It’s amusing to see this with both of my parents around.
Back in 2014 my parents both traded in their flip-phones for Samsung Galaxy S3s (they were free, whereas the S4 would have cost... whatever). In any case, flip-phone to modern Android device.
My dad uses it for a week before returning it and getting his old phone back.
My mom struggles, but keeps at it. A few years later she trades up for a brand new Galaxy S6, and this year she made the switch to chatting with me on WhatsApp and (apparently!) even follows me on Twitter.
My mom is over 65 years old.
Anyway. Shout out to Baby Boomers who embrace change and continue to allow themselves to be made uncomfortable so they can learn new things.

I hate that some people are so dense that they need disclaimers for every single thing, like when women say “men are…” you know good and goddamn well they aren’t referring to every single man. It’s billions of us, how the fuck would they know all of us?
Whenever I hear these statements, I interpret it as “Not all men, but enough men to make this a prominent issue amongst men”
Same shit with “white people are…” Get the fuck out your feelings and actually listen so you can address the concerns of these people instead of defending people that ain’t shit.

A video from Nyle DiMarco illustrating the difference between hearing actors playing Deaf characters and his actual fluent ASL (subtitled). 
One thing that I noticed was that many of the movie clips had the actors poorly lit, so you couldn’t see their signing very well, especially their faces. Non-manual markers are also a really important part of ASL grammar!

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Quite a bold statement from the Declaration of Independence, but absolutely in line with the thinking of the Age of Enlightenment.
The one tiny thing wrong is that this “all men” wasn’t being used for “all humankind”, and even black men didn’t count.
This is why we need to say, to yell out, “Black Lives Matter!”

Oh gosh, thank you. I went into this like, “I know I have trichromatic vision, let me count” and I also got 33 or 34 colors. (I just sort of rolled my eyes and figured it was typical FB BS, but it’s nice to know it actually is completely wrong.)
That nonsense post about tetrachromatism is going around again. Here’s a link to a “why that post is nonsense” essay someone posted two years ago as my tiny, futile effort to stop it!

I totally don’t want to say this is wrong, but I do want to bring up a couple of reasons why people/groups want to keep some set of their knowledge as secret. I’ll use alchemy in my examples because it’s sort of what I know best?
One reason could be that it’s dangerous. In alchemy, The Great Work involves a number of steps that create highly toxic substances. It’s just not a good idea to jump right into this without building up procedures for keeping yourself safe.
Another reason is personal discovery. In alchemy, a transmutation must take place physically, mentally, and spiritually to be successful. Being told how to do something is only one part, and so it can be more helpful to provide guidance rather than answers sometimes, so that it better takes root in them.
And, lastly, because sometimes people can ruin things. As I noted above, transmutation takes place on three levels, and all transmutation is about changing something to a higher state. (In The Great Work where one transmutes a base metal, such as lead, into gold.) If one shares the work one is doing with someone who, for whatever reason, has a negative view about it, that can poison one’s mental focus and ruin the work.
So those are some reasons that I would keep quiet about things I know or work I was up to. I’ll invite @they-better-be-mysterious to comment because they’re much more knowledgeable than I, and they might have some interesting insight!
But yes! Share and teach! The world needs more witches and mages and alchemists and and and...
Destroy the idea that knowledge of witchcraft and magick has to be a secret.
Spread that knowledge, tell your friends, swap research materials, let everyone in who wants in.

I really, really want to plug The Night’s Dawn trilogy by Peter F Hamilton. It is a super long read (something like 3,000 pages) or an equally long listen (nearly 3x 40 hours)
The reason I bring it up is that he’s come up with the most amazing technology, and I feel that it can be used as a great example of doing hard sci-fi, following the guidelines here.
