Art Deco has always been a part of my life with my Mum being an Antique collector so I've always been surrounded by pieces of Art Deco or Art Nouveau or Wedgwood etc. I wanted to find and original Art Deco piece for this assignment, as It is a style that contains a simple elegance with in taking influence from the engineering feats of the time.
(Art Deco Trust, 2013) states that “Art Deco originated in Europe in the early 20th Century, and its heyday was from 1920 to 1940. Art Deco expressed all the vigor and optimism of the roaring twenties, and the idealism and escapism of the grim thirties.”
On Trademe I found this piece “ART DECO LAMPSHADE & BEZEL $1 res” that I wish to talk about. It wasn't hard to find a genuine Art Deco piece on Trademe as New Zealand especially Napier is prominent for its love of Art Deco.
This item appears the be an original piece due to the appearance of the brass and the detailing featured on the lampshade. The typical straight lines teamed with the curved ornament detail on the bottom of the piece is commonly associated with Art Deco, along with the vertical lines likened to detailing seen on sky scrapers symbolic of early 20thcentury engineering. The piece appears to be in excellent condition with no visible cracks or fading. The seller doesn't describe the piece very much, only briefly describing the piece. I like this piece as it shows a simple elegance, it does its function without being flashy but not being plain.

DSDN 111 Project 2 Summary
My model is very simple in it’s composition, the forward sweeping angle of the wire combined with the flow of the skins suggests a strong forward movement which acts as my main compositional strategy.
The skin which feature simplistic flowing curves which are repeated in the three skins which increase in scale and opacity of the material. This is achieved by using a different material for each of the skins.
The wire frame provides an abstract representation of the curves seen in the skins by using a series of staggered vertical lines that increase in length and with the use of offsetting each vertical line adds depth to the piece.

101 Assignment 2 brief
101 Assignment 2 Brief I don't know much about my culture/ heritage/ ancestry apart from the fact I'm part Jewish and Spanish as well as being NZ European. I know the most prominent images associated with Judaism, and Jews is the Star of David and the Menorah commonly used in the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. So I'll be looking at incorporating the Star of David prominently as a key element in my pattern and my animation.
I'll look at drawing other inspiration from my love of technology, e.g. electronics, circuitry, engines etc. So for my pattern and animation I will look at merging the two, the traditional imagery of the Star of David and circuitry as I think circuit diagrams will accentuate the angles of the Star of David.

Here's my animation, kinda crap. Flash sucks, wish we could have used a useful software like After effects, given the oppurtunity to use masks to add flowing elements would have resulted in nicer final
