happy birthday to me and HAPPY MAKE A TERRIBLE COMIC DAY!!! it is my FAVORITE thing that this day falls on my birthday, and i am really proud of my comic this year. i decided to make a comic about why i love this day and what it has to do with my birthday, and about what this year has been like for me. this is described in alt text, and i will add the transcript of my handwriting under the cut!

MAKE A TERRIBLE COMIC DAY! (is also MY BIRTHDAY!) and so it's very important to me. I like that it makes people brave and creative. What usually would make them STRESS…instead goes accepted! It's anticipated that the people who see the comic will not only forgive but also appreciate the mistakes. Nothing is allowed to ruin a piece of artwork on this day… so people make amazing things that they might not have otherwise! This year (today!) I turn 19, and I feel like a version of myself that has been erased & redrawn many times over.

It's been a weird year, for sure. I went to college!… only to find I wasn't ready, so I went home. Thus began my year of decisions. I could waste time & effort straightening hair that would never stay put… or… I could learn to take care of it and find joy in what I couldn't change! I could berate myself like I always have for not "living up to my learning potential"… or… I could work with myself to learn in ways that worked for me. (bassoon reed) (quarter-inch cable)

Famously, I really love my birthday. (<- hit by a car while biking to my own party) Even on the years where bad things happen, I see them as good things, or at least a good story, later. It's not that everything has to be PERFECT, or even go my way… It's more like bad comics. No ink stain or spilled coffee or even a tear can ruin it. Because once you decide it won't be perfect from the jump, it makes you brave. It makes you accepting of failure, and it makes you able to see beyond yourself.

And when you decide that others aren't expecting your perfection, that they will see your mistakes and say, well, it's supposed to be that way, when you decide to understand the mistakes of others in turn, you find there isn't anything to be afraid of anymore.

the real danger of spending too much time with friends is you stumble out of ten days of happiness and good food like oh my god THAT was real life. my job means NOTHING
