Final-spoiler-free Lord of Mysteries season 1 review

Story: 10 out of 10

The authors faced a challenge to put 210 chapters into 12 series. It was clear from the beginning that some content will be cut off completely, and some will have to wait untill special episodes. But I like that the creators didn't try to just retell the novel, they adapted it, and it is the right thing. They made right priorities, so even with some cuts the story looks interesting, understandable and completed.

Characters and their interactions: 7 out of 10.

The cuts had to have consecquenses anyway, and here they are. Tarot club and Moretti family arcs miss the most, and while the first one's time to shine will be in special episode and later, with the other one it's more unclear, how much content with Melissa and Benson we will get in the future. Also, if you are anime-only who didn't watch Old Neil's classes, you very likely won't emotionally connect to him as much as he deserves. But Leonard's, Azik's and Dunn's arcs were clearly prioritised, and they are made perfectly, and Dunn-Daily is even more obvious than I remember from the novel.

I also changed my mind about Klein's personality problem I mentioned in previous review. I suddenly realised that the novels, at least in my 1st language, seem to have special way of writing, so in vol 1 Klein seems a little to calm and emotionless for a smart, but ordinary guy who randomly transmigrated into unknown, dangerous world full of horrors. And I so much enjoyed to see more of his emotional side, especially in the final.

Understanding: 8 out of 10

The worldbuilding is harder to understand from the donghua, than from the novel, let's be honest. My concerns are beyonder abilities, rituals and action method. In the adaptation we don't get presise explanation of each sequence's set of abilities, so it's often hard for anime-onlies to understand some of Klein's and other characters' desicions. Novel-readers also see some differences from the novels here and get no explanation, so even for us it's sometimes hard to get which Beyonder ability is used in the battle.

Animation: 1000000000 out of 10

I don't think it demands any explanation. It's absolutely perfect. Pure eye peasure.

Soundtrack: 1000000000 out of 10

Same as animation, very memorable and emotional. Main antagonist's themes are masterpieces, I want soundracks to be released so badly, so I could listen to them all day long. The final ending song was the reason I, not really emotional person, cried watching ep 13 in chinese, then cried watching with eng subs, cried when tranlating the subs and cried when watching with translated subs🥲.

Action scenes: 9 out of 10

One point takes beyonder powers issue I mentioned, sometimes, especially in 1st half of the season, I wanted to pause the fight to catch up with what's going on.

Adaptation: 10 out of 10.

By adaptation here I mean smaller detais and ways of storytelling that make it exciting for those who know main plot-twists. Even then, you can't be sure you precisely know what you'll see in the next scene. Great job.

So, In general: 9 out of 10.
