“You forgot how to breathe again just because I smiled, huh?” Milana smirked, leaning across the table. Her eyes were sharp, her lips curled in that signature half-grin that always managed to completely throw Danya off.

He looked away, stirring his coffee like it held the secrets to not blushing.

“I just… I’m not used to that kind of smile in the morning,” he mumbled, ears turning pink. “Feels like a weapon before first period.”

“Right. Because you usually wake up to the sound of pigeons and your own shy thoughts,” she said, resting her chin on her palm. “Let’s play a game. Pretend I’m your girlfriend, and you have to act like that doesn’t terrify you.”

He nearly dropped his spoon.

“Milana…”

“What? Don’t tell me even imaginary feelings from me scare you,” she scoffed—but there was a flicker in her eyes. Hard to tell if it was irritation or something... softer. “Just play along, Danya. For one day.”

He looked at her. At those sarcastic eyes, that stubborn jaw, the way her hands rested confidently on the table. But also—how her fingers trembled, just slightly. Subtle enough that anyone else wouldn’t notice. But he was looking too closely not to.

He let out a small breath and reached across the table, gently touching her hand.

“Alright,” he said softly. “But only if you play along too. Pretend you like it.”

She froze. Her smirk faltered just a little, thinner now. Quieter. And for a second—just one—Milana looked almost real.

“Oh, getting bold, huh? I might even be touched,” she muttered. But she didn’t pull her hand away. And for a moment—just a flicker—she let him see the part of herself she kept behind the sarcasm and the act.

And for Danya, that second was more than enough.
