“Why another day? What is wrong with today?”

diedking:
he had to be strong for them all, even if they couldn’t see the reasoning behind it yet. still, difficult didn’t even begin to describe what it was like facing serena, brows furrowed deeply while he wracked his brain for an explanation that a seven year old would understand. nothing came. instead, he removed her small arms from around him and knelt to her level, eyes warm & kind in spite of what he knew was to come.
“I know you don’t want me to go, little wolf, but I’ll see you again soon.” a lie that was, however much he hated to face it. truthfully, there was no way of knowing how long it would be until he returned home. wishful thinking brought him home swiftly, but the reality of it made his stomach twist. “Sometimes we have to do things that we don’t want to do. I’m the oldest – I have to help protect you all as much as I can. And you have to be here, protecting our people as well. Winterfell needs you as much as it needs Bran and Rickon. Do you understand?”
“You won’t see me soon, that’s a lie. I’m seven, not stupid.” The little girl crossed her arms and pouted. She disliked it when people patronized her. It was war, and while she knew nothing of it, she had read enough to know that it never ended quickly or as easily as people think. It was why she was upset in the first place. She didn’t like wars nor the thought of her brother fighting and leading in one.

But even as she’s frustrated and angry, her brother’s next words were something she knew she couldn’t deny. She’s a Stark of Winterfell, she has a duty to her people. But what about her family? Doesn’t she also have a duty to keep them safe too, and isn’t safety being keeping Robb away from war?
“But you’re my people too, how can I protect you when you’re so far away.”

“Sansa is here. Sansa is in Kings Landing. Talking with the Prince” Lauyrn frowned, it wasn’t the best thing the young girl would like to hear, but Lauryn wasn’t about to lie to the young girl. “I know you want to go home, and you will sweet girl, I promise.” Lauyrn hoped eventually Serena would be allowed to go home. She was less valuable to the Crown, less so then Arya or Sansa. “Arya’s missing, and everyone is worried about you. Sansa will be too if you hide here forever.” Lauyrn held out her hand hoping she’d come with her. “We can play hide and go seek while we wait for Sansa. No one will find us. I promise.”
“I don’t like the prince, he’s mean!” The little girl clutched her toy even closer to her, as if it would offer her protection from the mean older boy that she had taken a dislike to. Then worry came over her as she heard Arya was missing, “What happened to Arya? Why is she missing? Where did she go?” This was all becoming too upsetting for Serena, tears spilling down her face as she took Lauryn’s outstretched hand, “You promise we see Sansa?”

starkmatriarch:
It had felt like a punishment when Ned had said it, in truth it still did, that he would go south and she would remain here, that so many of her children would continue to grow in the south, far from her reach, while she stayed in the cold North. A North which already seemed so much colder and emptier now she knew who would soon leave it.
“I know, my sweetling, but sometimes we must do things we do not wish…but you will enjoy the capital,” Catelyn made herself say as she played a little with Serena’s pretty hair, “And there shall be many exciting things to see….”

“What is so exciting to see there, it’s all hot and dusty anyways...” The little girl was unimpressed by the things she had read about King’s Landing. Sure she had read about very interesting history and all the great monuments, but what is any of that to a girl who just wants to be home with her family. It wasn’t nearly as enticing as spending time in the Godswood.
“Can’t you talk to Father? Make him let me stay? Why do I need to go, King’s Landing doesn’t even have woods like we do.” There was a tinge of whine in her voice, Serena was not pleased at all. “Why do people have to do things if they don’t want?”

Sansa takes the painting, studying it and nodding thoughtfully. “Of course I do, it’s lovely!” She knelt down. “But can you tell me what it’s a picture of?”
“It’s you, of course! And you’re riding on a big dragon!” The little girl excitedly bounced on her feet, proud that her sister had liked her drawing.

“Why not?”

The little girl frowned at her sister, her face soon turning into a pout, “Just because he’s the prince doesn’t mean he gets to be mean to people, and I saw him being mean.” Serena wasn’t one to judge people, unless it was people who did bad things to others.

longmayshereign-cersei:
She gestured for a hand maid to come forward and placed a beaker of milk and honey in front of the girl as Cersei sat down on the other side of her desk and put the most comforting smile that she could on her face.
“Such a polite girl, and so very clever as well.” Cersei said as she took another sip of her wine. “Tell me, did your mother teach you what a traitor is? What it means?”
Serena looked at the enticing food, it almost tempted her, but she knew that the concern for her family and what had happened was far more important than her desire for food and being hungry.
Frowning at the Queen’s words, the little girl spoke as seriously and assuredly as she could, “My father would never be a traitor, that’s not like him.” Serena knew there were many things in the world that she did not know, but she knew this as well as anything in her life. Father would never betray anyone.
