Glass Printing
For my final images I would have like to have printed onto glass. This is because it would have given the impression that the body part is being pressed up against the surface, creating a pseudo-realistic effect. I didn't have the funds to print in this way so I instead used MDF.

Statement
In this project, I have looked into body image and body dysmorpia within women, for this I have created six A2 photography prints of a women’s body that focus on what she feels to be her “imperfections”. My photography prints are created with a handheld scanner that I have traced over the model's body, I have used a scanner because it created detail in an image, because of how close it is to the body, that you couldn’t create with a camera. Also, Scanography images make the “imperfection” look worse than it actually does in real life, which mirrors how a lot of women view their own “imperfections” worse than it actually is.  I have looked into many sources and photographers for this project such as Jenny Saville who created images on her weight loss. I have picked the 6 images out of all my test shots because I feel they are the images that give the strongest message, I picked images I feel a lot of women could relate too that they may have had insecurities about in their life.

Target audience
The target audience for this project is women from the age of 12 up to 60+. I have picked women in general because my project is mainly focused on the women’s body and their own insecurities. The age range I have picked is from my research of looking into women who suffer from these problems it seems as if these problems can start from the age of 12 and can be ongoing up to the age of 60+.

Perfect Imperfections
These series of images focus on women who suffer with body image and body dysmorphic disorder. In this project, I scanned parts of the body that a lot of women felt to be imperfect and does not fit with societies high expectations of what they should look like. I used scanography in this project because of the distorted way it creates the image, which mirrors the distorted views women can have over their bodies. Using a scanner for my images has, in turn, created more detail, such as picking up little hair and bumps on the skin that I wouldn’t have got by using a camera.

It's time to put an end to Britain's “medically unhealthy” shop mannequins
A study has found that the average mannequin is severely underweight if it was human. There is evidence that showing these ultra thin bodies is a big contributor to mental health problems and eating disorders.Eric Robinson who undertook this study went around shops but none would let them measure their models so he relied on his visual analysis. In the industry, there is a trope that clothing looks “better” on thin models this is why we don’t see bigger women walking on the catwalk or fitting into designer clothing. If you look at a mannequin in a British clothing shop you can see that the clothing is pinned because the clothing is too big for them.
In 2013, Debenhams was there first in the UK to introduce size 16 mannequins, At the time the mannequins were criticised because some people felt it was normalising England's obesity crisis. Robenson has said that he feels shops should find a balance with their mannequins and make a more realistic perception of the female body.

When you have body dysmorpia, coping through plastic surgery can be a nightmare
Dr. Beverly Fischer who is head surgeon at advanced centre for plastic surgery has been performing cosmetic surgery for almost a decade. A few years ago Dr Beverly encountered a patient who she says will haunt her for years she was a young woman in her 20′s who wanted nasal reconstruction. She said that she didn’t want a cute turn-up nose she just wanted it smaller, everything she said seemed fine. Beverly operated on the patient and when she came back she fely it wasn't small enough and she couldnt tell any diffrence. His dissatitfaction with her surgery resulted in many vists back to see Dr Fischer, she would come in with an apointment or without a apoitment to request more surgrey saying that she is dissatifyed and is getting teased from family and friends she even said that she felt she looked like a trauma patient.
Dr Fischer suggested she she a psychiatrist, she felt offended by this coment and continuted to harass Dr fischer and her staff. Dr fischer ended up giving the woman a refund and told her that she couldnt communicate with her anymore not knowing at the time that the women was suffering from body dysmorpic disorder. The most common procedures that people with body dysmorpic disoder get is a nose job, breast augmentation, liposuction and minamal treatments such as collagen injections, chemical peels and fillers. With BDD patients they normaly focus on the small details which meand there surgury normally comes with a downside. Some patients swich there area of obsession after surgury such as getting a nose job then there stomach taking over for the nose.
Lindsay who is a make up artist from London suffered with BDD for years, she desided that surgury was the only was to cure her symptoms. Lundsay was mainly unhappy about the way her stomach looked. Normally people with BDD should avoid surgury all together but Lindsay consulted her mental health nurse who supported her disision to go ahead with this. After the surgury Lindsey fet fantastic but then a few weeks on she started to notice things she was unhappy with such as loose skin and fat on her hips. She desided to go for another round of surgury becuase she thought that another surgery would get rid of the acsess fat. She was happy for 2 days after the surgery and started finding problems again, she felt he waist was uneven and she looked deforment. BDD paitents who are unhappy with there surgury offten become depresed and there symptoms worsen.

Why the new barbie bodies matter
The Barbie is known for the most “infamous body in the world”, if she was human she would be 5′9, 8st with a 32″ bust. This means she lacks 17% fat that she would need to menstruate and wouldn't be able to walk due to her ankles being unable to support her body, she would be living with only half a liver and a small intestine.
She has now undergone the biggest makeover in history, there are now selling tall, curvy and petite body shapes and even different skin tones, eye colours and hair styles. This is a bold but clever move by the company one that I feel will get a good reaction from the public. For over 6 decades barbie has been giving out an unrealistic body expectation, in one set that they introduced even included a cookbook titled how to lose weight. The time that children can see a realistic body the sooner the better.

John Coplans
John Coplans was an English-based artist, curator and photographer. In 1980′s Copans created a series of nude black and white self-portrait images that he is very well known for. These images where a study of the ageing body, he has photographed all over his body but never shows his face so they were not based on specific man or given a certain identity to the person.  His first images were taken on a timer but then when he came back to these images he hired an assistant to help out. For these images, he used a 4x5 polaroid positive/negative film so that he can immediately see the results of the images.

Behind the scars
Behind the scars is a project that invites people to show off their imperfections. Photographer Sophie Mayanne has created a project where we celebrate our apparent flaws she photographs people’s scars. This project has a vary of different people from people who hid behind there scars to people who have learnt to love them. These people wanted to document their scars to show others that they shouldn't be afraid to who they are. Sophie has said “ I’ve always been interested in different ideas of beauty, and what people consider flaws.”
To find her models she looked through modelling agencies and Instagram to find models with scars that were willing for her to photograph them. She spent time talking to these models about their scars to understand the stories and see the different types. Mayanne hopes that these images will bring body positivity to people who don't feel comfortable showing off their scars. This seems to be the case because she has been receiving emails from people across the world praising her for her work.

Matus
Matus started his first series of scanography by taking self-portraits of his own body. In his image’s he wanted to show the object he is without context. His next few projects after experimenting with the scanner he went on to using other people in his images and started to scan body parts of both women and men. I have picked this artist because his work is very similar to my own with the scanning of body parts. I feel that Matus has used a flatbed scanner i can tell this from some of them images where the model is leaning on the scanner her check is flat and squashed upon it.
