I dont know how White fandom ppl will watch a movie or series with like a 99% nonwhite cast & a plot focusing on them & their culture, but instead will hyperfocus on the one or two White characters (often ones that are there specifically to be the villians and are racist) that are there and then not think that that's weird

Do you know how often I think about Ben showing Jack a tv and telling him ‘your fellow Americans re-elected George W. Bush- the Red Sox won the World Series’ ?

We already know Ben lies about everything. We know he lies even in jokes (‘my mother taught me’, ‘I’m a Pisces’) but this is especially interesting to me because not only is he trying to deceive Jack in general, he’s also enacting some performative American identity in order to get Jack to trust him.

I feel like this is easy to overlook because of the cultural setting in 2004- these are white writers with racist tendencies viewing their own show through the lens of American culture, with a primarily American audience.

But it just has me thinking… is Ben…culturally American? I would argue not. His connection to the country would be that he lived there for the start of his childhood, but that wasn’t that many years.

Is the Dharma Initiative American? Yes, but the society itself is pretty monolithic and acts on its own set of rules and hierarchies. Miles and Charlotte spent some time there as young children but left and grew up in other cultures- Ben didn’t. The same case could be made for Ethan but we see a lot less of him on screen, and we know that he also leaves the Island from time to time.

Ben’s performing and running a society of people based on- what I would presume to be- a combination of emulating culture from growing up in the Initiative & media he’s consumed. Plus some elements of how Widmore would’ve led the others and general Island lore concerning Jacob. And he’s so bad at it!

Imagine that! Imagine you’re so doomed by the narrative because not only were you abused as a child and told you were special when you weren’t really, but you also have no ground to stand on when it comes to social and cultural rules and acceptance.

Who can participate?

The event is open to anyone who ships Buffy x Giles, we only ask that you please follow the rules.

I'm not a shipper, but want to participate, can I still do the event?

Although we prefer this to be something for shippers, we welcome anyone who wants to take up the challenge, but please note, the fic must at least be Buffy x Giles friendly.
