No matter what they believe their influence is, I can pretty much guarantee it didn’t make a difference. Fandoms boycott episodes left and right and yet the ratings fluctuations rarely ever show any correlation, because they’re just a blip in a large fandom.  Several people saying they boycotted doesn’t matter; a huge chunk of Delena/Elena/Stelena/Nina Dobrev fans boycotted after season 6 and the ratings didn’t drop that significantly.  After they killed off Lexa, the ratings barely dipped (and even went back up soon after) even though the boycotting and outcry over her death was phenomenal.  There’s just absolutely no way that a small subset of fans who read Julie’s tweets and were pissed off caused this drop in the ratings.  

People love to come up with reasons why ratings fluctuate but in the end they’re almost always proven wrong. 

I just found out that tvd received it’s lowest ratings because the west coast boycotted the episode because of Julie Plec’s so called “disrespectful” tweets on twitter about bamon being nothing but a friendship and that delena will also be endgame. Why are people so upset about that? She literally just stated the facts that this show has been giving us. No where in this season or previous seasons have I seen anything hinting at a bamon relationship that people are saying that Julie has been doing. They have only ever been friends and everything that the bamon shippers have been saying was romantic chemistry is succch a stretch. Also, when has Damon NOT been in love with Elena in this season or even the whole show? He basically mentions her every other episode and everything major he has done was because of Elena (desiccating in a coffin, saving Bonnie in the beginning of the season because Elena would not forgive him if he didn’t, etc). Obviously delena is going to be endgame and they would never have a bamon relationship. Why would Bonnie ever date Damon? She deserves so much more than being someone to pass the time for Damon until Elena wakes up again and she got that with Enzo who treats her like a human being respecting her decisions unlike Damon (and yes I am a Damon stan but I very well know he does a LOT of shitty things and no I do not defend them). None of the anger that the bamon fandom has makes any sense. Rant over. Feel free to come yell at me in my inbox.

The ratings were not low because of them “boycotting” lol. Not even close. Ratings will alwas drop in the spring regardless, but with TVD it’s also because the show is losing steam in general (the the entire season has been on a more or less steady decline--these ratings were predictable if you look at the trend), and also there was a huge film release that drew the target audience away. 

That said, I agree with everything else. People are outraged that they deluded themselves, despite the writers AND Kat and Ian telling them BD was strictly platonic. I dunno what to tell them.
