Actor and comedian Steve Coogan has said taking on the role of Jimmy Savile was not a decision he “took lightly” because “it’s fraught with pitfalls”.

The 56-year-old Alan Partridge star portrays the disgraced entertainer in a new BBC One drama called The Reckoning.

Jamie Wallis has become the first MP to come out as trans, revealing he was diagnosed with gender dysphoria from a young age but wanted to show “how important it is to be yourself”.

In a statement posted hours after Boris Johnson reportedly joked about people who are transgender, the Bridgend MP said he had “never lived my truth” but would try to start by “telling everyone” about his identity.

Wallis said he had been raped last year, and that he had been blackmailed not long after being elected to the House of Commons.

British Gas, E.ON and Scottish Power down: Energy websites crash as people rush to submit meter readings

EDF, British Gas, Eon, Scottish Power and Shell Energy websites are all down this morning, at a time when millions are looking to input their meter readings.

Today is the final day for consumers to hand their meter readings over to suppliers before the new price cap comes into effect tomorrow.

Ofgem’s cap will rise to £1,971 – up from £1,277 – leaving many taking readings to ensure they are not charged over the odds.

After the price changes go into effect on 1 April, any usage before that date that isn’t logged with energy companies may be charged at the new rate.

Actor Bruce Willis has drawn attention to a brain disorder that leads to problems with speaking, reading and writing, after he announced he was retiring due to an aphasia diagnosis.

The little-known condition can be caused by a stroke, tumour, head injury or other damage to the language centres of the brain. It can also be triggered by a brain infection or Alzheimer’s disease.

In America, the National Aphasia Association estimates 2 million people are affected and nearly 180,000 get the disorder every year.

Prince Philip memorial: Queen joins royals as Duke of Edinburgh remembered at London service

Ahead of the service, a crowd congregated beside barriers near the entrance to the abbey in an attempt to catch a glimpse of royal family members making their way inside.

The Service of Thanksgiving was held at Westminster Abbey and saw a 1,800-strong congregation gather to honour Prince Philip’s life.

Biden warns Russia Nato will respond if Kremlin uses chemical weapons

Joe Biden raised the stakes with Russia over its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine by warning that Nato would be forced to respond if the Kremlin resorted to using chemical weapons.
