to be honest, I think i’ve alreadly listened to this song about 80 times. i’m all for this new era of t&s

Tegan and Sara premiered their new single “Boyfriend” yesterday on Beats Radio, and Sara Quin talked with the host about the very personal track:
“It’s a pretty straightforward pop song about a relationship that I was getting into with a girl who had never dated a girl before and she had a guy, a boyfriend guy that she was sort of seeing, and we used to joke around that she was treating me like her boyfriend, and I was trying to get her to sort of you, you know, tie it down. I wanted her to make it official with me. I think that’s pretty relatable. Obviously, being gay, you know, the sort of bit of a gender twist in the song. I get that that it sometimes doesn’t seem immediately relatable to everybody whether they’re straight or gay or whatever but we’ve all been in that situation where we really like someone and we want to make it official, and they’re not ready.”
OK, this is too real. You’ll love it.

Hey everyone! REMEZCLA just published my convo with Gabby Rivera about her newest book, Juliet Takes a Breath, Latinx identities, and the importance of challenging ideas and building spaces that go above and beyond the frameworks and models that you’re given as a QPOC.
Juliet Takes a Breath is such an inspiring and important book, and I can’t stop gushing about it. Not only because I 100% relate to Juliet as a character, but because I also get so excited thinking about all of the young queer Latinas and queer youth of color that have ONE MORE brilliant and beautifully complex QUEER, FEMINIST LATINX PROTAGONIST(!!!) that they can relate to and see themselves reflected in. Gabby’s book is an actual dream come true. Also the book is funny as hell.
Check out the q&a and buy a copy of Juliet (link and info is at the bottom of the article).

Quote
A Litany for Survival For those of us who live at the shoreline standing upon the constant edges of decision crucial and alone for those of us who cannot indulge the passing dreams of choice who love in doorways coming and going in the hours between dawns looking inward and outward at once before and after seeking a now that can breed futures like bread in our children’s mouths so their dreams will not reflect the death of ours *** For those of us who were imprinted with fear like a faint line in the center of our foreheads learning to be afraid with our mother’s milk for by this weapon this illusion of some safety to be found the heavy-footed hoped to silence us For all of us this instant and this triumph We were never meant to survive. *** And when the sun rises we are afraid it might not remain when the sun sets we are afraid it might not rise in the morning when our stomachs are full we are afraid of indigestion when our stomachs are empty we are afraid we may never eat again when we are loved we are afraid love will vanish when we are alone we are afraid love will never return and when we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard nor welcomed but when we are silent we are still afraid. *** So it is better to speak remembering we were never meant to survive.

This article contains discussions of domestic violence and transantagonism. Discretion is advised. * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
“At 17, when Tamara told her mom of her decision to transition, she was swiftly kicked out of her home, forced to live on the streets and engage in sex work as a means for survival. Later, she developed an addiction to MDMA, popping five to 10 a week. That is, in addition to smoking weed and drinking. She says her substance abuse was a coping mechanism to help get her though her harsh reality. Eventually, Williams discovered she was HIV-positive when she was 22 after a stint in rehab for her drug addiction. And in the midst of all this, for three years she was involved in an emotionally and physically abusive relationship with a transgender man, who she says never accepted her for who she was. He wanted someone who physically looked like Rihanna, and she just wanted to be loved.”
[Photo description: Outdoors. Daytime. A black woman, Tamara Williams, leans against a black iron fence. She is holding an opened blue umbrella above her head and looking off to the left. In the background is the cityscape: trees, bushes, buildings, vehicles, and an orange construction cone.]

I did an in-depth q&a for Spark Mag with artist Lex Allen (along with WebsterX and Q the Sun). We talked about the writing process behind his newest song “Cream and Sugar,” creating the accompanying visuals, as well as free expression, duality, the intersections of race, gender and sexuality, and doing away with self-restriction.
Check it out!!

(AllanKingdom)
Fair to say that Allan Kingdom broke the fucking internet last night with his debut of Northern Lights. This is Kingdom’s first proper full-length release since 2014’s Future Memoirs. You might also remember his name from last year’s single “All Day,” where he worked in collaboration with Kanye West, Paul McCartney and Theophilus London.
Kingdom is noted as an Executive Producer on Northern Lights—along with Plain Pat and Jonathan Kaslow—which also features guest appearances by D.R.A.M., Gloss Gang, and Chronixx. This project is available for download on Allan Kingdom’s website (for FREE). You can also stream it here via Kingdom’s SoundCloud.
Northern Lights was definitely worth the nearly two year wait. #midwesthiphoptakeover2016
