On The Pitt there is such a thematic conversation between Robby and Abbot and Langdon as characters.
We meet Abbot first very grumpy and then on the roof. But ultimately he's the one whose got his shit together. He actually deals with stuff, he goes to therapy, he lets Robby talk him down pretty easily, he gives Robby a letter to hand off so Abbot doesn't mentally carry the things he needs to say to deal with horrible deaths that hit too close to home.
We meet Robby listening to music on his way into work in a hoodie, seeming pretty chill. And then the longer the season goes on you see he's the one falling apart at the seams. He's the one who was maybe actually a danger on that roof. He's the one who won't process or get help or trust or communicate.
And then there's Langdon. He's Robby's star pupil. We meet him as very ADHD but very competent person Robby wants to push forward into a deeply competitive program so he can go far. But you start to see that he's falling apart in the same way as Robby.
And when. Robby realizes that maybe his star pupil is going the same way as him, I think that is a huge part of what unravels Robby. He realizes Langdon also doesn't have his shit together, he also can't trust people, he also can't ask for help. So Robby just. Yells get out of here and go get yourself help. So much help. All the help.
He yells go get help at a mirror of himself the top of his lungs. And then he goes home and still talks to nobody.

I keep seeing people talking about the characters on the pitt. Like look at how this character talks to this character. Look at how they snap at each other. Like it is proof that one character or another is a bad person. And I think we just missed the part where this show is telling us that the Healthcare system has put all of these characters in a situation where it is almost impossible to be the best version of themselves.
(If you are too slow people die, if you go fast you miss things and people die, you just watched a little girl die, now go help an old lady regulate her blood pressure with a smile on your face)
I love all these characters very much, and it is honestly a bit scary how little grace we as a Fandom are giving them.

a major aspect of the show people ignore is that only one person doing highly questionable and patient-endangering shit, as you laid out in your post, got the boot, while the other did not. this was in part arbitrary choice within the diegesis, highly dependent on langdon's personal relationship to robby. the scene gets repeatedly described as a breakup, the personal betrayal of it all makes robby tunnel vision on langdon to an unproductive degree. there's also the general heightened scrutiny of drug-users, seen as somehow more immoral and dangerous than any cowboy intern doing fuck all.
langdon, to a degree others do not, becomes an acceptable recipient for robby's mounted frustrations at a pivotal point of the narrative. even before there's repeated teasing of this dynamic. the kabedong would've been inappropriate with any of the female doctors. he makes the same pedagogical mistake of dressing down langdon in public (the shot of ER staff looking up in shock is there for a reason!) after catching him yelling at santos.
Not only does santos not get the boot abbot actively encourages her at the end to essentially be an er cowboy like him lmaooo.
I do wonder if Langdon had been more in his right mind and able to calm down and not taken such an insane approach with Robby how this all would have played out differently. His immediate reaction to “you’re just as fucked up as me, asshole, so keep my secret and I’ll keep yours” essentially ruins everything good between him and Robby. Robby does clearly think about throwing the pills away for a second….more than a second.

samira and langdon foils…can anyone hear me…samira takes too long because she has such deep empathy and wants everyone to have the highest standards of care possible and langdon moves from case to case quickly and without getting attached so he can give the most efficient care and help as many people as possible. langdon starts as the prince and falls from grace…samira starts as the black sheep and rises to the occasion… HELLO ARE YOU SEEING IT

mel having to deal with frank’s monthly hyperfixations… like she has pretty set hobbies that she likes to do and plans accordingly so now here comes frank with a new intense interest in pickleball that promptly ends when he suddenly decides he wants to try fucking hydrox for some goddamn reason. he gets like halfway through training and drops it to learn how to play the fucking harmonica cuz he got really into piano man by billy joel. like frank please…. we can’t keep doing this

i’m deeply invested in the whole samira-robby-langdon dynamic btw. samira & langdon both projecting their weird daddy issues onto robby while robby is completely unaware that he’s feeding into it by loudly and proudly declaring frank as his Heir Apparent & samira as the Problem Child. and i can imagine that there’s a certain amount of resentment towards frank on samira’s side, because how can there not be. only for that shit to get completely flipped on its head after lockergate and now it’s 10 months later and in walks langdon and oh? what’s this?? robby’s got a new heir apparent and langdon’s all fucked up abt it bc he’s never had to compete for robby’s attention & approval before like samira has! so now frank’s stuck with the Problem Child label, and all the resentment that comes with it!
idk. i’m just very compelled by mr. traumatized workaholic overachieving doctor flip-flopping between his two traumatized workaholic overachieving doctor pseudo-children while being completely oblivious to the psychological ramifications of his favoritism.

The way he keeps switching to first person
My heartttt
Patrick Ball talks about the scene with Langdon begging Dana for help by having her vouch for him and about the scenes with Robby in the last episode and the threat of what he calls mutually assured destruction between them.

Spoilers for ER season 4
(Not sure if you can spoil it but better safe than sorry)
I just finished the episode where Carter takes care of his cousin while he goes through detox, and I don't know I have so many feelings about how he is with him, and how Carter was alone in rehab, and how Robby sent Frank away to rehab

Yesss
I watched the show, came on here and lived in Fandom land for a few weeks, then rewatched with my mom, and I was fully ready for the _mean to everyone but Mel_ character
But aside from his whole thing with Santos, he spends the whole day teaching people, I don't think we even get to see Langdon on a case by himself
He is dorky and funny and sarcastic and yes even kind
And he is an addict who lashed out in a very destructive way when he was about to be caught
But personally I think he deserves so much more compassion
Rewatching The Pitt and y'all really don't give Langdon enough credit when it comes to how kind he is.

I love that all Langdon talks about is his family. I love that he doesn’t remove his home life from his workplace. I love that he needs this job, and he wants, needs, to mean something to the people around him—he wants Robby to acknowledge they’re friends. He wants to be a mentor to someone, and he’s found a mentee in Mel. He involves his coworkers in his (bad) decision-making process (not that they involve themselves, though).
He loves his family so much. The friendship bracelet with “Dad” on it that he wears to work. He gets a dog for his kids. He needs to hear his son’s voice when a child dies. He needs to be sure his family is okay. He wants to win a bet because it’s fun, he’s competitive, so why not, and he wants to get a gift for his wife.
I think it’s so fascinating that characters like Langdon typically use work as an escape from reality, from home, but he loops his personal life into almost every conversation. He merges these things so much because they’re the most important things in his life. He can’t have them fall apart (until they do). I think Langdon craves the picket white fence fantasy a lot. That isn’t to say he doesn’t actually want it, the job and the family. I think he wants it all. He wants that stability, he wants to give his family that stability. But it’s crumbling down way faster than he can handle. And we don’t even see the fallout of him going home and having to tell his wife all of this. Doctor, husband, father, protégée… all these roles and he feels himself falling short in every way.
