A New World Fool- Ch. 3- Punch de Ouch
1.5k words
Content warnings/endnotes: Content warnings:

Nanako isn't stupid. She even owns a whistle for these kinds of situations, though right now it's buried under a year’s worth of stuff. Nanako knew she should have been paying more attention to the things around her, especially being somewhere new, but she wasn't expecting to get mugged on her first day.
“Hey, dollface.”
Oh, God.
Nanako turns around, facing three boys (likely around her age), and feels her hands shake as she brings the arm holding her phone down to her side. The one at the front of the trio continues talking.
“Hey- how about you make it easy for everyone and just hand over your bag?” His voice takes on a tone which was likely an attempt to sound suave, but sounding totally sleazy instead.
“Would hate to have to gang up on a girl- three of us, one of you… anything could happen.” He threatened. One of his hands was still in his pocket, and he grinned, looking her up and down. It reminded her of a shark.
‘...That’s fucking disgusting you womanizing built-like-a-bus bitch.’
All potentially nice or sympathetic thoughts ditched Nanako, who immediately got the ick and decided. There was no way in absolute hell she would let any of these guys do anything to her. She slid her backpack off of her shoulders, pretending it didn'thold all of her personal belongings and wasn’tdesperately heavy. She took a shaky breath, preparing her legs to run like hell, and-
CRACK!
A fist connected with the boy's nose. The two behind them dropped their jaws and widened their eyes, jumping back a bit at the suddenness of the movement. It wasn’t Nanako who had hit him (not to say she wasn't planning on it), but a stranger.
Appearing as a blue blur at first, he barked out a laugh, the stranger's steely grey eyes shining like gunmetal in the dim light of the alley. He tossed his dark bangs out of his eyes and got into a fighting stance as the other boys quickly turned to him. His haircut vaguely reminded Nanako of her brother’s.
“Ganging up on a girl?! S-so not cool.” There was a slight stutter to one of his words, Nanako noticed, as she slowly put her bag back over her shoulders. She quickly and quietly slipped out of the alley. This was a fight she preferred to be out of, and decided that it would be best to just run to the apartment and call the police once she was inside.
…If it wasn't for the fact she could totally hear the guy who stepped in for her getting the shit kicked out of him. Apparently that one punch was all he had. Nanako stood outside of the alleyway, her legs shaking. It would be totally terrible of her to leave him right now! The moral dilemma froze her in place, leaving her standing off to the side of the alley.
The voices coming from the area got a bit louder.
“Hey, you- augh!”
“ Hirooo-” A voice growled- “Quit fucking shit u-!!!”
“Jesus!”
“Then quit-”
“Hey, grab his arms!”
After what felt like a minute or two of audible struggle, the other boys left the alley.
“Stop fucking with us. Swear to god…”
Nanako listened for about a minute until she was sure they had left. She hadn't heard the stranger move, so she cautiously walked in to check on him.
The boy was collapsed next to a garbage bag, but he wasn't unconscious. Nanako could see him looking up at the quickly darkening sky, filled with clouds and nothing, unlike the stars back home. Nanako was reminded of the time, and hoped that the landlord would take pity on her later.
As Nanako moved forward, she noticed that he already had some bandages on his face and arms, so it could be inferred that the boy had gotten into a few scuffles before.
His eyes slid over to her, widening when he realized who it was. He immediately straightened up, though unsuccessful as he let out a short groan of pain, slinking back down.
“I have some first aid supplies in my bag… Do you need any?” The answer was obvious, but Nanako thought it was best to ask rather than just start handing over bandages.
“Uh… Sshhhure.” He agreed, taking the hand Nanako offered and standing up, nodding. Nanako brought her bag around and started to unzip it, but…
“I have a lot of stuff in this bag and I can't really empty everything out here… My apartment is nearby. Do you mind?”
The boy shook his head.
“Not r-really.” He stuttered out, looking a little panicked that Nanako had spoken up again.
---
The walk back was… Awkward was probably the nicest way to put it.
“What’s your name?”
“Hiroyuki. Aoyama. Most people just call me Hh-Hiro for short, though…”
“Cool.” Nanako nodded. “I’m Nanako Dojima.” Hiro nodded back at her.
“C-cool.” He mumbled. Nanako wondered about the stutter, but decided it was rude to ask him about that when they barely knew each other. For god’s sake, he had saved (kind of) her from the guys that were about to mug her (but not really, given that she was about to hit one of them and run away)!
The rest of the walk was silent.
---
“It’s just you.. Right?” Nanako sweated as her landlord handed her the keys. Hiro shrunk a bit under her piercing glare, but Nanako stayed strong.
“Yeah.” And no tone, expression, or further explanation used! What a great start with the woman whose mercy she would be living under for a year.
It reminded Nanako of something her brother would do, just deadpanning it with nothing else, she thought, suppressing a smile. Miss Tojo was already examining her ruthlessly, and there was no need to make her any more annoyed.
Nanako opened the door, feeling Miss Tojo’s judgmental gaze on her.
“Good night, Miss Dojima.” And with that, Nanako’s landlord made her exit, heading down the stairs.
The two entered the apartment which was cleaned to perfection and came with a futon, storage shelf, TV, stove and microwave, and a low table to eat at. Nanako set her bag down on the table, opening it and taking some of the items out as Hiro hovered awkwardly by the door.
Nanako gestured for him to come by the table once she found the kit. It was a bit old, given to her by Kanji when he first taught her how to sew. Nanako’s kept it stocked throughout the years, and even added some larger bandages and disinfectant, mostly as weird ‘just in case’ afterthoughts.
She handed him the kit, wondering why exactly she invited him over. Hiro could probably buy this stuff at a convenience store. Maybe she felt bad about ditching him? There's not much she could have done, though, an-
“Um… Do you go to Kojiki academy? I-I didn't really mean to look, but I saw your uniform.” Hiro piped up, gesturing to the pile of Nanako’s clothes and belongings on the table. “I-I go there, too!” He continued nervously, “I’m in the Arts department. Music, specifically. You? Arts or S-stem, I mean.”
“Oh! Same as you…” Nanako said. “Take what you need.” She nodded to the first aid kit which Hiro was still holding. “I play piano… that’s actually how I got into the school. You?”
“Harp…” Nanako must have looked at him funny, because he started talking again. “I-I know- I know I don’t look the type, but I do! I’m pretty good at it, too…” His tone brightened a bit at the last sentence, clearly proud of himself.
Hiro unwrapped one of the bandages and put it on his knee, which was pretty easy since he was wearing ripped jeans. “There’s not much that’s bleeding, s-so… but, um yeah. Nice to know we're in the same area. I-if you're a second year, we might be in the same class… I’m pretty sure there’s a band and ac-academics trip in September.” Hiro went on. Nanako smiled.
“That sounds fun. And yeah, I am a second year student.” Nanako confirmed, glancing at the microwave. “It’s pretty late… School starts tomorrow. You should probably get going before your parents worry.” Hiro nodded slowly.
“Yeah, I guess… Um, than-thank you for the bandages.”
---
As she held the door open for Hiro, Nanako had an idea.
“Hey, I don’t really have anything to do after school… Would you like to go somewhere tomorrow? I found a cafe near here, and I do want to go back sometime. I’ll pay, as thanks for… helping me back in that alley.” Nanako hoped the pause in her sentence wasn't noticeable. Hiro smiled back at her, giving a thumbs-up.
“Aaallllright.” He then turned away, jumping down the stairs two steps at a time.
Distantly, Nanako thought about a song involving a small town girl living in a lonely world. Nanako figured that wasn't going to be her this year.
Though, she seriously needed to avoid her landlord as much as possible from now on.

A New World Fool- Ch.2- Encounter
400 words
---
Nanako wakes up.
All of her senses scream at her for a moment. Nanako jolts in her seat as a train attendant taps her shoulder, waking her to let her know of the train's arrival at Kojiki station.
Nanako thanks her, standing up and tossing her bag over her shoulder. Any thoughts of strange or foreboding dreams are forgotten in favor of running over the plan for today. It’s mostly just along the lines of ‘Go over to the apartment my dad got for me so I won’t be homeless.’
---
Nanako quickly realizes that it’s still a few hours until she’s supposed to be at the apartment. Whoopsies the daisies. It feels awkward, just walking around the city with her belongings, so she decides to find somewhere she can stay at for a bit until it’s time to meet up with the landlord.
It’s a bit fun, looking around the city. Nanako didn't intend to explore around, but compared to her old town, it’s huge. The thought of trying to search for somewhere to stay is quickly discarded for the much more exciting task of ‘Explore!’. The streets have more than five people in them at a time, and the shops seem to be mostly chains rather than local businesses. Still, Nanako hasn't spotted a Junes anywhere. Granted, she's accidentally gone into the same street three times without realizing, but still. Nanako hasn't seen one at all.
Office buildings with advertisements light up the streets. It’s no Tokyo, but Kojiki still manages to overwhelm Nanako with its busyness and splendor. It does a really good job of distracting Nanako from her original mission and oh yeah she really should find somewhere to stay so she doesn’t get more lost than she already is.
Nanako finds a cafe named Améle where she can stay for a bit. She slides into a red booth, setting down her heavy backpack that somehow fits all of her belongings. She tries to memorise the name of this place for later. The cozy ambiance and the good coffee is definitely something to go back to, she’d say.
At about six thirty pm, her phone buzzes to let Nanako know that it's time to head over to the apartment. She looks it up on google maps, and finds a faster route than it gives her by going through a few alleys. This works out pretty well, except for the part where three delinquents corner her. Yeahhhhhhhhhhhh.
“Hey, Dollface.”
Oh, God.

A New World Fool- Ch. 1- New Beginning- Prologue

This is also on ao3 by the same title and user!

-Self harm (not the depressed kind or anything it's just there)
---
Nanako has never seen a dead body. This fact changes now, of course. She shouldn't be surprised. After all that business about shadows and, hell, a whole other world (And inside of a tv, at that), she shouldn't be surprised. The world just isn't kind enough to spare her this. Soon, she realizes that she's the first to know about this, to see this.
‘Someone killed her.’
This thought interrupts all the others, a cold fear washing over her body. She can't stop looking up, looking up at the corpse hung from the telephone pole. It almost makes her think of her hometown. She takes out her phone from her pocket. She has to redial a few times because her hands won’t stop shaking.
Ayane Aoyama. Nanako prays her soul is resting somewhere nice.
---
“Nanako, I know you’re leaving, but I just wanted to tell you…” Makoto said, looking around at the empty flood plains on the off chance there would be someone to spot the interaction.
“I like you! I- I’ve liked you since elementary school…” He confessed, bowing at a good ninety degrees. Nanako felt she should choose her words carefully.
“Thank you, but…” Nanako fidgeted with her hands together hesitantly as the boy rose from his position, revealing a flushed face.
“I wouldn't want to start anything since I'm leaving.” And because she didn't have any feelings for him, not like that at least. She figured he would get over it in the year’s worth that she was away, and this seemed like the nicest way to reject his advances. Makoto accepted her answer and left, briefly making her feel like a tomodachi life character.
Since the news had gotten out a few months ago that she was leaving, Nanako had actually gotten three love confessions if she included the one just now. One of them was even from a girl, she remembered, her face reddening as she walked home. She wasn't really interested in any of them, though, so they were all swiftly and gently let down.
That night, Nanako worked on packing her bag since she would be leaving tomorrow. It was strange thinking about it, but she had never really left her hometown before. Sure, she had gone on a few vacations, but besides that, nothing. She never had much of a desire to leave either, yet here she was, packing to leave for a new school in a new city. And at only sixteen.
The scholarship only lasted a year, she comforted herself, so she would be back home in no time.
“Bye, Nanakooo!”
“Goodbye!”
“Have fun!’
About half of Nanako’s class (and some others outside of it) had gathered to wish her goodbye at the train station. It was a bit embarrassing, and she had honestly wanted more of a quiet farewell, but she figured it was nice that they wanted to do this for her, at least.
---
Somehow, Nanako manages to have two dreams on the train. That itself isn't odd, but having them both at the same time is certainly something new. They were fairly strange, yet it was impossible for them to get mixed up together.
One of them, she remembers, was less dreamlike than usual…
---
Nanako wakes up to a smooth, operatic voice.
Though, she’s not sure if she’s really awake. Looking around confirms this, the blue hues of the garden greeting her. It’s nothing like her simple, small garden at home, this one being greater and more elegant. If Nanako looked at the sky, she would notice that there wasn't really one. Just more blue and fog.
Nanako walks around what she decides is an enclosed rose garden, hedges and stone forming a walkway around the area. It winds around in a strange, nonsensical path, but Nanako follows it anyway. Not much else to do. At least the music is pretty, she thinks. I don’t typically get music in my dreams. Nanako passes by a fountain. Near it, a gardener is there, tending to the blue and white roses. He looks back at her, with wide, yellow eyes that quickly resume to a more even expression. He raises, changing his white gardening gloves for shorter, more silky ones. Taking off his hat, the opaque veil attached to it reveals a cheshire’s cat grin as he gestures for her to follow him. Soon, they end up behind a dark iron table under a gazebo. The statues around it are a bit creepy, but not nearly as startling as the appearance of the long-nosed man who sits across from her.
“It seems we have a guest with an intriguing destiny…” He chuckles.
The gardener walks over to stand next to him, taking a clipboard and pen off the table as Nanako smooths out her skirt. There’s no point to the motion given that it’s a jean skirt, but Nanako ends up doing it anyway.
“My name is Igor… I’m delighted to make your acquaintance.” Igor greets her, smiling. “This place exists between dream and reality, mind and matter. It is a room that only those who are bound by a contract may enter…” He pauses for a moment, looking at her.
“Now then… why don’t you introduce yourself?”
“Nanako Dojima…” She answers. Nanako feels like she should say something, or ask about something, but she just stays quiet.
“Hm…” It almost sounds like a laugh, and there’s a look in Igor’s eyes that Nanako has to wonder about. “I see.” He gestures to the man next to him, who is busy scribbling something down on the clipboard. He looks up at the two.
“This is Victor. He is a resident of this place, like myself.”
Victor bows slightly to Nanako.
“Welcome.” He says, smiling blankly. Nanako nods at him and tries to smile back, albeit a bit awkward.
“We shall attend to details at another time” Igor says. “Until then, farewell…”
---
The other dream felt much more… dreamlike, for lack of a better word. Though, it was still just as strange and foreboding as the other, Nanako thinks.
---
Nanako finds herself somewhere strange. She’s not in a room. But she’s certainly not outdoors. The infinite bleakness of the place feels overpowering as Nanako walks up to the only thing physically present besides her. A low table, reminding her of hers back home. The paper placed on it has a ‘Your Name Here’ and a signature area on it below some unreadable text. Or maybe it’s not unreadable, Nanako’s mind just refuses to translate it for her. Her mind can’t process any of it besides the ‘Your Name Here’ and the brush beside it, simple with a sharp end. She should sign it. The paper. She not only knows this, but feels it as well. She has to sign this. She must. She feels it everywhere, in her bones, her skin, her blood…
She picks up the brush only to realize there's no ink beside it. So, she shoves the pointy end of the brush into her inner elbow and flips it around so she can have something to sign with. Then, finally, she signs her name where it was meant to be.
---
Nanako wakes up.

What is A New World Fool??
Have you ever seen posts in the p4 fandom about how 'Nanako should be the next protagonist for p6'? Basically I saw something like that on Pinterest and was just kinda like 'ok.' and didn't care about it until it somehow got a chokehold on me and now here I am making oc's and a whole ass storyline. Whoops.
I have started posting it and it is currently on ao3, but only the first three chapters are here on Tumblr. Here’s the ao3 link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/52609336/chapters/133073878
So uh u know. In case you're confused as to what my art is from.
