A breath hisses between teeth, as the usually determined gaze is averted, cast aside and lowered in reaction as though a truth has been touched upon that he is not yet ready to witness. In many things, Renji has strived to reach greater heights, to polish himself into a diamond no matter how rough his edges, yet in the end he feels it to the core of his bones. He is little more than the stray who found his way into a society he does not belong on his skill alone. Everything fits him ill - the decorum, the clothing, the society - and he compensates for it with attitude and determination. But like the stain of blood upon a white robe, he cannot remove the knowledge that he does not belong. That he will never be the kind of man who could feel at ease here, nor be welcomed by all, for his imperfections were too many and his apologies too few.

The hope his captain gives him with so few words aches in his chest. An unknown cruelty to even think as much.

"Maybe it's not a question of worthiness," he answers instead, swallowing, wondering how it is that Byakuya wields the ability to target every vulnerability he has so easily. The man could shatter him to the core should he wish it, and it would be effortless. Such is the nature of the moon, a beautiful beacon of cold light, casting away darkness without the comfort of the sun's warmth.

"There can't be love for everything. Some things just get less in the end." The grit in his voice is enough to make him straighten, back stiff, gaze a swirl of acceptance and defiance. He long since stopped acknowledging this as a matter of the inanimate, but he'll keep the guise for separation's sake. Instead his mind drifts to those who resemble the moon itself, who he can devote himself to, can gift his loyalty and every inch of his unworthy soul and how he would do everything he can to ensure they are seen as he sees them.
