title: The Patron Saint of Liars and Fakes

word count: total count is 15k+ (my longest posted fic), and this is part 1/2!!

warnings: lots of gambling, canon typical xenophobia and anti-immigrant sentiments, mentions of past suicide attempt (though it is not a major part of the story), canon typical transphobia and homophobia

As usual, Race was in a tight spot, and as usual, it was completely his fault. He got cocky at the races again, and lost. Now, he owed a man by the name of Timothy Dibney $2.50. Race did not have $2.50. He had 50 cents, enough to buy a hundred papers the next day; but certainly not enough to make the money he needed to get back to Timothy by the end of the week, and it was Wednesday. Race was such an idiot. He would never have placed such a high bet with so little money, but he had been hopeful, and since Albert’s birthday was coming up, he had hoped to get him something. Now it seemed that all Albert would get was Race’s corpse because he was stupid and decided to bet on the horses again. 

Race had an idea though, a truly fantastic idea that would not only get him the money he needed, but would give him the opportunity to ask Albert out. Sure, it would involve him pretending to be a girl (something he had already done for far too many years), but it would let him have one chance to hold Albert’s hand out in public, even if it was fake. Was it possibly a terrible idea? Maybe. Maybe it was wrong to trick Albert into letting him spend one night pretending he loved him back? Probably. Race didn’t care. It would get him out of this tough spot, and would let him have just one night of everything he had ever wanted. The plan, of course, was slightly convoluted. But it would work. It needed to work.

Spider-Menace Strikes Again!

On August 15th, twelve policemen answered the call to an armed robbery on the corner of 5th and Broadway. When they arrived on the scene, three suspected robbers were found caught in what appeared to be a giant spider web. Their weapons were wrapped in the same substance and rendered useless.

It goes without saying that the presumed obstructor of justice (who resolutely continues to hinder good police work) is none other than the Spider-Man.

Who is this so-called Spider-Man? How does he always know exactly where to find criminals? Why is there a sudden uptick in un-policed supers plaguing our boroughs? These are the questions we, as a city, should be asking ourselves. According to the letter of the law, vigilantism is illegal. Spider-Man does not answer to New York’s finest, and he does not answer to the public. He answers only to himself. He is judge and jury for every alleged crime he intervenes in. 

This masked menace must be kept accountable for his actions. He leaves a wake of destruction in his path on his search for vengeance, leaving the rest of New York to clean it up in the form of taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars. Sanitation is still cleaning up the mess he left in Central Park last week.

If our community allows him to go unchecked for so long, it’s only a matter of time before his reckless quest for terrorism gets an innocent person ki—

The hiss from the thin sheets of paper being snatched from his hands cause Davey to jolt in surprise. Swapping the surprise on his face for a disgruntled frown, he swats his arm at the air beside his ear an attempt to reclaim his stolen newspaper. “Hey, I was reading that!”

He watches helplessly as his copy of The World is crumpled up into a sphere and casually dumped into the nearest trash can. He rounds on the culprit, brow furrowed and prepared to give them a piece of his mind until he’s greeted with an all too familiar frown. 

Jack Kelly stands in front of him, arms crossed over his chest and glaring expectantly at Davey.

HI Y'ALL IT'S HERE! MY BANG FIC IS UP! I'm super excited for y'all to read this short-story based on Christopher Nolan's film Memento. That film was my first introduction to Chris Nolan, who is my all time favorite director and the reason I started acting. I've always wanted to write something in his style--non linear which is what you're about to read. It's very confusing and it was intentional to be confusing, especially if you have not watched the film, which you do not need to in order to understand this short-story. But it is recommended. My lovely artist is @lithuanianking so go check out their amazing artwork for this story when it gets posted! Y'all are going to be so confused and I am so ready for the comments. Based on Christopher Nolan's 2000 film "Memento", Jack Kelly is a private insurance investigator suffering a rare amnesia condition known as anterograde amnesia. In denial about his past, Kelly has also removed files from the police to fool himself and Sammy Jenkins. After the murder of the real Sean C., Kelly shows up to a local cafe restaurant where he meets up with Katherine. Knowing Kelly’s associated with Sean’s disappearance, Katherine uses him to protect her from Sean’s associates like Oscar Delancy or maybe she sics Deleancy on Kelly. Spot tries to help Kelly deal with Oscar after Oscar tries to kill Kelly. Spot’s trying to get away from Katherine because he knows who she is, and she knows his undercover name. But Katherine’s lies convinces Kelly she’ll help him, which she does by running the liscense plate number that Kelly gave her. She also gives Kelly a place to kill him. When Spot meets up with Kelly again, Kelly takes him to the place Katherine gave him, which happens to be an abandoned motel. Kelly kills Spot because he believes Spot is the one who raped and murdered his husband, David Jacobs. He takes a picture of Conlon’s dead body and looks at it.

Summary: Buttons and Elmer were opposites in every way. Except, they were really the same. Everything about it was so cliche that even they started to joke about how their lives seemed to be some kind of poorly written teen romance novel. Of course, they always made sure to note the whole "minus the romance" thing. They really just live up to the cliche, huh?
