DANNI SAID: i kind of had a weird night. could use a drink. or ten . / @nervehigh
it's pretty safe to say that tom wasn't counting on company . he knew that danni and imogen were going on their first official date tonight, but expected to be filled in on all the juicy details the next day. but now danni's in his doorway and he's shirtless with a coke can in hand, hair haphazardly tied up, just a tad bit annoyed about being interrupted mid detective pikachu. nevertheless, the need to know all the hot goss ( coupled with his love for his best friend, ) compels him to open the door wider and let her inside. he's allowed ONE QUESTION before danni makes her intentions clear. tom strides over to his sputtering fridge and inspects its contents, well aware that he's not qualified to stand between her and a drink.
❛ — does mr. bud work for you ? sorry to say it's either that or a natty lite that's been living in here since i dropped out of college. no rose or sangria in sight. ❜ he swipes two bud lights just to be prepared and sets them down on the coffee table beside the couch danni has collapsed on. tom can't help but grin at the sight of her, even if she is so clearly EXHAUSTED. it's nice to have some company, even at the expense of his movie night.
his apartment has always been quiet. hauling ass all day as boat boy for the vance's doesn't pay as livable a wage as he'd like, so upon moving to pine springs, he had to settle for one of the more RUN DOWN places in town right off the main drag. underneath him was some sort of antique shop that was built back when dinosaurs roamed the planet, and his elderly landlord across the hall really didn't make much noise, sweet as she was. with gemma off at college for the time being, tom finds himself relying on surprise visits from his friends to keep him sane. when they're not around, all he really has to listen to is the rat that lives in the walls and the constant drip - drop of the leaky bathroom sink.
as danni cracks open her first drink of the night, tom lunges across the couch to fumble for the side - table lamp switch. after a feat of trying to find the damn thing in the dark, the room finally comes to life with a weak glow — just enough for tom to see the pale pink dusting danni's cheeks. he suppresses the urge to excitedly text gemma, fully immersing himself in the moment as he waits for danni to speak again. with each second that passes, it becomes increasingly clear that she's more intent on polishing off her alcohol than she is giving him details. she would be one of those people that opens up a bit easier when they're buzzed.
❛ — so ? you said it was weird, but do you mean good weird or bad weird ? good weird being oh, it's just so wild that we're actually taking the next step after everything, and bad weird being oh, we are much better off as friends. ❜ selfishly, he hopes the latter isn't true. not just because he wants his friends to be HAPPY together, but because he already has so many double date ideas lined up. tom smiles, nudging her with his elbow in an attempt to pry her away from her beer. ❛ c'mon. the suspense is killing me, sunny - d. ❜

SABRINA SAID: what died didn’t stay dead . / @nervehigh
this is the first time he's ever explained it . he does so under the guise of someone else, a person he guesses he's become in his time as a runaway but still doesn't really know all that well. malcolm doesn't even have a last name yet, and yet here he is going on about possession and forest wraiths and ancient magic. ALL TO A WITCH, NO LESS, WHO HE MET MERE HOURS AGO. noah's been searching for her, though. not sabrina specifically, but someone like her who could possibly help him. according to the shit he managed to scavenge from cora pritchard's hut, the spellman family might be able to help him ( so long as they don't eventually recognize him from all the bad press he's been getting lately. )
he didn't expect her to be a teenager. thanks to growing up in the haunted - storybook town that is westchester, noah thought there was a rule in place where every witch had to be like, some old hag. sabrina, who's even younger than him, is very much the opposite. sabrina ( once seeing how pathetic he is, ) invites him inside, makes him tea, and listens eagerly to every last gory detail of his story. and as far as that dismal story goes, malcolm leaves some things unsaid.
for starters, the devil is in the details, so he leaves out as much as he can without making the narrative completely nonsensical. there is no murder, just a freak encounter with an ancient spirit that left his best friend something adjacent to a wraith. there are no other major players, either, aside from the girl he's lost and HIS SISTER who suffered a similar, supernatural fate a decade prior. though he's disguised, noah doesn't have to put on a guilt - ridden facade. every pained sigh, every knit of his brow, every expression of distress is one - hundred percent genuine. malcolm plays the part of the heartbroken, irrevocably fucked up noah marshall exceptionally well.
asking turns to pleading, and pleading turns to begging as the story comes to a close. a photo of harley burns a hole through his pocket, searing his thigh and making him tear up. he isn't trying to appeal to sabrina so much as he is having a small RELEASE in front of her. noah can't tell if her puzzled face is full of judgement, or if the way she's staring him down means she's trying her best to stitch together the fragments of his tale. when she finally responds, she almost seems fascinated. and that's a good sign.
❛ — i mean, basically. physically, she's . . . gone, but her soul is still out there. i've seen her. i've talked to her so many times. she's more alive than some actual living people i've met. ❜ he bites his tongue before he can ramble on too far. if noah had the means, he would do this all HIMSELF. he wouldn't rely on simply trusting another party, especially not one that regularly deals in dark magic, and he would clean up his own damn mess. but since he can't, he clears his throat. ❛ does that mean you'll help me ? help me help her ? ❜
#nervehigh#i lied i wrote option 3 also TEE HEE#☾ . ・゚ . | ANSWER. : it takes a monster to hunt monsters.#☾ . ・゚ . | NOAH: IC. : i thought maybe we were gonna make things right.

DANNI SAID: don’t treat me like some situation that needs to be handled. / @nervehigh
❛ i wouldn't have to if you didn't also have a history of being a flight risk . ❜ his voice grinds against his teeth, pearly whites clenched much like the white - knuckled grip he has on his weapon. parker's footsteps echo through the chamber, gemma's adding to the chorus as she races after him, leaving only three for the time being. every bone in tom's body is begging him to rest, but the thought of taking even a second to breathe terrifies him. he wants nothing more than to keep going. doing so against joesphine ( warpath edition. ) is absolutely impossible without a plan, but anything has to be better than staying here. so many people above - ground are in trouble. and he swore a long time ago to save as many of them as possible.
since he isn't fast enough to grab gemma by the arm and yank her back to point a, tom's frustration is vented through a sharp exhale in danni's direction. imogen's doe - eyes somehow get wider as the two of them turn on each other. tearing the remaining fabric holding their scooby gang together won't do any good in the long run, but it's not like he's the one RUNNING AWAY. not even for a second had the thought ever crossed tom's mind, not for anything or anyone. to break a pact of loyalty makes you PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE in his eyes, and since he can't wring parker's neck at the moment, he settles for chewing danni out. ( imogen had also sided with the cult at one point, but in his haze of frustration and deep - seated fear, tom subconsciously can't stand to see her cry. )
everything about danni's demeanor is DARING him to take a step closer to the ledge they're dancing near. maybe this is just another test. maybe he wants to see if she's still as loyal to their crusade as she was before. he'll find it in him to do the same to imogen next, only fully - assured in himself. somewhere in the distance, there's yelling, but it's indistinguishable from the barbs he and danni are trading.
tom and danni are just too fucking similar. they are the team's everymen; no fancy birthright powers, no millions in a trust fund, and no leverage with the police. they're the type to bring brass knuckles to a gunfight and except to either win or go down in a blaze of glory. they fight all for the little guy, the people most affected by the goings - on caused by the society and the cops and the ancient magic running rampant. it only makes sense that they would butt heads. even if tom can't see it now, his immense respect for danni and how NORMAL she is will return once his rage ( the rage he wishes he could direct at parker; at the society; at every injustice surrounding them. ) cools on down to a mere simmer.
❛ — how do i know you're not gonna take off next, huh ? ❜ the cards don't have it this time around, but he's already said too much. tom throws his arms out, rune - marked wrench heavy in his hand as he gestures all around them. ❛ i swear to god, how did we NOT see this coming with officer kiss - ass ? if either of you are planning on bailing with him, now's the time to do it ! just forgive me for being a little skeptical, all things considered. huh, danni ? — ❜
gemma returns empty - handed, and uses her free grip to give him a harsh shove to the side.

JOCELYN SAID: but are you still the same soul i met under the bleachers ? / @nervehigh
even after all the steps he's taken to try and improve his thinking , dan's first thought is still a resounding i hope not . this is where psychology gets tricky. no healing is linear, it's okay to have bad days, but the consistency of his emotions ( or rather, their inconsistencies . ) often confuse him. one day, he's living and learning from his past, and the next, he has the familiar urge to lock himself in his room under his covers for another week and a half. the latter isn't an option anymore, though. dan's sure getting entangled in yet another uber - dangerous supernatural mystery mission isn't the BEST thing for his mental health, but it's the best thing for harley. harley, who used to make him smile more than nearly anyone. he has to do this ; he owes it to her.
still, seeing jocelyn is a little strange. aside from maybe noah and andy, it's joce that knows more about him than anyone here. exes are like that, and dan is hit with a pang of . . . something he can't quite place at the thought of the history hanging heavy between them. somewhere behind her one working eye is a recollection of every stunt he pulled while he was at his lowest, every last thing he would like to forget. but there's only memories. no malice hides among them, not towards him, at least.
dan backpedals before he can beat himself up for not being the best boyfriend in the world to jocelyn. he was going through some SERIOUS SHIT, and she knew that, and they tried to support each other as much as possible. that's where history comes in handy again : dan knows she's got a heart buried down her throat. he's heard it beat in tandem with his own. he was stunned into silence when he heard it almost stopped when she decided to save his friends. he knows she's good just like she knows he is.
in different circumstances, pine springs would be a nice place to visit. if he wasn't fully aware of the ancient magic waiting to retaliate just beyond the treeline, just beyond the shore, the night would be overwhelmingly peaceful. there's a bottle of xanax in his hoodie pocket he's been debating cracking open because every time he thinks about how stacy doesn't know and how lily doesn't know and how ava doesn't know and how lucas doesn't know — he almost flies into a tailspin. dan's finger tentatively rubs against the ridges of the cap as jocelyn speaks from beside him. she's kind enough to ignore the way he flinches when an owl hoots overhead, or when gemma's grandfather suddenly turns off the front porch light, leaving them with only the moon. he wants to seem as put together as possible to her, but he also wants to let her know that admitting weakness is an incredibly strong thing to do. the line was much easier to toe back when he was counseling underclassmen.
❛ — i think . . . yes and no. i think we're all just trying to be someone who's tough enough to get through all this bullshit for the second time. ❜ he sighs, and his exhale sounds deeper than his words. dan misses his mom. he misses picard. he misses his dad, too. a lot more, lately, now that he's even less of a stranger to death than before. and he missed jocelyn. ❛ you and i included. but if you're trying to ask if i still care about you, the answer is yes. and if you're actually trying to ask if i'm still a wreck sometimes, the answer is sometimes. but that's nothing to be ashamed of. not with what we're going through. ❜

DANNI SAID: i think he did it, but i just can’t prove it. / @nervehigh
❛ hey , forget what the guys said . i think a gut feeling is plenty strong enough to start pointing some fingers , ❜ she nods, barely waiting until tom and parker are out of earshot to speak her peace. look, cultists are fucking slimy. and when it comes to picking out a slimy guy, gemma’s gonna take danni’s instincts over the two dudes they’re investigating with any day. plus, being danni’s wingwoman comes with the perk of finally getting a drink. her mind is still reeling from all the shit she learned in westchester, and a cold beer is the closest she’s going to get to relaxation for awhile.
following danni’s lead, gemma shoulders her way past the pre - drunken patrons blocking their way to the bar. any one of these people could be cultists, she reminds herself, especially the ones you least expect. she won’t lie, though ; she’s gonna be pretty disappointed if this richard sutcliffe guy turns out to be just an eccentric rich guy. whoever these creeps are, they murdered ned mallory and were more than intent on doing the same to her. what is she supposed to do, just let them walk around town like nothing happened ?
according to chief kelley, the answer is yes. but gemma thinks he’s been pretty fucking useless to her so far. it’s not like the horrors she had witnessed ( all of them, the ones before ned’s death included, ) are gonna just go away with some counseling and a cup of hot cocoa. no, someone has to actually do something before anyone else gets stabbed or drowned.
danni is a kindred spirit in that specific way, more so than either of the boys. gemma can already tell she’s been burned by kelley and the ship he runs more than once. but they’re not going to wait for the men that run pine springs to wrestle down the big bads ; they’re going to get them on their own account and drop them at their skeptic’s feet like cats leaving mice behind. hell hath no fury like a woman scorned and all that, but if they’re going to be fucking living here, automatically two times as vulnerable because of their long lashes and full lips, they might as well make sure they’re safe from these scumbags. gemma wishes she didn’t have to keep an air of decorum up with richard for the time being. what she’d really like to do is slug him the second he makes some sort of sleazy comment aimed in danni’s direction.
that would be . . . generally frowned upon, though. not in their best interest if they want to feel him out and gain his trust. ugh, she wishes everyone was as straightforward as her.
❛ — plus, you know him better than tom knows a guy he sees once in a blue moon down at the docks. very nice of parker to use you as a sacrifice, though. don’t you love teamwork ? ❜ she flashes a pearly - white smile in her friend’s direction, sarcasm nearly dribbling down her chin. they order their drinks, and as danni rummages in her purse, gemma plans to slip an extra bill to the bartender. she can spare it far more than danni can ( plus, danni deserves a reward for putting up with what’s inevitably going to happen once they get this guy’s attention. ). ❛ i’m not doubting you at all, but . . . this richard guy is really that bad, huh ? ❜

JOCELYN SAID: wait for the signal and i’ll meet you after dark. / @nervehigh
harley’s death spun his life into a total 180 . the previous aimless existence of connor green had snowballed and snowballed and snowballed until he became . . . well, some kinda vigilante monster hunter. and all for the sake of some girl he’d always known, one of the only people in the world cool enough to make him feel like he was lacking something. yes, connor was quite content with drifting from town to town before finding harley on the side of the road ; before he let his anchor drop in westchester again and all the tragedy that followed that decision.
now, he wakes up each day with a purpose.
he’s not perfect, but he has a reason behind everything he does, lying to stacy included. it’s for her own good, he tells himself for the sake of his own sanity. the truth is that, if his sister knew he was working with persona non grata noah marshall ( something connor himself still can’t believe , ), she’d never forgive him. and he would have no hypocritical, big brother legs left to stand on. he’s spent too much time pondering the what ifs. out of guilt, connor flips a photo of them with their mother over on the dashboard of his new camaro. it rumbles, high beams on, down the back road. it’s quiet and dangerous like everything else in westchester. he just couldn’t keep driving his old one— not with bloodstains and claw marks streaked down the driver’s side door, cut deep into the upholstery.
connor considers, briefly, the fact that he almost died in that car. the chomp to his side reminded him that he wasn’t invisible, the news of harley’s death reminded him that he still knew how to feel, really feel, and jocelyn’s heroism reminded him that he was one of the lucky ones. how fucked up is that ? that he got a chunk bit out of him, and he’s one of the lucky ones.
he’s one his way to meet her now, the gunpowder girl he never anticipated as his partner in crime. she’s another measurement of just how drastically his life has changed. but then again, jocelyn is someone he’s always known. she’s ten times cooler than him, too, which is a hard pill to swallow. she left him two voicemails, just like their plan entailed ; one before sunset ( “wait for the signal and i’ll meet you after dark,” ), and one after ( the signal itself, ). that second message was about an hour ago, meaning he’s just about reached his destination : that same diner from before. she wants to take every precaution, which means that she’s intent on hiding this from people. and he agrees.
she’s outside when he arrives, sitting on the edge of the porch with no light above it. there’s a hood over her head, but connor isn’t stupid. he’d know her in the light, and he knows her in the dark.
❛ — damn, i hope they didn’t give away our reservation. ❜ he taunts as he throws the door to his car shut. she’s probably glaring at him as much as she can, the OPEN sign flickering, obviously on its last leg. ❛ wow. tough crowd. anyway, shall we ? ❜
and there’s a small smirk on her face. mirroring it as best he can, connor pops the trunk and hands her a crowbar.
they turn away from the diner and towards the woods.

𝑡𝑎𝑦𝑙𝑜𝑟 𝑠𝑤𝑖𝑓𝑡: 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒
The following is a collection of lyric sentence starters from Taylor Swift’s ninth studio album evermore. May contain mature subject matter.
WILLOW
I’m rough on the surface, but you cut through like a knife
If it was an open-shut case I never would have known from the look on your face
Lost in your current like a priceless wine
The more that you say, the less I know
Wherever you stray, I follow
I’m begging for you to take my hand
I’m begging for you
I can feel you sneakin’ in
There was one prize I’d cheat to win
They count me out time and time again
Anywhere else is hollow
That’s my man
I come back stronger than a ‘90s trend
Wait for the signal, and I’ll meet you after dark
I’ll meet you after dark
Show me the places where the others gave you scars
This is an open-shut case
I should'a known from the look on your face
Hey, that’s my man
Yeah, that’s my man
CHAMPAGNE PROBLEMS
You booked the night train for a reason
Your heart was glass, I dropped it
You told your family for a reason
You dropped my hand while dancing, left me out there standing
Love slipped beyond your reaches and I couldn’t give a reason
This dorm was once a madhouse
Well, it’s made for me
Soon they’ll have the nerve to deck the halls that we once walked through
I never was ready so I watch you go
She would’ve made such a lovely bride, what a shame she’s fucked in the head
Sometimes you just don’t know the answer til someone’s on their knees and asks you
You won’t remember all my champagne problems
GOLD RUSH
I don’t like a gold rush
I don’t like that anyone would die to feel your touch
Everybody wants you
Everybody wonders what it would be like to love you
What must it be like to grow up that beautiful?
I can’t dare to dream about you anymore
My mind turns your life into folklore
I won’t call you out on your contrarian shit
TIS THE DAMN SEASON
If I wanted to know who you were hanging with while I was gone, I would have asked you
There’s an ache in you, put there by the ache in me
But if it’s all the same to you it’s the same to me
You could call me “babe” for the weekend
We could call it even
Remember how you watched me leave
You can run, but only so far
And the road not taken looks real good now
Hear me out, we could just ride around
The road not taken looks real good now and it always leads to you in my hometown
I won’t ask you to wait if you don’t ask me to stay
I wonder about the only soul who can tell which smiles I’m fakin'
The heart I know I’m breakin’ is my own
Even though I’m leavin’ and I’ll be yours for the weekend
'Tis the damn season
TOLERATE IT
I notice everything you do or don’t do
You’re so much older and wiser
If it’s all in my head tell me now
Tell me I’ve got it wrong somehow
I know my love should be celebrated but you tolerate it
I take your indiscretions all in good fun
I made you my temple, my mural, my sky - now I’m begging for footnotes in the story of your life
I’m begging for footnotes in the story of your life
You assume I’m fine, but what would you do if I break free and leave us in ruins?
Believe me, I could do it
NO BODY, NO CRIME
He did it
Her husband’s actin’ different, and it smells like infidelity
That ain’t my merlot on his mouth. That ain’t my jewelry on our joint account
I think I’m gonna call him out
No, there ain’t no doubt
I think he did it, but I just can’t prove it
No body, no crime
I ain’t lettin’ up until the day I die
Good thing my daddy made me get a boating license when I was fifteen
I’ve cleaned enough houses to know how to cover up a scene
She was with me, dude
They think she did it, but they just can’t prove it
Good thing his mistress took out a big life insurance policy
I wasn’t lettin’ up until the day he died
HAPPINESS
I see this for what it is
All the years I’ve given is just shit we’re dividin’ up
I can’t face reinvention
There’ll be happiness after you
There was happiness because of you
Haunted by the look in my eyes that would’ve loved you for a lifetime
Tell me, when did your winning smile begin to look like a smirk?
I hope she’ll be your beautiful fool, who takes my spot next to you
No, I didn’t mean that
Sorry, I can’t see facts through all of my fury
You haven’t met the new me yet
There’ll be happiness after me
There was happiness because of me
I can’t make it go away by making you a villain
I pulled your body into mine every goddamn night, now I get fake niceties
No one teaches you what to do when a good man hurts you and you know you hurt him, too
All you want from me now is the green light of forgiveness
After giving you the best I had, tell me what to give after that?
All you want from me now is the green light of forgiveness. You haven’t met the new me yet and I think she’ll give you that
DOROTHEA
Do you ever stop and think about me?
A tiny screen’s the only place I see you now
I got nothing but well-wishes for ya
This place is the same as it ever was but you don’t like it that way
It’s never too late to come back to my side
You'rе a queen sellin’ dreams, sellin’ makeup and magazines
From you I’d buy anything
But are you still the same soul I met under the bleachers?
I guess I’ll never know
If you’re ever tired of being known for who you know, you’ll always know me.
CONEY ISLAND
If I can’t relate to you anymore then who am I related to?
And if this is the long haul how’d we get here so soon?
Did I close my fist around something delicate?
Did I shatter you?
Sorry for not making you my centerfold
What’s a lifetime of achievement if I pushed you to the edge but you were too polite to leave me?
Do you miss the rogue who coaxed you into paradise and left you there?
Will you forgive my soul when you’re too wise to trust me and too old to care?
We were like the mall before the internet
Were you waiting at our old spot: in the tree line by the gold clock?
Did I leave you hanging every single day?
When I got into the accident the sight that flashed before me was your face
IVY
Your touch brought forth an incandescent glow, tarnished but so grand
I just sit here and wait, grieving for the living
My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand
My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand taking mine, but it’s been promised to another
Stop you putting roots in my dreamland
I wish to know the fatal flaw that makes you long to be magnificently cursed
Your opal eyes are all I wish to see
I’d live and die for moments that we stole
What would he do if he found us out?
Dare to sit and watch what we’ll become
It’s a goddamn blaze in the dark and you started it
It’s the goddamn fight of my life and you started it
COWBOY LIKE ME
Dancin’ is a dangerous game
I’m never gonna love again
I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve
Takes one to know one
Never wanted love, just a fancy car
You’re a cowboy like me
I’m telling all the rich folks anything they wanna hear
You’re a bandit like me
Never thought I’d meet you here
We could be the way forward and I know I’ll pay for it
The skeletons in both our closets plotted hard to fuck this up
The old men that I’ve swindled really did believe I was the one
Now you hang from my lips like the Gardens of Babylon
Forever is the sweetest con
LONG STORY SHORT
I tried to pick my battles 'til the battle picked me
I was in the alley, surrounded on all sides
Long story short, it was a bad time
If the shoe fits, walk in it 'til your high heels break
I clung to the nearest lips and long story short, it was the wrong guy
Now I’m all about you
Actually, I always felt I must look better in the rear view - missing me.
If someone comes at us, this time, I’m ready
No more keepin’ score, now I just keep you warm
Past me, I wanna tell you not to get lost in these petty things
Your nemeses will defeat themselves before you get the chance to swing
He feels like home
Long story short, I survived
MARJORIE
Never be so kind you forget to be clever
Never be so clever you forget to be kind
If I didn’t know better I’d think you were talking to me now
If I didn’t know better I’d think you were still around
You’re alive in my head
What died didn’t stay dead
You’re alive, so alive
Never be so polite you forget your power
Nevеr wield such power you forget to be polite
I should’ve asked you questions
Should’ve kept every grocery store receipt cause every scrap of you would be taken from me
I know better but you’re still around
I still feel you all around
CLOSURE
It’s been a long time and seeing the shape of your name still spells out pain
Yes, I’m doing better
I don’t need your closure
Yes, I got your letter
Don’t treat me like some situation that needs to be handled
I’m fine with my spite and my tears, and my beers and my candles
I know I’m just a wrinkle in your new life
Staying friends would iron it out so nice
EVERMORE
Gray November, I’ve been down since July
I replay my footsteps on each stepping stone trying to find the one where I went wrong
I couldn’t be sure
I had a feeling so peculiar that this pain would be for evermore
Guess I’m feeling unmoored
Can’t remember what I used to fight for
Can’t not think of all the cost and the things that will be lost
To be certain, we’ll be tall again
Is there a line that I could just go cross?
And when I was shipwrecked I thought of you
It was real enough to get me through
I dreamed of you
I swear you were there
I had a feeling so peculiar, this pain wouldn’t be for evermore

SAB SAID: and proper families look out for each other. that’s what they’re for. [ NO LONGER ACCEPTING. ] / @mysteryprone.
❛ yeah , well , i wouldn’t know that . i don’t have a lot of experience with proper families . ❜ he broods like he gets paid to do so, tucked away in a corner from the rest of the group. the bigger their operations get, the more turbulent noah grows inside, unsure of whether he can fully trust everyone or not. it’s a hypocritical sentiment, especially towards his ex - friends, but it’s one he can’t shake. THEY JUST DON’T KNOW HARLEY LIKE HE DOES. not even sabrina, who’s arguably the closest to understanding, who always seems to know when he needs some nagging, fully gets it. whatever brews in the deepest pit of his chest is something between him and the wraith ; and him and the wraith only.
but somehow, that’s an even lonelier existence than what he’s used to. noah doesn’t miss his mother, but he misses having someone occasionally remember to pack him a lunch. he misses having some kind of shoddy semblance of family, something he’s been so terrified of exploring beyond blood because he can’t afford to spill anymore of it. FAMILY IS OBLIGATED TO LOVE FAMILY, which shows him just how much his hated him. to defy the unspoken, natural law . . . that’s HATE. harley isn’t around anymore to wrap him in her arms when he chokes out that it should have been him, a sentiment only truer now that she’s gone, her space on this earth filled by him, an abomination of a young man who has an overwhelming amount of damage to reverse on his hands.
maybe if he wasn’t so angry, maybe if he wasn’t so scared, maybe if he wasn’t so sad, maybe if he had been held more - he’d be able to see the meaning behind sabrina’s words. that THIS, her hand begging to be held by his, is a proper family. that somewhere beyond all of this, his sister is at peace, and that that’s ENOUGH, just like he used to think it would be.
BUT IT’LL NEVER BE. NOT UNTIL HARLEY’S BACK. and maybe not even then.
❛ — look, i know you’re trying, but . . . ❜ he rubs at his eyes and half expects his hands to come back black. that’s how he feels ; a huddled mass, a perpetual shadow, a dark cloud hanging over all of them. ❛ just save your energy for the stuff that’ll actually be worth it. ❜
