while I don’t agree with that referring to men in their 30s-early 40s as “old man yaoi”, I UNDERSTAND why many people who primarily consume honest-to-goodness BL manga are quicker to call it that, because there is just such poor representation for men that aren’t hairless dehydrated 20-something twunks. They’re wrong, but I get why it happens.

I also understand that “middle-aged yaoi” isn’t as fun to say as “old man yaoi”, even when it’s more technically accurate.

So I would like to propose new vocabulary: Grown Ass Yaoi. yaoi that’s grown ass men. they’re not old but they’re not young adults either. you get me? Grown Ass Yaoi

All those are unofficial and available on the Google play store as of August 13th 2025. They mirror AO3's content and insert ads, for which the developer gets paid by page impression (that's every time the ad appears in the fic you're reading) not just clicks.

No money goes to AO3, nor to the fic writer. It goes to the person who did the bare minimum.

Many of these apps have poorly worded or non existent privacy policies, so they may also be mining as much data as possible and selling that on to unknown third parties.

Please, just use the official AO3 site and the browser.

discord has been pushing its new uk online safety act changes early for some users. this screenshot belongs to a 32 year old who used discords built in face scanner to verify their age. the scanner said they were 11 years old, and instantly suspended the account, with no option to try again or appeal, and the suspension will automatically end in 2027, when they’re “old enough” to use discord.

DO NOT SCAN YOUR FACE TO VERIFY YOUR AGE

if you really want to verify your age, use a different option available. don’t trust the face scan.

With all due respect, if an app or website asks me to scan my face so that an AI can check if I'm an adult, I don't care about the claims that they don't use my data or delete any pics I take for this purpose, I am leaving the fucking website and never coming back.

Chatting with my kid who just turned 15 and I mention the face-scanning age verification nightmare happening in the UK

He goes: "Oh I did that once. It told me I was over 18."

Then he goes on to tell me about how you can fool it with stage makeup to age you up and about how kids will hire someone to age makeup them so they can pass the one-time age verification

Anyway I'm so happy that with all this privacy nightmare purity internet big brother with face scans telling 30yos they're 11, at least we're protecting the children. 😐

Want to add something to the whole "YouTube ID protest" thing- (More info about this here if you need it)

If you're participating in refusing to use YouTube from the 13th of August until the ID policy is lifted, there is a chance you might accidentally use YouTube in one way or another.

Muscle memory, autopilot, a misclick, any number of things, please don't let that mistake cause you to give up! We are human, we make mistakes, but as long as you correct it and continue the protest it will reduce the damage and keep the viewership loss on YouTube high, increasing the chance of success! That's what matters, that we keep trying. We need to show that even if we trip and fall, we'll just get back up and keep going!

I believe in you, even if you make a mistake, I'll keep believing in you, as long as you keep trying!

We will succeed. We refuse to be tracked or censored. We deserve our privacy!
