         after spending months in the commonwealth where the mere word ‘synth’ was likely to spark violence, it felt like a sudden relief as he’d set foot in the harbor - where even the grumpiest of inhabitants didn’t seem to care much that their neighbors were openly synths. he wasn’t one, himself, of course - but he was close enough that it often riled suspicion - or at worst, hostility - in most settlements: something he’d discovered extremely quickly. which explained his appearance at the moment. 

         as someone approached him, he started to remove his scarf, hat and tinted goggles - luminous eyes instantly standing out in the muted light of the room. regardless, he grinned at the man, eagerly shaking his hand as it was offered. “ hi there, faraday! my name is yes man, it’s a pleasure to meet you! ” he glanced around at the building; an old observatory, it looked like. with...a lot of data stored here, judging by the many servers.

        his boisterous introduction soon gave way to an uncomfortable silence, a change in his demeanor as reality set in. “ i’m - i feel just a little silly, now. i spent all this time trying to get here, now i don’t really know what to say! " he gave an uneasy laugh and withdrew his hands to fidget with the edge of his sleeves anxiously; his smile didn’t waver, but he still managed to look somewhat sheepish. “ umm... i’m an AI program! i’m not really a synth...so i understand if you’d want me to leave- just say the word! synths sure do need a place to themselves after being in the commonwealth! ” the institute wasn’t some faction vying for power or control, they already had it. it was a common enemy - one that was getting dangerously close to him. he couldn’t imagine what it was like for someone made there.

          “ it’s...really difficult out there for you all, huh? ”

  The new person in Acadia’s walls was not like anyone Faraday had met before, which in honesty was not alot. Still, this newcomer with his layers upon layers of clothes and disposition not seen before on The Harbor had the synth curious. So exiting his lab, he patted down his shirt and white coat to try making himself more presentable.

i love Fallout: New Vegas (2010) because it’s full of nuanced ethical dilemmas. For example, at the end of the game’s first act, you must choose between slaughtering Chandler From Friends and his entire tribe or making clumsy sex puns until he lets you do foot stuff with him in his shitty apartment

FALLOUT 4 AU BASICS

yes man followed the courier into the northeast; the reasoning behind their departure from new vegas may change due to interaction, but the default is that after handing over control to the NCR, the courier took to travelling northeast - bringing yes man with in her pipboy. 

eventually, by following house’s old records of MIT, stories of the institute as well as the mechanist, they decided to try and seek out a body for yes man. though not identical to a synth, his new body could be likened to a prototype between a gen 2 synth and a gen 3 synth; outwardly very human, but still having certain mechanical traits which become immediately visible when injured. he’s still getting used to this body, but also managed to recover a prototype securitron from an old robco showroom and is working on making it active as another body.

at some point in time, the institute learned of yes man and took an interest in his unusual AI make-up and attempted to capture him. the courser attack was narrowly fended off, but succeeded in separating him from the courier. now, he is travelling the commonwealth searching for her - as well as trying to dodge the institute’s attention. 

overall, he’s lost and desperate for any sign of which direction to take, but finds himself starting to form actual opinions about the events and factions around him - and taking courses of action that are not immediately related to the courier or strategic purposes, but things he merely wants to do. he’s also learning the necessity to develop a crucial, new skill that still proves immensely difficult for him; lying or omitting information. it’s extremely hard even though he no longer has to listen to every order - but it’s necessary for his survival in the commonwealth.

ACTIONS: 

rebuilding a securitron body, running his little shop in the atom cats garage, starting his own radio station, collecting various knickknacks and oddities, helping other robots ( particularly in graygarden & the general atomics galleria ), hanging out in general in goodneighbor, searching for the courier, trying to make contact with acadia

HOME BASES:

the atom cats garage - yes man has quickly been accepted by the atom cats due to his quick-to-help nature. he runs a small repair shop for all things programming/robotic/computers in the back of the garage. here’s an info post with his living space for the atom cats.

goodneighbor - it reminds yes man of new vegas the most, and despite how rough it can be, it feels the most like home. yes man managed to buy a small apartment behind the rexford. sometimes, even an AI needs a place to be alone for a while and get his bearings. he also enjoys decorating this place a great deal. here’s an info post about his goodneighbor apartment. he helps out kent connolly occasionally with running the silver shroud radio station. he may also be found hanging out with KL-E-O, or in the third rail.

secret bunker - less of a bunker and more of a storage area that doubled as a bomb shelter, yes man repurposed an old spa & hot springs south of diamond city into a base of sorts. he does not spend much time here unless he is working on something potentially dangerous. only people he absolutely trusts will be granted access. here’s an info post about this area.

FACTIONS;

ATOM CATS - as stated before, yes man hangs out with the atom cats and has been accepted by them after offering to help out. they are aware of his “synth” nature but do not treat him any differently, stating that he is an atom cat first and foremost. he enjoys spending time with the group immensely, even if he isn’t sure quite what to do at times - like ‘poetry night’.

MINUTEMEN - yes man approves of them, but hasn’t had any reason to outright assist them or otherwise interfere with their activities in the commonwealth. most of his interactions with the minutemen are for trading purposes or laying low in heavily populated minutemen-controlled settlements to blend in. if convinced, he would likely be a great and capable ally as he still retains his immense processing power and the ability to inhabit more than one platform at once.

RAILROAD - yes man is easily as much of a danger to the railroad as he is an ally, and he knows it - even though he doesn’t mean to endanger them at all. he already has much of the institute’s attention and doesn’t want to bring their wrath down on an organization dedicated to helping synths, but would still be receptive to covertly working with them.

BROTHERHOOD OF STEEL - yes man has never cared for the brotherhood of steel and he’s more than aware that he would be seen either as dangerous technology to be destroyed, or to be utilized by the brotherhood. it’s for this reason that he keeps his distance and has very little dealings with them.

THE INSTITUTE - easily the most disliked of commonwealth factions, yes man aims to keep out of their sight as much as possible - which is difficult to do when you’re someone as noticeable as he is. he knows that his AI program is of interest, and knows that they are more than likely to develop a way to capture him soon, but is often able to narrowly escape them.

ACADIA - at some point in time, yes man may establish communication with the synth colony in acadia and travel there to speak with them. while he doesn’t stay permanently, he feels slightly at ease among others even remotely like him.

MISC. NOTES

yes man is not a gen3 synth and is visibly inhuman upon close inspection - and he’s aware of that. when in highly populated areas where this would arouse suspicion ( diamond city ), he is likely wearing several layers of clothes which would cover up his more mechanical traits. 

he doesn’t have to listen to orders given anymore, but usually still will try to please people out of habit or compliment them excessively. this has mixed results since he now has a humanoid body that can make it much easier to tell when he’s lying or stating something he doesn’t really believe.

he will also go by ‘jess’ or ‘manny’ in these places as opposed to his real name.

he enjoys explosives and rapid-fire weapons the most.

yes man may become a companion for the sole survivor. his max affinity quest would involve the sole survivor being told about the courier and finding her.

        yes man fell quiet upon hearing that. he didn’t know much about the synth - other than the fact that he was a detective and, well, the fact that he was a synth. an anomaly in diamond city, apparently - and he could understand why. he may not have had much experience with other synths, but he had plenty of experience with humans - and nick seemed remarkably human. and it didn’t take a supercomputer for him to assume that he’d been through a lot. that seemed to be everyone’s story out here in the real world, rather than the sheltered life of existing in virtual spaces.

         “ i-i’m sorry. ” his voice shook and wavered like an ancient holotape recording, unsure of how to replicate the sound of being somber - but still genuine. he fiddled with his hands, suddenly hyperaware of the fact that he no longer had metallic claws. that he wasn’t in the right body anymore, and that body was over two-thousand miles away. possibly, it no longer existed. everything he’d ever been or been created for...may no longer stand. “ i’ve had - i’ve had a lot taken from me, too. ” the courier had been taken from him, and he was going to find her. he had to keep telling himself that, at least - or else unfamiliar, new emotions set in that he didn’t know how to process.

         “ but - i’ve found a lot of new things, too! it doesn’t replace what’s gone - but it...it sure helps fill in the spaces! sometimes...if that makes sense? ” he gave a nervous laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. he wasn’t sure how to express what he felt - the bittersweet feeling of discovering new wonders, new friends while still aching for the old and familiar. “ i’m sorry, that must sound pretty silly to you! ”
