Replaying bg3 on a resist Durge run and there's an interesting thing i just noticed in the coronation scene. There's an option, when Gortash suggests renewing your partnership, to ask "What kind of partnership are you suggesting?"

and he pauses, and gets this odd look

looks away, and you can tell wheels are turning in his head in that second it takes him to respond, as if he didn't expect you to question it, as if he expected you would already know what he means.

almost.... disappointed. A little in disbelief.

"oh. they really DO NOT remember anything."

and I think that's an awesome little easy-to-miss moment

Gortash headcanons:

Gort corresponded with Zariel regarding the development of Karlach's infernal engine and is his supplier of Infernal Iron that goes back to his arms-dealing days.

Hates riddles and long-winded monologues, preferring to be a straight shooter (unlike his former "guardian" who loves to obfuscate with theatrics). A "says it like it is" politician (which means he's openly cruel instead of subtextually cruel).

Has property in the Upper City he barely uses, preferring to stay in his office (busy with work) or Flymm's Cobblers (something something damaged inner child).

Deliberately cultivates a less "polished" aesthetic to sell himself as a "man of the people."

Judging by how much he took cues from Sarevok (arms-dealing, distributing "weird" iron, Iron Throne, infiltrating the Council of Four, etc), he probably knows more about the Bhaalspawn crisis than Durge/Orin whose information on it is probably warped and limited.

Bombs in teddy bears was a prototype to the Steel Watchers' self-detonation devices.

Designed the Steel Watch as a deliberate counter to how Bhaalists fight (detects Invisibility, can't be surprised, crossbow that pins down an agile target, immune to poison and fear).

Does anybody also think that Gortash was kinda deflective when asked about why he didn’t search for Durge? His supposed “nearest and dearest”.

I personally think that while what he said is true, about not being able to intervene in the affairs of other chosen, he’s using it as a shield to hide his guilt.

Also, I’m of the camp that thinks Orin subsumed Durge’s identity for a bit after their assassination as to better integrate herself as the chosen of Bhaal. Also, because she probs likes to play mind games with others, to see if they can catch her in the act.

Regardless, because of Orin disguising herself as Durge, Gortash didn’t go searching for them because he couldn’t. He couldn’t pinpoint the exact date of their death, nor the last place the real Durge visited. And he’s ashamed by that fact, so he hides it beneath their oath.

But I’m certain, if Gortash knew earlier, he would’ve definitely looked for them.

Masquerade party is one of my fav scenarios when I daydream about them. Especially when I think how Durge accepted this invitation(I have a headcanon about it).

I LOVE the Durgestarion ship, it’s my favorite thematically and their exclusive dialogue lines are amazing, but I have to admit that as a Durgetash shipper as well, Durge turning up to Baldur’s Gate with a romanced Gale is on all levels of tragicomedy.

Here is Gortash having to watch his amnesiac beloved miraculously returned from the dead, now in love with a dark-haired human who is a renown genius, a former Chosen, and extremely ambition-driven. Does that sound at all familiar?

I bet Gortash has a good long cry in his office after his coronation, followed by an extreme fit of rage that leaves a few casualties, followed by another days-long cry.

And to further add insult to injury, Gale can take the crown, become a god in his own right and make Durge ascend to godhood alongside him. I don’t think any punishment that Bane inflicts on Gortash can be worse than that.

DUrge Thoughts

Okay look, it's not that either one of them are lying or even wrong, it's just that they have very different baselines for what is proper.

Gortash is monstrous but he's not actually a monster - he's human and he is at least savvy enough to have gotten quite far up the social ladder (even if there is a question of whether he ever quite fits in).

He actually has some idea of what normal behavior looks like, even if that's all he knows about it.

But Sceleritas Fel is speaking from the point of view of a fiend of Bhaal, not necessarily concerned with appearing socially acceptable.

I think both are true from their respective points of view.

But the reason I bring it up is because of how I imagine my durge to struggle not with being a person but with being a bhaalspawn! They are said to have had a relatively normal early childhood, so they had a foundation of that before they were "urge" forced to kill their family.

"You have always struggled to conduct yourself properly" - properly in what context? As Bhaal's chosen - that's what I think.

Durge struggles to suppress that part of themself that was not wholly Bhaal's creation, to do exactly and only what their father wanted. Even when chiding Orin, they still admire her arts and magics. There is still a 'person' buried in there.

They had dreams once, desires, wants. Anything that was not exactly what Bhaal wanted was crushed, but could not be utterly destroyed. Thus Sceleritas Fel needing to their guide in their father's desires.

Gortash is likely to have a more (shall we say) realistic view of Durge being far more in control of themselves. Not without bias, of course, but at least from an outside perspective.

So Gortash is saying that for all Durge is a bhaalspawn, they can at least control themselves (perhaps even too much?) and perhaps why Bhaal sent Sceleritas to them in the first place. They kept slipping too far into being a person and needed their leash tightened.
