The Brat Taming of Wu Suowei
There is a lot in the behavior of Wu Suowei that is reminding me of Porsche of KinnPorsche fame, certified BRAT(TM). I do not have enough knowledge to describe this in technical bratty sub BDSM terms, so I’m only defining this as someone who really likes to push his partners buttons to get a response, and the more intense the response, the more valued they feel. All of Wu Suowei’s whining, complaining, pushing back with short smacks are part of this behavior. The way that Chi Cheng plays along, wrestles him, or counters him is all part of this dynamic. Indifference is the worst possible response to a brat.
Whether Wu Suowei is aware of anything that he’s doing is an open question. I suspect he’s doing what just feels natural to him, and Chi Cheng’s responses are all providing a frisson of excitement, whether WSW wants to admit it in the beginning or not.
It’s easy to see in the first half of the series how WSW effectively captures CC’s attention by being a chaos muppet with his Brat Setting set to Maximum. He keeps poking at CC, looking for a response. He’s not entirely comfortable with the responses he gets in the beginning, but slowly he revels in the back and forth.
There’s a critical moment in Episode 8 where Chi Cheng in his frustration with WSW asks why he’s only happy when CC is upset and hurting. The way WSW grins here reveals everything about how he’s gauging CC’s interest. He’s gotten the most clear demonstration of how much Chi Cheng likes him.
It’s all these instances of jealousy and frustration that drive WSW to keep seeking out CC. CC, for his part, is trying to figure out exactly what WSW wants of him. Is this a game and does WSW actually want CC to push harder? Does this brat want to be tamed or is this an actual no? Does WSW even know what he wants? I’d argue that WSW spent a lot of those early episodes figuring out what he wanted and CC spent that same time trying to figure out which response WSW was looking for.
This give and take behavior breaks down entirely in episodes 15/16, which is why things become so strained between them.
The problem is that CC is not taming his brat anymore and even WSW isn’t leaning into this behavior as heavily as he normally does. CC is hemmed in by his cursed knowledge about WSW’s mom. He’s treating WSW with kid gloves, giving him a huge amount of latitude in his behavior. He is acting as if WSW is already aware of his mother’s illness, except he isn’t, so this behavior doesn’t make sense to WSW. It looks like indifference.
And so WSW keeps pushing. He goes to Wang Zhen constantly, hoping that CC will notice and say something. This delightful response where he hauls WSW back home is a good first start. It’s easy to see that WSW is still in angry brat mode in bed. He needs more to feel valued.
Unfortunately for CC, he is very reasonable and says that WSW can box with WZ, just not all the time. I think that if CC had done what he truly wanted, which was to demand that WSW not go near him again, it would’ve been more comforting to WSW. Instead he gets a fraction of the usual rebuke and seething jealousy. The more CC is careful, the more WSW sees someone who doesn’t care anymore.
It’s tragic that the more they care, the more their usual dynamic breaks down. Fear is dampening their responses, and neither is getting the feedback they need to feel secure enough to fall into their usual dynamic.

There is literally no circumstance where I support age verification to access a website. As I've said before I'm very much the "there's nuance here" person on almost everything but on this issue there's no nuance for me, it's awful and horrible in and of itself and it also sets an awful and horrible precedent
