jasnah and wit are really fun if you keep in mind the whole thing is one elaborate game. i mean, for fuck's sake, he's her legally-enforced insult man. he's her pet jester. this is an inherently weird dynamic even before you throw in the fact that he's 10,000 years old and bad in bed, or that she's an atheist and he killed god. they're both playing endless games, performing for an audience. they're playing rulers, playing heroes, playing gender. he's a storyteller, she's a historian. they can run rings around most of the people on roshar, immortal heralds included. there are very, very few people around who can keep up with the pace their minds move at. they both have secrets they're never telling anyone, including each other, such as what they're doing, or planning, or what their intentions are. despite the various power imbalances (some in favour of jasnah, others in favour of hoid), these two are maybe the only people in the cosmere who can truly consider each other intellectual equals. is it a romance? in the conventional sense, no. i think if you asked hoid if he was a romantic, he would view it in the sense of the literary movement - Romantic, not romantic. whether this is true or not is, of course, irrelevant. they don't plan on spending the rest of their lives together, in part because that's literally just not possible. i don't think it's even particularly written to be a romance - and that's to their advantage, because their dynamic is so dubious and weird that romance is really underselling it. it's just another layer to the game they're playing with each other - because together they can brush past the idiocies and formalities of everyone else's tediously limited minds and play with words and feelings and what it means to be alive. and that, to me, is infinitely more interesting than any of the genuine romances going on behind them.

I'm going to be thinking about Sigzil renouncing his oaths for the next eight hundred years. After Sunlit Man I assumed it was some cataclysmically bad event where he was in a leadership position, or failure of judgment, that pushed him to break his Windrunner oaths, and spent essentially every shattered plains chapter waiting for things to go horribly wrong. After all that only for it to be in protection of Vienta. Giving up his bond, and the sky, and his oaths, protecting someone. The very cornerstone of the windrunner ideals. I'm never going to emotionally recover from this.
