to reassert her own beauty through new accessories and jewelry, while Ginny does it through mocking imitations and snide remarks. Harry even tries to argue that he doesn’t think Fleur is so bad, but Ginny shuts him down, intimidating him and making him feel embarrassed for even thinking that way. And honestly, I don’t even know what’s worse, Molly acting like a teenager, or Ginny pulling a full-on Regina George.
And no, this isn’t shitting on Molly or Ginny. It’s just an observation. One of the things that drew me into HP in the first place was how flawed the characters are. That’s what makes them human and believable. But it is concerning when flaws in the “good guys” aren’t acknowledged as flaws — especially when those flaws clearly show wrong and prejudiced behavior.
It’s beautiful when Molly and Fleur overcome that barrier of prejudice in the end.
wtffffff this is so unnecessarily mean. fleur suffered so much. and meanwhile her family was so sweet and warm towards their in-laws. literally what did she do to deserve this? you know what. given the hostility and passive aggression she faced im going to give her a pass to do whatever she wants. those rude comments she made about the burrow being boring? those were her emotional support rude comments. if anything she held back.
no but seriously. this is pretty messed up. wonder if part of the reason mrs weasley disapproved was some lowkey bigotry due to her veela heritage. i mean the initial assumption the family makes is that he just likes her because she's 'exotic' rather than because he's fallen in love with her as a person. (also out of universe jk rowling is so weird about women who are traditionally feminine but in ways she disapproves of). no wonder fleur was happy to stay at shell cottage in book 7 and not go back there for christmas.
#Harry Potter#fleur delacour#molly weasley#ginny weasley#Pointing out a character’s flaws or criticizing them isn’t wrong#what’s wrong is refusing to acknowledge those flaws as flaws#and hating real people for criticizing fictional characters.

This was such a delightful read. I loved following Draco and Harry in Rotten Apples, and also the Draco and Harry in Strawberry Fields (Bitter Bites), they’re different, but equally amazing. The addition of Bella and Riddle in Rotten Apples was unexpected and really interesting, and I absolutely love the way you wrote Ginny in both fics. I usually don’t read AUs, but this was a wonderful experience.
Please don’t stop. Your writing is so captivating.

Rotten Apples, 10/11
“I ought to go,” Draco murmured. Though it hurt to do so, he forced himself out of Harry’s arms. “My parents will be looking for me.”
“Of course.” Harry, like a gentleman, walked him to the bungalow door. Less like a gentleman, he proceeded to press Draco against that very same door and suck a pale, barely-there bruise into the sensitive spot of skin behind Draco’s ear. It was high enough on his neck to remain unnoticed to any nosy observers, so long as Draco kept it hidden behind his hair.
new chapter up for my A/B/O Victorian!England fic!! click here for the link :)))

I always picture Draco falling first and keeping it to himself, but even in scenarios where Harry’s the one who falls first, it doesn’t really matter, because I still see Harry being the one to make the first move. Whether it’s starting the first conversation, going in for the first kiss, or asking him out, it just feels like Harry would take the lead. Maybe that’s because I imagine one of Draco’s biggest hurdles in a relationship with Harry would be unlearning the belief that he doesn’t deserve it. (That said, I also love the idea of Draco suddenly kissing Harry and completely throwing him off balance.)
So what about you? Who do you think would act first?
I agree with this analysis completely. I also think that even if he knew that Harry had feelings for him, Draco would think that actually having a relationship would be unfeasible and would completely ruin Harry’s life. Like even once they have a relationship I think he imagines it’ll be something short term and hidden and even then he probably feels guilty about it because he thinks Harry will regret it later. He also probably finds it hard to believe that it’s happening - that Harry’s affection which he had so long desired and eventually given up on ever getting is actually his.
I think at some point he probably tries to break things off with Harry because he feels like Harry is being stupid and he doesn’t want to bring him to ruin. I mean he imagines that Harry’s friends will want to cut them off and just think what the press will say when they find out the chosen one is with a death eater. He doesn’t want to besmirch Harry’s reputation, and bring all that on him and he assumes Harry will want to end things anyway at some point or will regret it when it’s too late. Harry of course understands Draco perfectly so he’s not hurt or offended because he understands why Draco is doing it and it just makes him love him a little bit more
I imagine then Draco probably gives some whole speech about how of course he wants to be with Harry, but he won’t inflict on him what going public with their relationship would do to him - he loves him too much for that and Harry‘s big takeaway from that “is you love me” and then they end up bickering about it because of course Draco loves Harry that wasn’t the point and Harry isn’t taking this seriously dammit and Harry is like yeah of course I’m not taking it seriously; you’re being stupid. Harry’s like c’mon since when did I give a damn what the press says? Besides now that I’ve seduced you Rita Skeeter has lost her best source so really this is strategic.
You don’t understand Draco insists and he goes off in a huff because it’s killing him inside because of course he wants to be with Harry - it’s all he’s ever wanted really, since the age of 11. But he doesn’t want to see Harry slowly lose all the people he cares about because of Draco and have his life ruined - have everyone turn against him - because of Draco and then either leave him in the end or worse still stay with him and regret it or even not regret it but suffer. He can’t do that to Harry. He won’t. For once he’ll be selfless. Harry will get over it. It’s only Draco after all. He’ll find someone else. Someone better.
Harry decides to give him time to cool off. He’s not that worried. If anything he’s still riding high over Draco’s casual admission that he loves him. He tells Ron and Hermione what happened of course. And it’s Ron, shockingly, who has always been the most suspicious of the relationship and the most against Draco who heaves a deep sigh and goes “I suppose I have to go after the stupid git don’t I?” And before anyone can say anything, he’s levering himself up out of his chair and walking out the door.
And Ron finds Draco and he has a little talk with him. He tells him how he thought he wasn’t good enough for Hermione and how he wasted so much time being insecure and upset about that and pushing her away and how he caused her pain over it for nothing. because ultimately it wasn’t his decision. It’s not up to him whether there’s someone better out there for her. he’s the person that she wants and the thing that would make her happy is him being with her. So yeah, he and Draco are the same actually - both landed people way out of their league who are besotted and stupid enough to take them. They should be celebrating not moping.
And when Draco tries to insist that it’s not the same at all, that Ron of all people must know it’s not the same Ron just bulldozes right over him and says if he’s waiting for universal acclaim that’s not going to happen but if he thinks that the people who love Harry are gonna turn their backs on him just because he’s fallen for some pointy git then he has another thing coming. Draco can’t really think of an answer to that, but he still opens his mouth to try and Ron just gives him a look and advises him to shut up. And Draco…does.
He and Ron return to Harry together. Ron slouches in and grumpily gives Harry a long suffering look and grumbles that he “fixed it.” he and Hermione make their exit. And Harry doesn’t tell Draco that he loves him, but he tells him that he needs him and Draco understands that that’s the same. In the end, that’s all that really matters.
