You could faintly feel Jeongguk’s fingertips on your cheek. Sleep overcame you as you heard him sigh.

“I’ll be home before you know it,” he whispered before leaving your side.

Sadly it’s been three months since he last left you. You knew it was for the best as well as for your safety. Even if he has enough strength to control his instincts there was always a chance he could lash out.

You weren’t the only one waiting for someone to come back. Onjo still had hope that Cheongsan would appear with Namra. As you both waited for the ladies to fill up your plates, Onjo tapped yours with hers. It could only mean one thing.

“Sorry,” she muttered, not looking at you.

You tried to remain calm as you finally reached the end of the line and looked for a place to sit. He was finally coming back! In about five more hours you would finally be reunited. The minutes felt like hours and you needed something to do because you were becoming more antsy.

“Stop moving around so much you’ll draw attention,” Hari muttered.

You nodded. If you were questioned then the rest won’t be able to meet with Namra. You weren’t going to fuck this up after all the time you waited. Soon a whistle can be heard.

Hari left the tent first and you waited a couple of minutes before you followed her. The beating of your chest didn’t help as you passed by a group of guardsmen.

“I’m going to the bathroom,” you said quietly and quickly walking towards the bathrooms. You turned to look if they were watching you and once the coast was clear you booked it the corner of the gates.

“Ok is this everyone?” Onjo asked. 

You took notice that Minji wasn’t here and you were about to ask when Hari began climbing the gate. Perhaps they got into another one of their arguments and asking was probably going to get you the same cold treatment as Minji.

Once you all were out of the camp you visited the same tree that had yellow ribbons. Each one of you left a small gift for all the friends and family you lost. You had a small elephant toy in your pocket that reminded you of your oldest sister who sadly did not make it.

You looked down at your hands and laughed trying to avoid crying. You thought it would be easier as the months went on but it was the opposite. Your two main sources of comfort were gone.

Though Jeongguk wasn’t entirely gone.

You placed the toy on the ground with a sad smile and Hari placed her arms around you. “In a couple of minutes we will be there,” she reassured you.

The school building felt so cold and you could still hear the echoed screams of the zombies. It left all of you traumatized because even the slightest of sounds you would all turn and tense up. As you approached the top of the building you could hear the crackling noise of the fire.

Onjo took a deep breath before opening the door. You all walked towards the bonfire where Namra was waiting with a smile, ”Hurry! There are a few people waiting!”

Namra had introduced you all to people that were just like her and Jeongguk. Though you still were weary of them because as he always liked to mention all the time to you. The instincts are always going to be there no matter what.

The moment your eyes locked with him it was as if everyone disappeared. Your legs took a mind of their own as you sprinted towards him and you both huffed when you wrapped your arms around him. That’s definitely going to hurt tomorrow.

“Hey, be careful! That really hurt,” he teased. You both knew that he hardly felt a thing.

“Onjo!” a voice you didn’t expect called out.

“Is that?” you asked, unable to say his name. Jeongguk nodded and you looked for Onjo amongst everyone. She remained frozen in her place, not fully registering that Cheongsan was really there.

You turned your attention back to Jeongguk with a smile. You shyly intertwined your fingers together, not minding the coldness. Everything was like it was before. You couldn’t be happier than to have Jeongguk by your side right now.

Every once in a while you’d sneak glances at him and he’d smile on occasions or other times he’d sneak in a quick kiss on the cheek. When it was time to leave he said the same thing as he did last time.

“I’ll be home before you know it,” he whispered before giving you a kiss.
